Power Generation – HV Power Transformers CCGT Power Plants

Operation of CCGT Power Plants:

Flexible cycling of CCGT plants of paramount importance.

It entails frequent start-ups and shutdowns of conventional units, twice a week on average.

Units may be stopped approx. 4,000 hrs/yr.

Cost of Transformer Energization Transients:

Uncontrolled energizations of step-up transformers cause system-adverse transients : inrush currents, voltage dips.

When the units are stopped, the step-up transformers are left energized to avoid these issues.

Resulting no-load transformer losses = 600MWh* /year/unit

* Estimate : 350MVA - 330kV transformer / unit.

Power Generation – HV Power Transformers CCGT Power Plants – Example : Sorgenia - Italy

Flexible cycling of CCGT power plants

Frequent start-ups and shutdowns of conventional units, twice a week on average

Each unit stopped approx. 4000h/year

Est. costs of no-load transformer losses = 600MWh or approx. $40k / year / unit

SynchroTeq on two (2) units per plant : => Switching off/on two (2) transformers / plant => Cost-savings approx. $80k / year / plant

Asset preservation: elimination of inrush currents and stress on transformers and C/B

Frequent power transformer switching with no impact on HV power grid
