As the end of the school year comes to

a conclusion I would like to congratulate

our seniors and our 8th graders as they

continue the next step forward in their

lives. The spring is always a hectic time

but is also very exciting as young people

leave the walls of our schools and con-

tinue on to college, technical programs,

the workforce, or the military. I have

enjoyed working with each one of our

seniors and wish them all the luck as

they take the next step forward in their

lives.

As we begin planning and preparing for

the next school year our secondary

school will look a bit different when stu-

dents and staff return in August. The

current middle school will be repurposed

for the 4th-6th grade program, allowing

more space in the elementary. All of our

junior-senior high school classes will be

on the upper level and the lower Art and

FACS hallway area. This will allow for

closer supervision and walking distanc-

es to classes. Our vocational and fine

arts programs will remain in their current

location.

I would also like to remind students that

summer school credit recoverywill begin

June 1st and conclude June 26th. Clas-

ses will run from 8:00 am until noon and

will be facilitated by Ms. Paterson. In

addition Driver’s Education will begin

June 10th and conclude near the end of

June once all students have reached

their proper driver and passenger hours.

Once again, our cafeteria staff will serve

free lunch for all community members,

18 and under, beginning in June and

concluding at the end of July. The Solo-

mon Alumni Banquet will be held Satur-

day, June 6 along with the Solomon

Festival. I would encourage all alumni

to attend.

As with any school year, the 2014-15

school year had its ups and downs, but I

feel we are continuing to make progress

in ensuring our students are college and

career ready. Our ACT scores have

risen, discipline referrals decreased, and

number of ineligible students have de-

creased. I am excited about the future of

our school and district and look forward

to great things to come with our aca-

demics and activities.

The Bright Future of Agriculture

Francis Daily (left to right), Luke Ryan, and Ethan Thompson, entered a contest sponsored by the K.S.U. Department

of Agronomy called Willie and the Beanstalk. It is a contest open to high school, middle school, 4-H, and F.F.A. teams

interested in the scientific principles surrounding plant growth. Their challenge was to grow the largest soybean plant

in a 40-day time span and document the effort. They placed 3rd out of 60 Kansas high school teams. Mr. Daily spon-

sored the contest for Solomon High School.

Students Weave a Dramatic Web

Algebra I is adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing radi-cals. They will soon be getting ready to start a preview of Geome-try by finding the midpoint and length of line segments using the distance formula. Algebra II is solving complex frac-tions and rational equations. Most of the students just finished prep-

ping for the ACT and are now pre-paring to go on to College Algebra next year. Geometry is finishing up a unit on surface area and volume of prisms, cylinders, pyramids, cones and spheres. They will soon be explor-ing arc length and area of sectors of circles.

Schmaderer’s Numerical Update FCCLA hosted a Mock Interview Day. Two pro-fessionals interviewed students on April 29th.They were very impressed with how well students conducted themselves and an-swered questions. Con-gratulations to Maggie Aylward and Sarah Arnett for being selected by the interviewers as the best interviewees of the day! Ms. Paterson sponsors FCCLA.

A Rockin’ Field Trip for High School Students

Geology students Bailey Fynmore, Kord Hilbert, and

Cade Fiske took a a field trip to Rock City on Friday

to view the rocks. There are approximately 200

huge sandstone concretions at Rock City that cover

an area about the size of two football fields. The

sedimentary rocks formed millions of years ago

when Kansas was covered by an inland sea. The

softer surrounding sandstone has been eroded by

wind, rain, and floods leaving the stronger spheri-

cal concretions. Rock City is located 3.6 miles south-

west of Minneapolis, Kansas. Mr. Daily teaches geol-

ogy at Solomon High School.

a touch of seniorits, much is still happening in the English classroom. Both juniors and seniors are finishing up a novel in the last days of school. The seniors are reading the political dystopia 1984 by George Orwell. The juniors are reading a contemporary novel by Chris Crutcher. Iron-man is not the movie, but it follows a high school senior as he prepares for a triathlon.
