A v a n t - p r o p o s 13

Writing jazz? Printing a book? A double paradox if one

thinks improvisation on one side and multimedia on the

other. And yet!

We were the first ones to be surprised by the success

met by the idea – thrown around for the first time in the

Spring of 1994 – to produce a “Fake Book of Jazz in France”.

The result: close to 700 compositions received, dozens of

musicians who worked for hours to select the pieces

presented here. Without mentioning the many journa-

lists, publishers, photographers, writers, lawyers, institu-

tions and other figures of musical life who collaborated

on this project and followed us without hesitation during

these three years of preparation.

We have been driven by passion, certain of doing some-

thing useful and, most of all, deeply convinced that we

have been defending an always rich an vital music, which

has been part of our history since the beginning of the

century.

We know this book is far from perfect and all-inclusive.

Yet publishing it is, for us, the best way of expressing

ourselves.

May these compositions arouse your curiosity and prompt

you to listen to and to practise an art form which has

shaped most of our lives.

Écrire le jazz ? Imprimer un livre ? Double paradoxe si l’on penseimprovisation d’un côté, multimédia de l’autre. Et pourtant !

Nous avons été les premiers surpris du succès rencontré par l’idée

lancée au printemps 1994 : réaliser un « Livre du Jazz en France ».Résultat : près de 700 compositions reçues, plusieurs dizaines de musi-ciens venus de tous horizons mobilisés sur des centaines d’heures detravail pour sélectionner les œuvres qui figurent ici. Sans compter lesnombreux journalistes, éditeurs, photographes, écrivains, juristes, ins-titutions, et autres acteurs de la vie musicale que nous avons mis àcontribution sur ce projet et qui nous ont suivi sans hésiter tout aulong de ces trois ans de gestation.

La passion, la certitude de faire œuvre utile nous auront porté, maissurtout la conviction profonde de défendre la richesse d’une musique

inscrite dans notre histoire depuis le début du siècle et dont la vitali-té ne s’est jamais démentie. Nous savons cet ouvrage incomplet, et,sans doute n’est-il pas exempt de défauts, mais nous ne saurionsaujourd’hui mieux nous exprimer qu’en publiant cet ensemble designes. Puissent-ils attiser votre curiosité et vous conduire à l’écouteet à la pratique d’un art qui a conditionné l’essentiel de nos existences.

D’abord et avant tout, il y a le plaisir et le bon-heur d’ouvrir Le Livre du Jazz en France auhasard et de se confronter à une partition. Et depage en page, on est frappé par l’extraordinairediversité d’écriture, par l’invention mélodique, parla richesse des propositions thématiques pourl’improvisation.
