Q. 1. Name the four main branches of Physical Geography. 1 Ans. The four main branches of Physical Geography

(i) Geomorphology (ii) Climatology(iii) Hydrology (iv) Pedology.

Q. 2. What do you understand by the term ‘Discontinuity’ ? 1 Ans. The boundary separating the different layers of the earth is called Discontinuity.

This demarcates the different layers of the earth having different densities.Q. 3. Why does the amount of solar energy received at the earth surface changes

when the altitude of the sun changes ? 1 Ans. When the sun is overhead, sun’s rays are vertical. But with the change of

altitude of the sun, oblique rays reach the earth, vertical rays are hotter than obliquerays. Therefore, the intensity of solar energy changes with the altitude of the sun.

Q. 4. Define the term ‘Decomposers’. 1Ans. The microscopic organisms and bacteria (Fungi and Earth-worms) who feed

on the decomposed and decayed organic products are called decomposers.Q. 5. Which peninsular river lacks a developed tributary system ? 1 Ans. Narmada river flows through a rift-valley. It is a peninsular river. It has not

any long tributary. None of the tributaries is more than 200 kilometres long.Q. 6. What is the process of Pedogenesis ? 1Ans. Soil formation is a complex process. Soil is formed under specific natural

conditions. All the physical, chemical, biological and cultural elements of the environmentact and react together to form the soils. Soil is the end product of these processes. Theprocess of soil formation is known as process of pedogenesis.
