Solar Sustainability at Symphony Honolulu
Challenge
A contemporary high-rise condominium including Velocity, JN Group’s luxury
car dealership, wanted to reduce and manage increasing electricity costs in
an environmentally sustainable way.
Solution
Symphony Honolulu and JN Group, owner of Velocity, worked with Energy
Industries to develop an innovative solar solution on the recreational deck
roof of Symphony Honolulu for the benefit of both.
Benefits
Symphony Honolulu’s residents reduce the cost of electricity for
common-use areas such as hallway lighting and recreational facilities,
while Velocity offsets electricity use for showroom lighting, service
department needs and air-conditioning.

COLLABORATING FOR COMMON GOOD
Great things can happen when neighbors work together. In Honolulu, two
neighboring parties developed a creative approach to energy that reduces
cost and improves environmental sustainability.
Symphony Honolulu is a luxury high-rise condominium in the heart of the
city. The 45-story, iconic glass structure soars 400 feet into the blue skies
with enviable views of the ocean and mountains, but lighting and cooling this
building is no small feat.
The Association of Unit Owners at Symphony Honolulu wanted to explore
solar as a way to defray costs and be environmentally conscious. At the
same time, JN Group was also seeking solar as a way to reduce their
electricity expense.
With the help of Energy Industries (EI), a leader in renewable energy and
energy efficiency solutions, the neighboring parties discovered that by
working together they could install solar PV systems that would benefit both.
The EI team designed a total of 162kW between the systems on the roof
of the condominium building’s recreational deck, installing 494 SunPower®
high-efficiency solar modules for the benefit of the two parties.
JN Group purchased their system outright, taking advantage of the system’s
production, tax benefits and incentives.
The condominium association elected to finance their system through a
power purchase agreement. TIVA Fund owns and operates the asset and
sells electricity generated from the system at a predetermined rate which
was less than the current utility rate at the time of system commissioning.
The Symphony Honolulu solar project stands as a shining example of the
good that occurs when neighbors work together.
