At Small Hope Bay Lodge, we care about our staff and our guests as family and are committed to

the local Andros community. We believe that as part of this commitment to our guests and community,

it is our responsibility to minimize our environmental impacts. Electricity on Andros is produced using

diesel generators which release significant amounts of pollution. Small Hope is doing its part to decrease

our dependence on diesel energy by creating this solar hot water system. It is our desire that this vision

will spread to the community and help our island nation move away from costly diesel power. The

following manual has been created in order to explain the solar hot water system that Small Hope has

adopted. This system was created specifically to provide reliable fast response hot water to our guests

and to be resistant to the hard salt water of the area.

o What is a solar hot water system?

Solar hot water systems (also known as solar domestic hot water systems) use

the power of the sun to heat water, instead of traditional fuels such as

electricity or gas. Solar hot water systems are often confused with solar

photovoltaics, which instead convert energy from the sun into electricity.

o Why solar hot water?

Solar hot water systems are a good way to save money and help the

environment. Although the initial cost to install a solar domestic hot water

system can be high, they pay for themselves by running on a free fuel, the sun!

For a commercial resort like Small Hope Bay Lodge, the generation of hot water

can account for up to half of the total energy usage, almost 100,000 kWh of

electricity per year.

It is also the right choice for the community and the environment because

renewable energy like solar power is pollution free. Using solar hot water here

on Andros means displacing the energy that would otherwise be generated

using diesel fuel. Fossil fuels like diesel release pollutants such as carbon

dioxide, nitrogen oxides, dioxins and sulfur into our air. These pollutants

contribute to global climate change, create smog and cause a range of health

problems.

Island nations like the Bahamas are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of

climate change. Some of these impacts, such as the increased rainfall in North

Western Bahamas and the decrease of rainfall in Southeastern Bahamas, have

already been observed. This change in rainfall will impact local farmers. Climate

change will also increase the temperature of some areas of the ocean and

change fish migration patterns, hurting the tourism industry of the Bahamas.

Climate change also increases hurricane intensity and can mean more severe

storm surges, flooding, and evacuations.

o What are the types of solar hot water systems?

Passive or Active: Solar hot water systems can be broadly divided into passive

and active systems. The distinction between the two types has to do with how

the water is circulated through the system. Active systems run on pumps, which

usually require some kind of control. The additional equipment adds to the

costs but also provides better performance. Passive systems do not have pumps

and instead use gravity or convection to move water. They are more reliable,

cheaper, and easier to maintain but they are not as efficient as active systems.

Direct or Indirect: Direct solar hot water systems use the suns energy to heat

water, which is then piped directly to the points of use. Indirect hot water

systems, in contrast, heat a fluid within a closed loop. A heat exchanger is then

used to transfer heat from the fluid into the water intended for use.

o What makes up a solar hot water system?

Solar hot water systems include a solar collector and some kind of hot water

storage unit. Collectors are the part of the system that take energy from the sun

and convert it into usable heat. Storage units are used to hold the heated water

within the system and are often as simple as a hot water tank. There are several

different options for collectors and storage units.

o What types of solar collectors are there?

Flat Panel: These collectors are very common and efficient. The collector is an

insulated box that absorbs the suns energy using a sheet of metal and thentransfers this heat to embedded copper tubes containing water. These panels

can be glazed, which means they are enclosed in layers of glass to better trap

the heat. Unglazed panels are cheaper and are often used to heat pools.

Evacuated Tube: These collectors are made of water tubes lined with an

absorbent metal sheet and housed within glass tubes. A vacuum area without

air is created between the glass tube and the metal sheet, preventing the

movement of air and eliminating the heat lost through convection and

conduction. The trapped heat is then used to heat water. Evacuated tubes are

more expensive but also more efficient than flat panel collectors (up to 97%

efficiency). These systems are best suited for cold weather areas because the

insulating properties of the vacuum tubes.

Integral Collector Storage (also known as Batch Systems): These are the most

common homemade collectors made of black tanks or tubes in an insulated box.

Many people will repurpose old water tanks and place them into covered

insulated boxes surrounded by reflective material to make these batch

collectors. Water storage is combined with the collector in these systems. The

water is directly heated and stored in the collectors. These collectors are simple

and easy to build but they produce limited amount of hot water and are not

meant for larger applications without conventional backup water heaters. These

are best for household applications in warm climates where most hot water is

used in the later part of the day and early evening.

o What kind of system does Small Hope Bay Lodge have?

We decided to create an active indirect system with flat panel collectors.

o How does the system at Small Hope work?

The system is made of two separate loops, one with distilled water (Loop A)

running through the flat panel collectors and another with regular tap water.

The panels heat up the distilled water in loop A which will be circulated through

a heat exchanger using a small pump. The heat exchanger will heat up the tap

water in loop B before it is sent to the hot water tanks and out to the end use

location (cabins, kitchen, laundry etc) and re-circulated back to the hot water

tanks. Loop A, the distilled water loop, is a closed loop and the water in it

remains the same. Loop B, the tap water loop, is an open system that has new

water coming in as water is taken out by users.

o Why did Small Hope choose to install this type of solar hot water system?

We choose an active system circulated with a pump in order to provide reliable

hot water for the resort.

We choose to create an indirect system in order to isolate our panels and coresystem components from the corrosive, hard, saline water. To avoid the

corrosion from the hard water, we decided to create this two loop system (one

open and one closed loop). We only use distilled water in our close loop which

contains all of our harder to replace components (solar panels, copper tubing,

etc).

We choose to circulate loop B through the entire resort in order to meet Small

Hopes large scale water usage and guests instantaneous expectation for hot

water. Circulating hot tap water throughout the resort decreases the lag in hot

water delivery.

Loop A: Shown in the blue in the picture on

the left. This loop contains distilled water in

order to protect the most crucial parts of the

solar hot water system (collectors, copper

piping) from corrosion. This is a closed loop

system and continually circulates to draw

heat from the solar collectors.

Loop B: Shown in the red, this loop is made

of flexible pex tubing and delivers heated

tap water throughout the entire resort.

Distilled water in Loop A is first heated by

the flat panel collectors and is then

circulated through the heat exchanger to

dump heat into loop B. Rheem propane

heaters are installed directly before the end

use area as backup to the solar hot water

system. The final end use water temperature

is limited by the thermal expansion valves as

a safety measure.

The system was designed for the worst-case scenario, i.e. low solar availability and high hot water demand. Based on these

calculations and the geographical clusters of the cabins, the following zones were established to minimize the amount of back up

heaters needed:

The hot water tanks will be arranged in a 2 x2 formation and connected by 3 manifolds. Cold water will enter the system through the

top 2 PVC manifold. The hot water will exit the tank through the middle CPVC manifold and enter the 1 pex tubing to the rest

of the resort. The hot water is re-circulated and enters the bottom CPVC manifold to reenter the hot water tanks from the heat

exchanger. The hot water manifolds are designed in an H shape in order for the water to enter all 4 tanks simultaneously and at

the same pressure/flow rate.

Based on our zones, which typically contained 4 cabins, our backup

heaters are required to provide at least 6 gallons per minute (1.5

gallons per minute shower flow rate) at 35F temperature rise. After

researching several options, we found the Rheem RTG-64XP (capable

of providing up to 6.7 gpm at 35F) to be the best fit for our needs.

Next, we calculated the maximum hot water delivery time to

determine the optimal distance the Rheem heaters can be installed

from its final end use. The final placements of the heaters ensured hot

water delivery time to be < 1 minute to all but three of the cabins.
