Nazdar Brothers and Sisters,

Summer is coming and your Unit Property Committee is already making preparations for another

wonderful season at the camp! The camp clubroom bartender sign-up is available here and the

newly formed Activities Committee is already lining up various social events.

The leaves were not picked up last fall because of the weather, so look for ‘leaf clearing parties’

coming soon. With all the rain during the hayride, the parking area will need some repairs as

well. Camp Cleanup will be May 12/13 (rain date May 19/20) – plan on coming out to help!

This year, the UPC is adopting a ‘clear shoreline’ policy. Besides helping with mowing &

maintenance, it will further beautify our shoreline. We will be applying the rule that

states: “Storage of small watercraft (kayaks, row boats, etc.) on the shoreline during the boating

season requires UPC approval.”

To clarify this – members with dock sites may moor watercraft on the lake side of the seawall, but

not on the camp/grass side. Members may leave small watercraft (e.g. canoes, rowboats,

kayaks, paddle boats, stand up paddle boards) along the shoreline before and after use,

however such watercraft shall not be ‘stored’ on the shoreline when the member is not present at

Sokol Camp or Sandy Bottom Lake. Individuals requesting an exception to this policy may do so

anytime in writing or in person at any upcoming UPC meeting.

Continuing on the theme of keeping Sokol Camp beautiful, the UPC will work to remove items that

shouldn’t be stored at the camp. We are looking for the owners of a few things – contact us if

they are yours:

Remember that UPC approval is required each year to keep anything at the camp that isn’t

already covered in the rules (for example, boat trailer of a launched boat is ok to be in the

woods).

While some of these guidelines may not have been enforced much in the past, we are working to

further improve things at the camp, so please expect that the UPC will exercise greater diligence

in upholding current guidelines.

Now would be a good time to review those Property Management and Use Guidelines. If you

have a question or suggestion, please engage with your Sokol Brothers and Sisters, and vocalize

your concern. Sokol Detroit is our unit, and the Property and Use Guidelines should reflect the

needs and desires of the unit at large.

Unit Meeting Minutes

March 6, 2018

First Vice President, Sr. Carol Brandon, called the teleconference meeting to order at

7:01PM. Fifteen members attended at Sokol Center; seven members via teleconference.

Correspondence: Newsletters were received from Sokols Greater Cleveland, Sydney, St.

Louis, Sokol USA Times, Czech Catholic Union, Sokol Spirit, The Ukrainian Weekly, and a flyer

from Czech and Slovak Sokol Minnesota listing their spring 2018 events.

Treasurer: Sr. Ann Marie Hurych reported on the February 2018 balances.

Financial Secretary: Sr. Kirsten Conely was excused, and Sr. Greene reported membership

totals. To date, there are 254 Sokol Detroit members in good standing. Resigned: Melissa

Zarro, Roger Parker, Denise Couling, Don Willis, Sherry Locke, Derek and Darlene Cresson,

Serghei Kandikov, Laurie and Linas Poleraitis, Alejandra Frommert. Terminated: Victoria and

Mark Christenson, Holly Rash, Nebojsa Dimic, Mario Frankini, Anne and Peter Veach.

UPC: Br. Novacek reported on the February 15, 2018, UPC meeting. The members

reviewed the budget that Br. Novacek presented at the January 2018 Unit meeting. Sr.

Lindsey Cortis resigned from the UPC board. There is an issue at the Center regarding

illegal use of our dumpsters. We are installing fake security cameras and posting illegal

dumping signs. New Board officers are: Br. Novacek, President; Jonathan Conrad, Vice

President; Scott Brandon, Treasurer; David Bares, Secretary. Rental Agreements are being

reviewed, and it is hoped that they will be ready for approval by the next Unit Meeting.

Camp: continuing to collect lot lease and dock site payments; parking lot repairs and

camp cleanup will begin soon; emails have been sent out asking for volunteers for the

weekend bar; a new conference call system is being used tonight and for future UPC

meetings.

The Sokol Detroit Activities Committee Preliminary Events Calendar was prepared and

distributed via email. The Committee, comprised of Srs. and Brs. Amanda Knapp, Joe

Michalek, Alex and Meg Novacek, will report monthly. As we get closer to each event,

special notifications will be sent out. Sr. Bares asked if someone is willing to provide an

activity, can he/she run an event? Volunteers are welcome. Any suggestions for future

activities can be forwarded to committee members.

New Business: Sr. Greene asked: 1) If Sokol Detroit wishes to sponsor a coffee break at the

American Sokol XXI Convention, Cleveland, Ohio, April 26-29, 2018. A motion was made by

Sr. Bares to sponsor a coffee break, Sr. Nancy Ritter seconded, and the motion carried; 2) If

Sokol Detroit should also support the Night at the Races Event at the Convention. Br.

Novacek recommended an advertisement. Br. Randall Ritter made a motion to sponsor a

½- page advertisement, Sr. Greene seconded, and the motion carried.

3) Sr. Greene asked if we wish to send alternate delegates to the Convention. After much

discussion on this issue, it was decided to defer this request until the next Unit meeting.

The next Northeastern Teleconference will be held April 10, 2018, at 7:00PM.

Bylaws: Sr. Meg Novacek reported on the latest pre-convention committee proposed

changes to the 2018 Bylaws revised as of February 5, 2018, and asked the membership

present for input or suggestions. Sr. Bares made recommendations for changes and

additions to the proposed Bylaws, and Sr. Novacek will bring up these recommendations at

the next Bylaws meeting on March 15, 2018.

Budget & Finance: Br. Novacek reported on the latest Budget & Finance committee

meeting, which is preparing to finalize the ASO four-year Budget. In addition to requiring

membership dues increase of $1.50 to $36.50 per year needed for a $23,000 shortfall to

balance the budget, he reported that a proposed Bylaws change, eliminating the

membership requirement of parents of youth members, also reduces the total income

needed for the four years. An additional dues increase by remaining members may be

needed to come up with the deficit. This will be discussed at the next meeting of the

Convention Budget & Finance Committee.

Sr. Brandon then asked the members present if there is anything for the Good of the Order.

As there was nothing from the floor, Sr. Brandon announced that the next Unit meeting will

be held at the Center at 7:00PM on Tuesday, April 3, 2018. The meeting was adjourned at

8:41PM.

Respectfully submitted,

Rose Wiggle, Co-recording Secretary

Gate left open recently for expected visitors, it will start getting closed next week.

Lot lease fees will be increased by 2.5% for 2018. Dock lease fees will not change. Boat

Will setup Porta-John on top of hill for sledding parts, etc.

New business

Center clubroom will get some updates (different refrigerator, new stock).

Camp Clubroom signup for 2018 season:

o Will start by using signup genius as before to let people pick their own dates.

o After this, we will ‘assign’ people to other nights to fill in the schedule.

o Encourage inviting friends, having parties/themes to rekindle interest.

2018 UPC budget to be developed by Alex and Diane – likely similar to 2017.

Project list to be reviewed/presented. Follow through on these needs to be better.

Alex to suggest creating an Activities Committee for Unit consideration. A group to lead

activities throughout the year (at camp and center) to better promote member

participation (examples: dancing, band, bowling, cards). Group would create schedule

and budget. Volunteers needed for this new committee.

Clutter at the camp and items on the shoreline will be further discussed in January.

Next meeting is January 11. It will likely be in person, but also with a call-in number.
