Solution

• A solution is a homogeneous mixture (a mixture where it all looks like one thing) where all of the components are in the same phase (solid, liquid, or gas).

Page 3: Solubility Notes

• Solvent – material found in the largest amount.

• Solute- material found in the smallest amount• Ex- salt water– Solvent- water– Solute- salt

• Dissolving-the process of a solute mixing in a solvent

Page 4: Solubility Notes

• Soluble- capable of dissolving in a solvent– Ex. Sugar in water

• Insoluble- not capable of dissolving in a solvent– Ex. Oil in water

Page 5: Solubility Notes

• Solubility Rules-– General Rule• Likes dissolve likes

– Polar dissolves polar– Non-polar dissolves non-polar

– Other Rules? • Learn in Chemistry

Page 6: Solubility Notes

• Saturated solution- a solution that has dissolved a maximum amount of solute, often leaving some solid solute on the bottom.

• Concentration= (amount of solute/amount of solvent)

Suspension

• A Suspension is a homogeneous mixture that all looks the same but is made up of more than one phase, like a solid and liquid, or liquid and gas.
