Reduction in Hazardous Waste
Historically, the Amnicola site disposed of
approximately 200,000 pounds of reclaimed styrene
every year.
Created an onsite recycling program to reclaim
styrene previously disposed as hazardous waste.
Reduction in Hazardous Waste
Found a buyer to use the styrene as a raw
material in another manufacturing process.
Results:
Reduced disposal costs
Reduced regulatory fees
The facility’s hazardous waste generator
status was reduced from a Large Quantity
Generator to a Conditionally Exempt Small
Quantity Generator.

25+ years of Leadership in
High-Performance Computing
Recent challenge: Design a more energy-efficient and
water-efficient system to run a computer 8 times
more powerful.
Summit system is capable performing 200 petaflops =
200,000 trillion calculations a second.
Upgrading & Integrating
New Designs
Challenge: Accommodate 20MW of
additional cooling load
Overhauled three 1,200-ton chillers.
Increased efficiency by up to 10%.
Designed new system to use warm
(70°F) water instead of conventional
cool water system. (saved $3.7m in
construction costs)
Data Center Power Use Efficiency
Net Results: Power Use Efficiency (PUE)
FY 2017 : 1.36 PUE
FY 2018 : 1.15 PUE
On track to be 15% more efficient than previous system
Computer uses 1/6th of the energy as its predecessor,
while producing more than 12 billion floating point
calculations per watt.

Wetland Restoration
Restored 88 acres of wetlands destroyed when the
site was a U.S. Army munitions base in the 1940-
1960s.
Wetland Restoration
Starting with 40 acres, the project grew to 88 acres.
Now home to hundreds of species of wildlife,
including 167 species of birds that migrate through
the property or have taken up residence.
Plan for Education Field Trips
The VW team is ready to begin hosting environmental
education on the property.
They picture school trips, aquarium guests and others
coming to learn.
Enjoy Nature & the biodiversity of wetlands.
VW Facility and Wetlands
VW - Sustainability
Solar Park contains 33,600 solar modules, producing
13.1 GWh/year
The power generated meets 12.5% of the plant’s
energy requirements during production.
Fulfills 100% of the demands during non-production.
