SOFA is now providing private instruction in flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, tuba, percussion and euphonium. Instruction is offered by a music specialist and takes place in the practice rooms located in the LCS Band Room before, during or after school. This is a great opportunity for students who are either looking for extra support on their instrument, are switching to a new instrument, or who wish to pursue their instrument outside the ensemble repertoire and into more soloistic opportunities. We began with some name games, animal charades, animal walks and tongue twisters and learned the terminology for the stage grid (upstage, downstage etc.) with mats. Our warm-ups include stretches, shaking our “sillies” out, and learning Right vs. Left when facing an audience. We’ve learned that vocal volume in theatre arts is known as “level” and used a “Levels Box” game to speak as quietly/loudly as a butterfly, kitten, dog, lion, and rooster. ‘Outside’ voices are allowed and encouraged when on stage! We’re learning about text pacing (fast/slow) and learning that a cast is an interconnected team that depends on one another for cuing into the next line and action on stage. We had fun with my furry, improvisation ball “Spot” creating “on the spot” improv story lines. Our mini-musical relies on team-work between the boys and girls and will be performed entirely by memory. Confident communication, teamwork and memorization are life-skills that go beyond the musical theatre class! Margot Sim, Director

T H E B E N E F I T S O F M U S I C E D U C A T I O N"The research is showing that learning to play an instrument leads to changes in a child’s brain that make it more likely they will reach their full cognitive and academic potential.

Parents will be heartened to know that studying music also brings children life-long health benefits. Scientific research is starting to emerge showing that life-long music training can offer improved cognitive function as we age. We already know that music therapy has helped people recover from strokes, and can be useful in treating a variety of neurological disorders, such as stuttering, autism and Parkinson’s disease. Music training has even been shown to delay the onset of dementia."

This RCM article informs readers about scientific and neurological research that shows music study helps children develop improved language abilities, increased emotional resilience, increased empathy, increased attention span and focus and increased self confidence.

Families with young children, take advantage of the joy of singing Christmas carols and have your child clap along with Christmas songs. The better your child is at handclapping songs before starting school, the more they will succeed academically from the start. Whether your child is at school yet or not, once they engage in handclapping training, their memory, handwriting and motor coordination improves. Once children are in private lessons, the benefits of learning different rhythm con-cepts increase success in math tests as opposed to children who are taught the traditional pen-and-paper way. Learning through music helped improve especially those pupils’ maths skills who were previously low achieving in mathematics.www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/03/120322100209.htm

These Christmas songs in more complex rhythms than the usual 4/4 time are great for sing-ing and clapping!
