S. Naval Warfare College professor, Thomas Barnett, “a global rule set of democracy, transparency, and free trade” connecting “countries together in mutually assured dependence” is emerging. Countries following the global rules are stable. He calls them “Core.” Countries not participating in globalization, called the “Gap,” are plagued with repression, poverty, disease, and conflict. Since the collapse of Soviet Communism, nearly all U. S. military actions have been in response to threats either in or exported from the Gap (see map on page 2). Besides blunting and blocking the Gap’s drug and terrorist exports, Barnett says that shrinking the Gap with exported security and integrating it into the Core will be a global-security task to rival the Cold War. He proclaims, “Until we begin the systematic, long-term export of security to the Gap, it will increasingly export its pain to the Core in the form of terrorism and other instabilities.” Integrating Gap countries into globalization, however, entails more than exporting security and economic interdependence. Winning the Cold War took superior values, character, and ideology as much as military buildup and economic strength. In diagnosing the Gap, Barnett blames its disconnectedness on the lack of personal freedom due to insecurity and fear. In prescribing globalization, Barnett advocates military intervention, free trade, foreign investment, human liberty, and economic interdependence. A product of his materialistic Harvard education, Barnett avoids discussing spirituality. However, the source of the present conflict, and hence its long-term solution, is not merely economic and material. It is religious. The belief system that globalizes interdependent Core countries is Secularism. Historian Bernard Lewis notes the term “secularism” was first used in the nineteenth century for “the doctrine that morality should be based on rational considerations regarding human well-being in this world, to the exclusion of considerations relating to God and the after-life.” As a governing ideology, Secularism ended Europe’s bloody religious wars. It permits a plurality of religious convictions in a civil society by rendering them irrelevant to civic life. It is also compatible with the history of Christianity, which grew for three hundred years without political influence and with the teachings of Christ who said, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s” (Matthew 22:21). Secularism, however, is not compatible with Islam. Although it organizes no system of belief in God, Secularism proclaims about God that his supernatural revelations are irrelevant to legislating civic morality. This contradicts the Muslim notion that the state should manifest and implement Islam. According to U. S. Naval WarfareCollege professor, Thomas Barnett,

“a global rule set of democracy,transparency, and free trade”connecting “countries together inmutually assured dependence” isemerging.

Countries following the global rulesare stable. He calls them “Core.”Countries not participating inglobalization, called the “Gap,” areplagued with repression, poverty,disease, and conflict.

Since the collapse of SovietCommunism, nearly all U. S. militaryactions have been in response to threatseither in or exported from the Gap (seemap on page 2).

Besides blunting and blocking theGap’s drug and terrorist exports, Barnettsays that shrinking the Gap withexported security and integrating it intothe Core will be a global-security task torival the Cold War. He proclaims, “Untilwe begin the systematic, long-termexport of security to the Gap, it willincreasingly export its pain to the Core inthe form of terrorism and otherinstabilities.”

Integrating Gap countries intoglobalization, however, entails more thanexporting security and economic

interdependence. Winning the Cold Wartook superior values, character, andideology as much as military buildupand economic strength.

Under Secularism, people make lawsand nations demand compliance andallegiance. Citizens may freely chooseand express beliefs, but they will bepunished for breaking laws orcommitting treason.

Under Islam, citizens commit treasonby leaving or blaspheming Islam, andcivil laws come from Allah. Cooperatingwith the secular rules to participate inglobalization compromises Islam bysubjugating the Qur’an to internationalhuman conventions. FundamentalistMuslims in Gap countries are not just

trying to return to some seventh centurygolden age, they are fighting forrelevance of religion in a world where itmatters no longer.

Consider, for example, theimplications of demanding airplanebombers be tried in a secular “worldcourt” or demanding that Iraq submit toUnited Nations weapons inspections.For hundreds of years, Muslims dictatedthe rules for international trade,boundaries, and relations, but today,secular law and governing bodies trumpMuslim ones.

A nation’s well-being depends onsocial conditions that are driven more byspiritual values than by securityarrangements and physical resources.The insecurity and fear that constrainpersonal freedoms which could lead toglobal connectivity of Gap countriescome from entrenched belief systems.Shrinking the Gap will be impossiblewithout religious changes. Beforepopulations in Muslim Gap countries canbe globalized with security andeconomic arrangements, they must besecularized.

All Yemen Mourns Slain MissionariesFamily and Friends Forgive Islamist Assassin

The families and colleagues ofmissionaries murdered at the Jibla

Baptist Hospital in Yemen have sentword to the assassin that they forgivehim for what he did.

While declaring their grief over thetragic deaths, close friends on thehospital staff conveyed their message offorgiveness through an attorney to AbedAbdul Razak Kamel, the self-confessedkiller, Baptist Press reported.

Dr. Martha Myers, hospitaladministrator William Koehn, andpurchasing agent Kathleen Gariety wereshot and killed by Kamel on themorning of December 30th on thehospital compound.

As quoted in the Yemeni newspaper,the captured assassin told hisgovernment interrogators, “Go aheadand kill me, since I am going to go toheaven anyway.” Kamel indicated thatby murdering missionaries whom heaccused of converting “dozens ofMuslims” to Christianity, he had insuredhis entrance into heaven.

The emphasis on forgiveness waswoven through the funeral service thefollowing day on the hospitalcompound, as well as in later memorialservices in Sanaa and the United States.

On December 31st, hundreds ofYemenis from Jibla and the surroundingarea gathered at the hospital to pay theirrespects, while others lined the road fora half-mile outside the hospital gates.Both Myers and Koehn were buried inthe cemetery of the 80-bed hospitalcompound where they had labored for

25 years or more. Gariety’s body wassent home to Wisconsin for burial.

“We feel as if we were allassassinated today,” local Red Crescentofficial Ahmed al-Sabahi told Reutersafter the murders. “All Jibla weeps forthem,” local resident Malka al-Hadhramitold the Associated Press at the funeral,choking back her tears.

Yemeni hospital staff and friendsbuilt the caskets for Koehn and Dr.Myers with their own hands, then dugthe graves and lowered the bodies intothe ground.

Within 48 hours of the shooting,most of the Southern Baptist staff ofJibla Hospital traveled north to thecapital, Sanaa, “to rest, heal andregroup,” Baptist Press reported. Mosthave indicated they plan to remain in thecountry, including Koehn’s wife Marty,who said she wanted to stay “toencourage the Yemeni people grievingthe loss of my husband.”

Just before a memorial service atSanaa’s International School auditoriumon January 1st, Dr. Judy Williams of theJibla staff met with the internationalpress.

“These individuals deeply loved andcared for the people of Yemen,” Williamssaid in a prepared statement, asreported by the Baptist Press. “Theyfreely chose to give their lives to servethe people of this country. Andalthough their lives on earth have ended,nothing was taken from them that theyhadn’t already freely given.

“My friends [at the hospital] want youto know that they don’t hold anythingagainst the assailant,” Williamscontinued. “They want him to know that

they forgive him, and they want him toknow God’s forgiveness.”

At Gariety’s memorial service atLayton Avenue Baptist Church inMilwaukee, Wisconsin, Pastor KeithChase urged everyone who grieved thedeaths of the three workers to pray fortheir killer. “We are called to love ourenemies,” Chase said. “It would tarnishthe life and ministry of these people toallow hatred to win.”

The wounded colleague whosurvived the attack is reported to berecovering.

Donald Caswell, 49, was transferredto the capital, Sanaa, the day after theattack, following successful surgery toremove two bullets in his abdomen. Apharmacist from Levelland, Texas,Caswell and his family have worked atthe hospital for more than a year.

Yemeni authorities have arrested atleast 30 suspects in connection with theJibla murders, a security spokesmantold the Agence France Press onJanuary 1st. All known Islamist militants,the men in custody are mostly “mosquepreachers from various parts of Yemen,”the Yemen Times reported in its January6th issue.

Kamel has reportedly also admittedto knowing several suspected al-Qaedamembers, including the suicide bomberwho attacked the USS Cole in October2000. On January 5th, Yemeni securityofficials said they had found audiotapesof al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden ina search of Kamel’s home. In remarkspublished the same day, YemeniParliament speaker Abdullah al-Ahmarsaid he believed the missionaryshootings were in revenge for theNovember killing of al-Qaeda’s topoperative in Yemen by an unmannedCIA missile.

Kamel has claimed that he plottedhis attack with Ali al-Jarallah, whoassassinated Yemeni oppositionpolitician Jarallah Omar two days beforethe Jibla attack. According tointerrogators, the two had at least sixother targets on their hit list, includingother foreigners, journalists and secularpoliticians.

Jordanian Widow Fights Muslim Court

In an embarrassing case ofinternational proportions, Jordan’s

Supreme Court has ruled that aChristian widow must surrender her twochildren to a Muslim guardian who willraise them in the Muslim faith.

Siham Qandah, the widow, is theyoungest of ten children. She has twosisters living in Canada and a brotherwho is pastoring a church in Illinois. This brother has offered full support, butQandah’s 13-year-old son, Fadi, and 15-year-old daughter, Rawan, have beenforbidden to leave Jordan.

One of Qandah’s brothers whoconverted to Islam as a teenager is aleader in a Jordanian mosque. In 1998,he filed a civil suit demanding custody ofhis niece and nephew in order to raisethem as Muslims, claiming Qandah’shusband converted to Islam before hedied, so that under Jordanian law thechildren must be raised in Islam.

Qandah’s husband died in 1994while on military duty in Kosovo. When

Qandah went to claim her benefits,authorities said she was ineligible as aChristian, because her husbandconverted to Islam while in Kosovo.They produced a conversion certificatedated in 1991 that was written andsigned by two Muslim witnesses, butwhich bore only an “X” for the signatureof her late husband.

To draw benefits for her children,Qandah had to name a Muslim as their

legal guardian. She named the brotherwho now demands custody.

Qandah doubts the conversiondocument is genuine. Her husbandattended their son’s baptism between1991 and 1994. His burial was Christian.His death certificate is Christian.

According to Jordanian law, thecertificate of conversion may not becontested by a Christian woman, since it has already been certified by anIslamic court.

International media coverage andappeals from abroad to the Jordanianroyal family have prevented the courtorder from being enforced, but onJanuary 16th the Irbid Court of FirstInstance issued a warrant for Qandah’sarrest.

Qandah and her children arepresently hiding. Prince Hassan, brotherof the late King Hussein, and JordanianKing Abdullah II are reportedlyconcerned but unwilling to intervene onthe young widow’s behalf.

Dayna Curry Details God’s Work in Afghanistan

Dayna Curry and Heather Mercer,who were imprisoned in Afghanistan

prior to 9-11 for telling Muslims aboutJesus, have been using their popularityto tell others of their love for Afghansand God’s work in that land.

In her presentations, Dayna toldlisteners of four factors that she hasseen having an impact in Afghanistan.

Radio ProgramsDayna told about meeting an Afghan

woman who heard a Christian radiobroadcast when she was sweeping herhome. The woman told Dayna that thename of Jesus “was the sweetest soundshe had heard.” Since the Taliban atthat time was forbidding her to tellpeople about Jesus, Dayna startedbuying radios for people.

The JESUS Film Dayna related the story of a very

poor man who came up to her and said,“What this film says is more importantthan all the money in the world.” Shesays that the film is especially powerfulamong the poor people, many of whomhave never seen a film before.

PrayerDayna noted that the numbers of

sick and ailing in Afghanistan have beenso high that it has been impossible formost to get any kind of professionalmedical care. Her treatment of choicewas prayer. One day a worried motherapproached her and Heather about oneof her children who had a very highfever. The woman agreed to let Daynaand Heather pray in the name of Jesusfor the boy to be healed, and he was.The woman returned the next daywanting to know “who Jesus was.”

DreamsDayna affirmed that many Muslims

in Afghanistan have been having lifechanging dreams. The woman whoseson’s fever was healed was stressed outmeeting the needs of her eight children.One night she dreamed Jesus enteredher home, put his hand on each child’shead, and said, not to worry because hewould be their father. She told Heatherand Dayna and asked them to tell herhow to get closer to Jesus.

According to Dayna, it’s not that thepeople willing to go as missionaries have

to be anything special. God is alreadyworking. He just wants “warm bodies”who love him and are willing to beinstruments of love.

Spiritual Landscape of North KOREA

Little is known about North Korea. Thissmall country of 22 million may be the

most secluded and mysterious nation inthe world. With intolerable livingconditions, people are escaping to Chinato find money, food and clothing. Eachday hundreds cross the Tumen River.These tell stories of millions who areperishing and suffering in the land of aruthless regime.

Famine in North Korea has claimedtwo to five million since the mid-1990s.That’s more than the famines in Ethiopiaand Somalia combined. Refugees reportthat at the height of the famine in 1997,there weren’t enough coffins for all thedead. Trucks drove through the villagesevery morning to pick up bodies on thestreets. People ate grass and tree bark.Malnutrition made many children blind.Nearly every refugee has personalaccounts of people eating other people.

In the 1940s, Christianity grewtremendously on the peninsula, especiallyin the northern half. According to someestimates, in1950 North Korea had 2,850churches, 700 pastors, and 300,000Christians. Pyongyang was called the“New Jerusalem.”

At the end of World War II Kim Il Sungrose to power. He outlawed all religion.Thousands fled south.

Interviewed refugees relate no conceptof God or religion. They were taught inschool that there’s no such thing as God.They had never heard of Jesus. They hadno concept of life after death. Theybelieve that once people die that’s theend. Interviewed refugees didn’t knowhow to pray, and didn’t even know whatprayer was. One refugee said he sawpeople praying in a movie on NorthKorean TV, but didn’t understand whatthey were doing.

The state indoctrinates North Koreansin the Juche philosophy. Instead of theHoly Trinity of Father, Son and HolySpirit, people are taught a trinity thatincludes Kim Il Sung, his mother Kim Jung Sook and his son Kim Jong Il. Thewritten style of national laws resemblesthe law of Moses. One refugee who was

learning about the Bible for the first timesaid he had an easier time understandingthe Old Testament than the NewTestament. Children give thanks to Kim IlSung and Kim Jong Il for their food.Photos of these leaders adorn walls toremind people of who supposedly caresand provides.

Refugees report that merely sayingthat you’re Christian results in immediatedeath. Two refugees took personal Biblesback into North Korea from China. Backin their hometowns, they kept the Bibleshidden. Some children discovered one ofthe women with her Bible. Sheimmediately disappeared, never to beheard from again.

North Korean defector Hwang JangYop, a former confidant of Kim Il Sung,said, “If someone really wanted to attendchurch, or declared allegiance to it, hewould be shot within five minutes.”

The government runs two officialChristian churches in Pyongyang. Theseare for show. Hwang said, “Those that gothere are state-ordered ‘believers.’”Knowledge of underground churches isminimal. Some report rumors of“Christian guerrillas” hiding out in themountains.

Despite deplorable conditions,starving refugees refuse to blame Kim IlSung. Even after receiving food and cleanclothes from relief workers the refugeeswill defend Kim Il Sung and get upset if

relief workers speak ill of their “great”leader.

From childhood, North Koreans areindoctrinated that North Korea is theworld’s wealthiest and best country. Theyare taught that America causes theirpresent hardships. They are also taughtthat the U.S. sends food and medicine aspeace offerings. One refugee who hadjust finished obligatory army duty saidthat many believe war is inevitable toreunite the Korean peninsula, and all feelif it comes to war, the North will win. Evenafter seeing the truth, he remainedsteadfast in defending North Korea.

Refugees share that they constantlyfear death. Many had seen or heard aboutpeople taken away in the middle of thenight for watching a foreign televisionprogram, listening to a foreign radiostation, criticizing Kim Il Sung or KimJong Il, or owning a Bible and praying.No one can talk against the government.People who complain are arrested andpunished. People live in fear of oneanother and are never free to share theirpersonal doubts.

Some Koreans reside in China. Someof these are Christians, and some of themare aiding North Koreans. These speakKorean and can sneak in and out ofNorth Korea. They deliver food andmedicine into North Korea and provideshelter for refugees who make it out toChina. One grandmother in China usessix ID cards at different border crossingpoints to deliver food and supplies.Koreans who reside in China are allowedto visit relatives in North Korea once ayear, but they cannot give humanitarianaid openly because that affronts NorthKorea’s self sufficiency and pride.

When refugees go back to NorthKorea they tell their trusted relatives orfriends what they’ve seen and heard. Moreand more North Koreans suspect thatthey are being tricked. Also, Christians inChina are impacting North Koreans.Many refugees come out to China havingbeen told by their friends to look forbuildings with crosses on them becausethat’s where they can receive help.

The Sword of the Prophet written by Serge Trifkovic

In this 300 page book, Serge Trifkovicuncompromisingly describes core

motivations and goals that should makeany non-Muslim shudder. His approach is primarily historical, though he alsotreats Islam’s theological foundations.Serge is rather like a non-Jewish versionof Daniel Pipes.

The first four chapters convincinglyshow that 9-11, rather than being anaberration of ‘a noble religion,’ is typicalof the historical record of the practicesand teachings of mainstream Islam. Inlight of this, the second to last chapter(‘Western Appeasement’) discusses theWest’s recent relationship with Islam.This chapter shows how the level oftrouble we are presently experiencingwith Islam is, to a very large degree, theresult of poor choices made by the Westover the past half a century. In the lastchapter (‘Jihad’s Fifth Column’) theauthor exposes the true nature of thekind of Islam that is presentlypenetrating the West. If unchecked,Serge leaves little doubt it will eventuallyforce undesirable changes upon ourwhole way of life.

Serge does not just describe; he alsosuggests a way out of the present mess.At the foundational level, Serge believesa change in worldview is needed. Hebelieves that the consequences of acontinued allegiance to secularism willbe devastating. Islam, he suggests,shows every sign of being more than amatch for a secular, pluralistic society.The best response, Serge believes, is toreturn to our Christian roots. Only whenour society can talk of ‘God’ in a publicand meaningful way, will we be able toadequately respond to orthodox Islam.

“Before its self-destructive civil war of 1914-1918, the Christian world wasas sharply defined as the Muslim world.Both were perfectly capable of definingthemselves against each other in acultural sense, and keeping theirtolerations and rejections in useful order. What secularism has done, since replacing Christianity as theguiding light of ‘the West,’ is to castaside any idea of a distinctly ‘Western’social, geographic, and cultural spacethat should be protected. This wasobvious in Europe by the early 1960s,and for the past quarter-century, at

least, it has become obvious in theUnited States. Patriotism rekindled afterSeptember 11 is a reminder that at thegrass-roots level the capacity forinstinctive self-definition is still alive, butit cannot be sustained if the dominantoutlook is that of cultural relativism andanti-historicism” (Introduction).

At the practical level, Serge providesseveral examples of what he believesshould be done. His solutions include: ! ending orthodox Muslim immigrationinto the West ! demanding Muslims not be allowed tobuild mosques or proselytize in the Westunless we are also allowed to buildchurches and proselytize among them. ! expelling any Muslim (possiblyincluding citizens) who believes inphysical jihad, or in establishing Shari’alaw. Serge does not appear to believethat it is possible for a practicingorthodox Muslim, in good conscience,to be a citizen of the United States. ! seriously developing alternative energyand ending dependence on Muslim oil.

Serge clearly believes Islam presentsas serious a threat to freedom in theWest, and the world, as the Nazis andCommunists. Just as in the cold war,Serge says that the West must practice aform of isolationism towards Muslimcountries, and a degree of intolerancetowards the religion of Islam. The reasonfor this intolerance by the West towardsMuslims is their doing, not ours.

“Islam, in Muhammad’s texts and itscodification, discriminates against us. Itis extremely offensive. Those whosubmit to that faith must solve theproblem they set themselves. Islamdiscriminates against all ‘unbelievers.’Until the petrodollars support a Koranicrevisionism that does not, we should gofor it with whips and scorpions, hammerand tongs. Secularists and believers ofall other faiths must act together beforeit is too late” (Conclusion).

Serge does not lose sight of theindividual Muslim. He agrees with ErnestRenan that “Muslims are the first victimsof Islam” and that, therefore, “to liberatethe Muslim from his religion is the bestservice that one can render him.”

One of the things I like most aboutthe book is that it is a political bookabout how to respond to Islam that

includes a role for Christianity. AsEvangelicals steeped in salvation as anindividual decision, and committed toseparation of church and state, we tendto struggle with the political side ofIslam. This book questions whether it ispossible to continue separating churchand state when orthodox Islam andChristianity meet. If this view is correct,Christians in the West have threechoices: playing politics against Islam,expelling orthodox Islam, or capitulatingand letting Islam take over.

If we change nothing in our presentresponse (or lack of response) toorthodox Islam’s advances, the mostlikely consequence will be that Islam willeventually take over the West. AsChristians, we should not lose sight ofhow bad it can get for us, and all othernon-Muslims, under Islamic rule. Wouldanyone like to volunteer a Christiananswer to whether we should submit toa government that requires us to givesome of our children to the state inorder to maintain the right to remainChristian? Should we submit to such astate knowing that those children takenby the state would be raised as Muslimsoldiers whose job would be to repressus? This ‘Christian tax,’ practiced in theBalkans for about 300 years (75 yearslonger than the United States hasexisted as a nation), must, contrary toMuslim wishes, never be forgotten.

My criticisms of the book are:1. As bad as it can be, I think Serge

overemphasizes Islam’s negativequalities. At times he fails to mentiondetails that would make Muslim behaviormore understandable. At times he isunfairly critical. Islam is not 100 percentbad. After reading this book you wouldthink that it was. In fairness to theauthor, he is trying to make a caseagainst the misdirection of presenttrends. As such it is not surprising thathe should focus exclusively on the pointsthat favor his side of the argument.

2. It is not a missionary book. Whileaddressing the religious dimension ofhow to respond, the positive Christianmotivations of love and concern for thewelfare of Muslims are not as clearlyemphasized as they should be. At timesit borders on creating irrational fear andhatred of Muslims.

Indonesians Feel Shame of Extremism An American teacher in Indonesia

reports that this past year’scelebration of the end of the fast monthwas one of the saddest and poorestever. Imagine having to celebrateChristmas without funds for parties,presents, and travel. After the holiday,Indonesia’s flagship English languagenewspaper, the Jakarta Post, reported,“Indonesia Marks Idul Fitri with Anguishand Simplicity.”

It’s not just economic hardship that’sdisrupting the national spirit, but agrowing awareness that Indonesia’spredicament has roots in Islam. Besidesthe attack in Bali that virtually shut downits lucrative tourism industry, extremistspunctuated Islam’s highest holy day byblowing up a McDonald’s in a provincialcapital. The same Jakarta Post articlereported, “The October 12 Bali terrorattacks that claimed almost 200 people,along with the bomb blast in Makassar,have been a slap in Islam’s face formany here, as the prime suspects are allIndonesian Muslims.” At one holidayservice the preacher, who’d lost relativesin the Bali bombing, reportedly criedthrough most of his sermon.

Muslims generally knowwhat to do when their religion isinsulted. They get upset, throwfits, and instigate riots, but withthis “slap in the face” comingfrom the country’s mostconservative Muslims, manyIndonesians are becomingdisenchanted with Islam.

Carl Cady, U.S. Director forInternational Friends ofCompassion, has spoken topastors in central Java whoreport that many Muslims aresecretly attending churches.These are saying, “If running intobuildings and killing innocent people iswhat Islam is all about, we don’t wantanything to do with it.”

Many Muslim leaders are trying todisassociate Islam from this kind ofextremism. A lot of holiday sermonsencouraged Muslims to do good deeds,nurture brotherhood with people ofother religions, and avoid activities thatwould bring shame upon Islam. Adevout 70-year-old man living down thestreet from a friend of mine in Indonesiasaid, “It’s the first time I’ve ever heard

them preaching what I’ve alwaysbelieved – that we should be friends withpeople of other religions.”

Just like most Americans claim to beChristians, but the majority of theserarely if ever go to church, so themajority of Indonesia’s 170 millionnationally registered Muslims are notregistered with local mosques and donot regularly attend religious services.Indonesia’s economic and religiousfuture will depend upon the courage,influence, and direction taken by thismoderate majority.
