the exodus from Egypt. A great army and a power-ful Pharaoh had been inexplicably defeated by a rag-tag and under-armed band of freshly freed slaves. All Amalek could see was an opportunity for exploita-tion.

So what is it we are to remember when we fol-low the command, “Remember…Amalek…”? It is acommand to see evil when we encounter it and toexpose it for the evil that it is. This is a commandto confront evil even as it lurks about on the fringesof legitimacy. Because evil will prey on the weakestof our society: the poor, the homeless, the sick, andinfirm. We Jews have been the prey countless times, but it is not enough to remember evil for our ownsakes. It is God’s command that we rememberAmalek for the benefit of mankind…

Our sages of old tell usthat the evil Haman,

whose name we “blotout” during every reading of Megillat Ester withgroggers, yelps, and boos, was a descendant ofAmelek. Amalek, in Jewish tradition, not only rep-resents evil, Amalek epitomizes evil.

Remember what Amalek did to you, on the waywhen you were leaving Egypt... (Deut. 25:17-19)

Mordechai’s insistence that Ester speak out andact against Haman can easily be seen as his respon-sibility towards obeying one of God’s commands. Andwhy is Amalek so significant? Hundreds of nationshave oppressed, attacked, and tried to annihilatethe Jewish people. Why are only the Amalekites men-tioned? They were not the first nation to attack usas we left Egypt (the Egyptians pursued us to theReed Sea).

Where the Amalekitesset themselves apart wasthat they attacked uswhen no one else dared. After the splitting of theSea of Reeds, “The nationsheard... fright grippedthem” (Exodus 15:14).Even the strongest andmost evil nations were dulyimpressed by the TenPlagues and the splitting ofthe Sea. It may have beenin their instincts to attack an ill-equipped caravan offormer slaves, but they were convinced they wouldgo into battle against a mighty God that was clearlywilling to alter the battle field in favor of the He-brews.

Amalek, unlike the other nations, was unim-pressed. What gave them the audacity to attack ata time when the entire world recognized God’s pro-tection of the Jewish People? Amalek lacked the req-uisite humility to realize that something larger thantheir sphere of understanding was at work during

By now you should have received your informationof the upcoming board elections to be held on

Sunday, February 21 from 8:30 to 12:30. For thosewho are not aware the SOJC bylaws call for the mem-bership to elect the board members. The board thenelects the officers from among the members of theboard at the first board meeting following the elec-tions.

By the time you receive this newsletter, RabbiLevy will have completed her second January week-end at SOJC. This column is being written betweenthe two visits. First, I would like to thank MicheleFischer and her team for the delicious Friday eveningmeal they prepared on Friday, January 15. I wouldlike to thank Marian Bromberg for her work on theShabbat luncheon Kiddush. The weekend of January15, being the week end of Martin Luther King’s birth-day, Rabbi Levy gave an interesting Sermon withquotes from Martin Luther King, and tying it intothe Parsha (weekly Torah portion) of the week. (Aninteresting side comment. If you look over King’sfamous “I have a dream” speech, you will noticemany references to the Tanach, the Jewish Bible, but no references to the Christian Bible, or any ref-

erences to Jesus.) Rabbi Levy followed with a shorttext class after Kiddush looking at the role of com-munity and involvement with the community in prayer. For those of you who have yet to have the pleasureof meeting Rabbi Levy I invite you to join us duringher next visit.

During the month of February, the evening ofSaturday, February 27 and Sunday, February 28, wecelebrate the holiday of Purim. Rabbi Levy will bejoining us for that Shabbat. We will be reading MegilatEsther on Saturday night, and we invite you all toattend from the youngest to our oldest members. You are encouraged to come in costume, and as louda noise maker as you own. On Sunday starting at11:00 am we will have the annual Purim Carnival, with all of its festive activities. We will be endingthe Purim festivities with a sports outing to see aMagic game at the arena in the evening. See else-where in the newsletter for the details and how tomake reservations. Here is a Purim trivia question:how many times does God’s name appear in theBiblical Book of Esther that we read on Purim?

In honor of Purim the Adult Education Commit-tee Film Series will be showing the movie based uponthe Purim theme. The exact title will be announcedshortly, before you receive the newsletter. Checkwith the SOJC calendar for the exact title, date andtime.

Also being sponsored by the Adult Education Com-mittee is the continuation of the Jewish History Sur-vey Course. This course covers the period from Bib-lical times to the present, and is based upon theseries of nine hour long lectures that Abba Eban (theformer and long time Israeli Ambassador to the UN)gave on PBS television around 1984. The structureof the class will be to first view the hour long lectureon DVD followed by a discussion period. This is anintroductory course, and no advanced knowledge isassumed. Classes are on most Sunday mornings whenthere is Hebrew School beginning at 10 am. Checkwith the SOJC calendar for the exact date and time.Since each lecture stands by itself, you can startattending even if you have missed some of the ear-lier lectures. If there is enough interest we canarrange for viewings of the earlier lectures for thosewho missed them.

Back in the swing of things!! I hope everyone hasgotten over the hectic pace and costs of the win-

ter holidays and you are getting excited about theupcoming Purim holiday. The thought ofHamantaschen makes my mouth water. Our Jewishholidays are all about the food, aren’t they? TheRabbi and Cantor may disagree with me on that, butour upcoming Sisterhood events revolve around food.

On February 28th, we encourage everyone to at-tend our annual Purim Carnival, sponsored by thePTA. This is a major fund raiser for our religiousschool, which we hope you will support. Personally, Iam going for the food! (and the terrific raffle items). We also have the non-Gala Gala fund raiser to raisethose much-needed funds for our shul! Purim is animportant time for giving to charity, and we hopeyou will give generously to both of these efforts.

On MARCH 7th, Golde Finkler will be providing atraining to use the SOJC kitchen for all interestedparties at 9:30 AM. This training is meant to edu-cate our members regarding keeping kosher andmaintaining the organization and cleanliness of ourkitchen, which we worked so hard to accomplish thisyear. If you use the kitchen for any purposes, youreally need to attend this training. If you would liketo be able to help in the kitchen or use the kitchenfor events, you will want to attend this training.Meet us in the kitchen with your note pad. Pleaseemail or call me (contact info below) to let me knowyou are coming!

On MARCH 14th, at 10:00 AM, we will have aCooking Demonstration to enhance our Passover

In January Shana Medel, Josh Fischer, and CubbyRubenstein led Shabbat services beautifully. Un-

fortunately, the targeted date for the CC Shabbatwas also the weekend of the SATs and the predomi-nance of our teens were unavailable to read Torah. Ihope to avoid that problem in February as RabbiLevy visits us over the Purim weekend. I look for-ward to seeing all of our teens back into the Sanctu-ary to lead services or read from our Tanach!

We extend a hearty Mazel Tov and yasher kochehto Chelsea Bourekas on the occasion of her Bat Mitzvah.I look forward to your continued participation in ourcommunity!

Here’s our schedule:Saturday, Feb. 27 ....Cantorial Corps Torah Reading

This January Bella Katz, Mel Marsel, and Sy Sandickall chanted Haftarot beautifully. Lewis Klapper,

Jules Gelade, Yvonne Bleecker, and Henry Friedcantillated the Torah with precision and confidence.Mel Marsel, Stephen Meshover, and Alan Roufa alsoassisted in leading services on Shabbat morning. Thecongregation appreciates the effort that each of youputs into preparing for your participation, and theyfrequently stop me to comment on how much theyenjoy seeing you and hearing you represent them onthe bima. Thank you all for your dedication to ourcommunity.

These adult Laypeople are an inspiration to usall. Some of them have honed their skills all theirlives, but most have come to their mastery of theseskills during adulthood and continue to practice theseskills in service to our synagogue. There are a num-ber of adults who have trained to participate morefully in our Shabbat services. If you would like tolearn, or want to get on the list to read Torah,Haftarah or to lead a service, or if you just want
