SEQUENCE

All: Come, Holy Spirit, come!

And for your celestial home

Shed a ray of light divine!

Women: Where you are not, we have naught,

Nothing good in deed or thought,

Nothing free from taint of ill.

Women: Come, Father of the poor!

Come, source of all our store!

Come, within our bosoms shine.

Men: Heal our wounds, our strength renew;

On our dryness pour your dew;

Wash the stains of guilt away:

Men: You, of comforters the best;

You, the soul’s most welcome guest;

Sweet refreshment here below;

Women: Bend the stubborn heart and will;

Melt the frozen, warm the chill;

Guide the steps that go astray.

Women: In our labor, rest most sweet;

Grateful coolness in the heat;

Solace in the midst of woe.

Men: On the faithful, who adore

And confess you, evermore

In your sevenfold gift descend;

Men: O most blessed Light divine,

Shine within these hearts of yours,

And our in most being fill!

All: Give them virtue’s sure reward;

Give them your salvation, Lord;

Give them joys that never end.

Amen. Alleluia.

Salt for Pentecost PENTECOST: The Birthday of the Church!

So this weekend we begin our phased return to our places of worship, but the Church we return to is not the same as the one we left. Yes, our

beliefs are the same, our denomination and our creed haven’t change. Nor have our Scriptures, sacraments or our need to gather as community changed. But we have. The faith has not changed, but the Church has changed, and it needs to!

Pentecost celebrates the empowering gifts of the Holy Spirit which came as Christ promised. We are not alone on our journey but are called, individually and collectively, to open our hearts to these gifts so that we become the heart and hands of Christ. As one author put it, “Never waste a crisis!” How have we changed?

Maybe you (like me) have had time to re-evaluate faith and religious practices. Aren’t dinners with family and friends more important than running around being “busy” without accomplishing much? Aren’t we more aware of connecting with the elderly or assisting those who live alone than we were before? And isn’t longing to come to Church and receive Communion with the community gathered together different than trying to “get in a Mass” on a weekend already filled to overflowing with other more “important things”?

The Church has changed because we have changed. The old normal wasn’t really working, and the new normal we have yet to discover, but it’s coming. We can come out of this radically different and proclaim with changed lives that “Jesus is Lord.” Though many parts, we can be more “together” than we ever have before. We can be a better “Body of Christ.”

So let’s celebrate “Happy Birthday” in the Church and pray for a NEW YEAR of faith, of hope and of love.

Faith vs. Fear—The Covid-19 virus raised its ugly head over two months ago. We are patiently staying home, wearing masks and practicing social distancing. We have lost our daily routine and in many ways our sense

of self. Then along comes Pentecost. The readings have a powerful message for us about loss. Can you imagine how the apostles felt when they saw Jesus ascending into heaven never to be seen again or talked to again? It would be like losing your spiritual mentor—Father John, Sister Norma Jean, or a long list of those providing spiritual guidance to us. On the surface this seems impossible to handle. We can identify with the apostles as we face losses all the time: loss of youth, loss of health, loss of loved ones and loss of ability to do those things most precious to us. We have to find a new self, a new life. What is it about Pentecost that gives us the way to deal with loss? Read John 16 and you will find the answer. When Jesus left, he sent the Advocate. But who is this Advocate? The Advocate is the Holy Spirit. Did nuns try to explain the Holy Trinity using a shamrock—three persons in one God??!! That made no sense to me. But over time and many religious people educating us you gain an understanding of the Trinity. You realize the Holy Spirit is with us. All we have to do is ask for help. We need Pentecost in our daily lives.

Reflection: One way to experience the Holy Spirit is to make the Sign of the Cross every day (Father even provides the holy water for us where we pick up the bulletin). Seems like a simple thing to do but this prayer emerged two centuries ago. You trace the image of the cross with your hands over the upper part of your body. We are celebrating the Trinity. It gives us a certain self-confidence. It changes our identity. Just watch athletes as they sign themselves for all to see. They are proclaiming this is more than just me! It is honoring and offering our thoughts and minds to God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The key and sacramental power lies in your ability to do this consciously, lovingly and prayerfully. Richard Rohr, Franciscan Priest, author of The Divine Dance, The Trinity and Your Transformation, Albuquerque, New Mexico Stewardship—In the second reading today, St. Paul reminds the Corinthians, “There are different gifts, but the same Spirit, there are different ministries, but the same Lord. “ How am I using my gifts for the common good?

From Father John Haugen, Pastor on the Phased Re-opening

of Emmaus Pastorate Parishes This weekend we begin the long-awaited beginning of our return to a “new normal.” But before we get too comfortable, I want to reiterate that the

Church relies on the State data in making out guidelines. Our hope is to make this as easy as possible, while being as safe as possible. There are lots of moving parts in all of this as well as behind-the-scenes needs of preparing and cleaning. We need extra help with hospitality for the time being, and people need to feel “OK” with their ministries. Know that if we cannot get enough help, we will need to temporarily cancel Mass in that parish. All adults are expected to wear a mask for Mass and we will do our level best to make everything else a “go.” All of us will have to sacrifice a little in all of this, so complaints don’t really help—but constructive suggestions and comments are welcome. This IS our first pandemic after all! We continue to pray for researchers working on the virus and those suffering from infection. We also pray that our Emmaus communities might be a positive sign of hope and faith to the people of this part of Iowa. Many people will judge us on how we deal with this challenge. Let’s be signs of peace and joy to those around us. CONFIRMATION UPDATE! While Confirmation families have already received this information, we wanted to share this update… Several of the scheduled Confirmations had to be postponed and/or rescheduled due to COVID-19. Going forward, parishes had the option of having the Archbishop or their pastor as the presider for this sacrament. We are fortunate that Archbishop Jackels will preside for Confirmation on Saturday June 13, at 10:00 a.m. Sadly, due to social distancing guidelines, attendance will be limited to the Confirmation student and his/her sponsor only. Arrangements will be made for live-streaming of the Mass and families will be able to have their individual receptions at home. This is not the “normal” way for Confirmation to be celebrated, but we will do our best to make this a memorable sacramental experience for these young people. Pray for them, and for their openness to the gifts of the Holy Spirit as God blesses them through this special sacrament.

Please keep Chad and Selena Berry (St. Mary Parishioners) in your prayers. They recently experienced a devastating fire at their home.

Our community recognizes all the front line workers responding to our health care needs during this unprecedented time. One gesture is to provide lunch or dinner to the hospital staff. “Mary and Martha Meals” at St. Joseph, stepped up to the request by providing dinner to the night staff at Mercy Care, Elkader, on Wednesday, May 20. Madonna Hosch, Chair, Sally McGeal, Cindy Zapf and Alice White prepared and delivered the meal. Way to go “Mary and Martha for this act of kindness!!!. Nurses Olivia Timmerman, Cdeene Corzer and Kristen Pope accepted the meal from Madonna and Cindy.

A Prayer for a World Facing the Coronavirus Dear God,

It seems like lots of uncertainty around us. So many people who need prayers.

Today, I pray… For those whose health is compromised by the

coronavirus or other health issues. For those who suffer from the economic impact

of the virus, in travel, manufacturing, hospitality, energy or so many other industries.

For health care workers and first responders, and other public servants who put themselves in

harm’s way for us. For our leaders of the world, our countries,

states, and cities, as they seek to help manage this challenge

God, it can be overwhelming. But you tell us over and over again not to be afraid. Show me how to trust in you.

As I examine my heart, help me to turn away from my concern with self,

and turn my heart, hands, and prayers toward the concerns of others.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen
