OVERVIEW

SOLO VIOLIN DESIGNER is a massive collection of over 4.000 phrases performed by renowned concert violinist: Thomas Yee. The intention of the library was to sample completely realistic solo violin by creating an incredible collection of musical phrases. We programmed the library in a way that gives you maximum control over the phrases and literally allows you to sculpt 100% realistic solo violin performances. It was deliberately designed to support, augment and in some cases replace existing solo violin libraries. Essentially this library takes over where normal multi-samples (ex. legato, sustains) can’t perform. This is what we call deep phrase-sampling.

SOLO VIOLIN DESIGNER comes with a variety of phrase sculpting tools, including pitch-control, time-stretching / time-compression, sample offset (which allows you to “scroll” into any phrase and trigger any part of it). The pitch-control is not affected by tempo, so by controlling pitch, time-stretching/compression and sample offset you can essentially adapt the phrase to match the pitch and tempo of your composition.

In addition we added a variety of other features. You can control the dynamics, attack and releases of each sample.

A RANDOMIZER has been added in order to give unlimited combinations in the search for the perfect performance.

We have included our 3.0 Chaos FX Engine, so out of the box, not only do you own a unique product, but also a product packed with effects that will give you unlimited possibilities to get the sound you’re looking for.

But don’t take our words for it. Check out this technical demonstration, which shows some of the main features in the library.

PATCH DESCRIPTION

Two patches are included in Solo Violin Designer:

K4 Browser.nki Version for Kontakt 4 and above.

K5 Browser.nki Version for Kontakt 5 and above.

The difference between the K4 and K5 version lies in Kontatk’s stability, performance and time stretching algorithms. You can use any of the versions included, however, if you own Kontakt 5, we recommend you to use the K5 patch for better results.

CC LIST

CC 1 - Sample Offset: Control where an individual phrase starts from.

CC 11 - Expression

Pitch Bend - Time Stretch/Compress a phrase to run slower (under 0) or faster (over 0).

USER INTERFACE

Page 8: Solo Violin Designer 2.0

MASTER BROWSER The master Browser has been designed to easily select any phrase groups from any category.

All the 4000+ phrases are included in the patch, once you select a category and a phrase group (for example BACH - Bach 1), that group will be loaded into RAM.

The NEXT PAGE button can be used to display more available categories. The MONO button enables monophonic mode: This means that every time a new phrase is played, the previous one will be muted. The RANDOMIZE button will load our randomizing engine, which will be explain later in this manual.

EXTRA CONTROLS A Key knob has been added to control extreme tuning changes (for more discreet tuning changes, the RED KEYS can be used).

A Tempo knob has been included to add a fixed time-stretch to all phrases. The Pitch Bend wheel can be used to control the speed of the phrases more dynamically.

The Dynamics knob increases the intensity of the dynamics used on the MIDI controller: When at 100%, the phrases will have no dynamics, whereas at 0% playing a key softly will play the phrase at a very low volume. Dynamics can also be controlled manually and dynamically using CC11 (regardless of the value of this knob).

The Attack and Release knobs control the softness of the attack and release of each phrase.

KEY MAPPING

The RED keys allow the user to lower/increase the tuning of the phrases (half-tone intervals).

The GREEN key sets the tuning of the phrases back to their default.

The BLUE keys are the playable range

Page 9: Solo Violin Designer 2.0

RANDOMIZE MODE

The Randomize mode has been especially designed to fulfill the needs of variation and innovation every musician needs when developing a unique.

Once the RANDOMIZE button is pressed, all the available categories will be hidden and unloaded from RAM.

It is very easy to use the Randomize mode: Once the SELECT button is pressed, a list of options will appear:

You can select random phrases from 2, 5, 10, 20, 40 or 80 random categories. In front of each option, there’s an average amount of RAM consumption based on the option selected.

Once an option is selected, random phrases from random categories will be loaded in almost 7 octaves.

Slots

We have included 4 slots where randomized combinations can be Saved/Loaded. Say that for example you really like the “Random” combination you have, but you want to look for new combinations: You just need to select a slot and press the SAVE button. Saving will overwrite any combination previously saved on that slot.

In case you want to load back a combination you had previosly saved, you just need to select the slot and press the LOAD button.

Depending on the option selected, loading the samples can take a few seconds.

Make sure you have enough RAM available on your system before loading a big amount of pieces from the SELECT menu.

SCORING TIPS SOLO VIOLIN DESIGNER is a deep phrase-sampled library - designed to augment and in some cases replace current solo violin libraries. The idea is give you a massive collection of phrases and phrase sculpting tools, but without compromising realism of this highly delicate instrument. The pitch-bender and modwheel are invaluable when it comes to sculpting phrases with this library. The pitchbender allows you timestretch/time-compress the phrase and modwheel allows you to control the sample offset. You really want to use these two features heavily, since they allow you to get the phrase to sync perfectly to your composition and together with the pitch control in the lower range of the keyboard you can do pretty much anything. The challenge is that you are working with phrases - and while you have over 4000 at your disposal it might sometimes be a bit overwhelming. The Randomize mode will help you select a random group of phrases out of the 4000+ available, you never know what's coming, you will love the way Mozart and Mendel sound together, and you can save and load combinations on the spot. The phrase sculpting tools (ex. time-stretcher, sample off-set control, pitch control) allow you to do many things, however we do encourage power users to use outside tools like melodyne when needed. Software like Melodyne and others allows you to sculpt deeper within a single phrase without compromising the realism. You should also try to play around with tuning. One of the great features of the library is that you can up- and downtune the pitch of the phrases without affecting their timing. This feature is golden because it allows you to retain the tempo of any phrase, while changing its pitch. Solo Violin can sound extremely cool when downtuned 1-2 octaves and will give you a complete different palette to work with. One important advice is to be open to combining different categories. It may seem wrong in theory to mix Bach with Brahms, but sometimes one of the other categories will have that ONE phrase you are looking for. But most importantly there is no right way of using the library. Its simple of matter of what is right to you. Go crazy on tuning and try out our mad CHAOS FX engine and blablabla ♥ T

ARP The arpeggiator has all the function you would expect and more. RATE allows you to alter the time signature of the arpeggiations. LATCH will hold the note progression even after releasing the keys. SWING will adjust the swing amount while OCTAVE selects the range the arp will play. REPEAT allows you to select how many times you would like each note struck, while LENGTH adjusts the amount of time a played note will be held for. STACK (only available when GLIDE is bypassed) will underlay any arpeggiation with the full untouched chord itself. MAIN/SEQ opens up the sequencer panel, this is used for drawing the velocity automation for the arp. To alter the arp “type“ simply choose from the PRESET dropdown menu.

The settings page consists of a PANNER control allows you to pan each successively played note in a different direction dependant on the WIDTH value. STEPS adjusts the amount of steps available in the SEQ panel, while PRESET CC allows you to select a CC to control the arp “type“ PRESET list, which is a great tool for altering the direction of the arp mid sequence.

Page 13: Solo Violin Designer 2.0

EQ controls a 3 band Equaliser, we have included a handful of useful presets to help you in sculpting your sound. We also have included a CHAOS control, this allows you to randomise every value, which is extremely useful for carving out new and interesting sounds.

The Settings page consists of a few vital controls to help control the CHAOS switch. Such as MOTION, which constantly randomises and animates every relevant parameter. RANGE which alters the amount of randomisation under both MOTION and CHAOS. And the CHAOS / FLOW switch which changes the type of randomisation available. CHAOS is purely random based on a value below your current settings and the RANGE, whereas FLOW analyses and adjusts your current settings depending on your RANGE allowing you to have a more subtle evolution of randomisation.

Page 14: Solo Violin Designer 2.0

DEGRADER consists of a BIT CRUSHER and a DISTORTION unit. Of course we also have included a CHAOS control, which allows you to randomise every value, which is extremely useful for carving out new and interesting sounds.

Page 15: Solo Violin Designer 2.0

DELAY consists of 2 sequential delays, this allows you to build complex rhythms and sequences by simply using different time values. Each delay has a wet MIX parameter, a tempo synced TIME control, and FEEDBACK and PAN controls to help control the style and power of the delay. We also went a step further, and added a a LOW and HIGH PASS filter to the end of the chain, this allows you to filter out certain frequencies only in the feedback of the delay ensuring it doesn’t conflict with your main sound.

And, you guessed it, we included a CHAOS control, so you are able to randomise every relevant parameter, creating some truly amazing delay patterns. Both delays and the filters also work intelligently, meaning if you are not using them or they are set to a minimal value, they will bypass themselves in order to save your CPU load.

Page 16: Solo Violin Designer 2.0

TRANSFORM contains a powerful impulse convolution with some truly strange and wonderful presets. To change what convolution is loaded, simply select the preset dropdown menu, and load any of our hand designed impulse responses. From fog horns, to car crashes, engine revs to world ending drones, we have included a handful of our favourite custom recorded and designed presets. If you are feeling indecisive, you can also select the CHAOS control, which will randomly assign a preset for you, as well as alter the available controls for some truly esoteric results. The included controls can help you further shape the convolution, such as MIX which alters the wet value of the insert, SIZE which stretches or compresses the impulse, PRE-DELAY which adds a small delay before the impulse is triggered, and of course a HIGH and LOW PASS FILTER, which allows you to shape the frequency of the impulse convolution layer.

Page 17: Solo Violin Designer 2.0

REVERB contains a powerful convolution reverb partnered with a digital reverb. To change what convolution is loaded, simply select the preset dropdown menu, and load any of our custom recorded impulse responses. We have included a variety, of real acoustic spaces we use and love, such as recording studios, churches, cathedrals and halls. As well as a few not so acoustic spaces we equally love. We have also crafted a quick and useful room positioner tool, by clicking anywhere in the “ROOM” area you can access a variety of crafted presets which load custom settings on top of your chosen convolution reverb. This is a great tool for quickly placing your sound in designed space. Or of course you can select the CHAOS control and let the engine do the choosing for you. The included controls are similar as to the TRANSFORM module except REVERB has a digital counterpart. This can be bypassed by using the DIGITAL ON/OFF switch.
