SOME of the cancers that most often affect Solomon Islands women

1. Breast cancer2. Cervical cancer 3. Ovarian cancer 4. Endometrial or

Uterine cancer Knowing about these

cancers and what you can do to help prevent or find them early when they are small and easier to treat may help save life.

1. Breast cancerBreast cancer is the

most common cancer that women may face in their lifetime. It can occur at any age, but the risk goes up as you get older. Because of certain factors, some women may have a greater chance of having breast cancer than others. But every woman should know about breast cancer and what can be done about it.

What you can doThe best defence is

to find breast cancer early – early detection. Breast self-examination can help detect any suspicious lump early. All women should be familiar with how their breasts normally look and feel and report any changes to a Doctor or Nurse right away.

2. Cervical cancer Cervical cancer can

affect any woman who is or has been sexually ac-tive. It occurs in women who have had the human papilloma virus (HPV). This virus is passed dur-ing sex. Cervical cancer is also more likely in women who smoke, have HIV or AIDS, have poor nutrition, and who do not get regular Pap tests.

What you can doA Pap test can find

changes in the cervix that can be treated before they become cancer. The Pap test is also very good at finding cervical cancer early, when it can often be cured.

3. Ovarian cancerOvarian cancer is

more likely to occur as women get older. Women who have never had children, who have unexplained infertility may be at increased risk for this cancer.

What you can doAt this time, there are

no good tests for finding ovarian cancer early. A Pap test does not find ovarian cancer. But there are some tests that might be used in women who have a high risk of ovar-ian cancer.

You should see a Doctor right away if you have any of these symptoms for more than a few weeks:

• Abdominal (belly) swelling

• Digestive problems (including gas, loss of appetite, and bloating)

• Abdominal or pelvic pain

• Feeling like you need to urinate (pee) all the time

4. Endometrial cancer (Uterine cancer)

Endometrial cancer (cancer of the lining of the uterus) occurs most often in women age 55 and older.

What you can doAll women should be

told about the risks and symptoms of endome-trial cancer. Watch for symptoms, such as unu-sual spotting or bleeding not related to menstrual periods, and report these to Nurse or doctor. The Pap test is very good at

Customer Provision Section on clean-up campaign

THE Customer Provision-ing Section within the Engineering Department conducted a general clean-up at their various offices on Thursday 29th Septem-ber 2016.

According to Grenville Tana (Manager Customer Provision), there were two offices that were tidied up. One is at the Honiara main

Exchange which is used by the Leased Services staff and one at Randi that is used by Customer Systems, Installations & wiring and Fault, Statistics & VOC staff.

He stressed that having received the HSW Check-list on the work place inspection has encouraged them to do the clean-up

one day before the due date on the September 30th 2016.

“We were just follow-ing the checklist that was issued by the HSW on removing or disposing of any items that could have been hazardous to the Staff working environment.”

“I would like to thank the Supervisors and staff of

Customer Provisioning for being very cooperative and have committed their time in doing the clean- up,” Mr Tana said.

He added that the gen-eral clean-up was very suc-cessful and now provides a safer working environment for them.

THE Telekom Solo-mon League (TSL) will conclude its round one games today after the eight participating clubs have gone through their eight respective matches in the past months.

The final match today will see Western United FC taking on Real Kakamora FC at 4pm. This match will also decide WU’s posi-tion on the current league standing currently top by Marist FC with 19 point

after defeating KOSSA FC this week. A win for WU will put them at the top of the table with 20 points.

Current Table standing as of 29/09/16:

Telekom Solomon League (TSL) update

GOOGLE’S ambitious in-itiative to provide internet for the entire world, even the most remote locales by floating giant balloons into the stratosphere is ready to take off into the next phase. ‘Project Loon’ - the futuristic project of the company’s experimental projects division Google X - is all set to take the huge leap with 20,000 helium-filled balloons ready to hover in the stratosphere above remote areas of Indonesia. Project Loon is targeting the world’s fourth most populous country because two-thirds of its citizens don’t have internet access, and for a country

that is struggling so hard to get cabled or wireless infrastructure out to its extreme limits, Indonesia is the perfect fit for satel-lite based internet access mechanism. It’s part of the company’s plan to help connect some of the billions of people around the world who remain offline, help fill coverage gaps, and bring people back online after disasters. Google believes they are on course to have enough internet-beaming balloons in the stratosphere to form a ring over part of the world by next year.

If all goes according to plan, the experiment

should achieve one of its goals in 2016, Mike Cassidy, vice-president of Project Loon said. “We need about 300 balloons or so to make a continuous string around the world. As one moves along with the wind out of range, an-other one comes to take its place. We hope next year to build our first continu-ous ring around the world, and to have some sort of continuous coverage for certain regions. And if all goes well after, then after that we will start rolling out first beta commercial customers.”~Business today

BLACKBERRY is to stop designing smartphones in-house after 14 years, the company has announced.

Once a market leader, the company has struggled to keep pace with modern handsets produced by rivals such as Apple and Samsung.

In May, the company’s chief executive, John Chen, said he would know by September whether the hardware business was likely to become profitable.

Now, Blackberry says it will outsource hardware development to partners.
