RASHI: The Milestone The Milestone events celebrate the development of our children, as they grow toward being a Jewish leader, carrying within them familiarity with Jewish texts and a value system shaped by Torah ideals. On Thursday our exuberant 3rd graders showcases their pride and joy in adding to their Jewish repertoire the ability to read, comprehend, and appreciate the insights offered by the classical Torah commentator, Rashi (1040 -1105 CE). What was fun for the family who attended was the interactive dimension of being called upon to participate on stage with the students, and then to be engaged by them in learning stations, all conceived and carried out by the students themselves. It was as close as having Rashi himself visit Hebrew Day as it could get!
Building upon Otiot (aleph bet), Siddur, Chumash, and looking ahead to Siyum Bereisheet and the M&M Fair, we can see these 31 children well on their way to fulfilling our greatest hopes and aspirations for the blossoming of Jewish life. Special thanks go to Morah Michal Shapiro, Judith Halperin, Carrie Lane and all the parent volunteers that made this event so special!

Parshat Behar-Bechukotai OVERVIEW: Behar / Bechukotai (Lev. Ch. 25:1 – 27:34) Behar: The Torah prohibits normal farming of the Land of Israel every seven years. This "Shabbat" for the land is called "shemita". After every seventh shemita, the fiftieth year, yovel (jubilee) is announced with the sound of the shofar on Yom Kippur. This was also a year for the land to lie fallow. G-d promises to provide a bumper crop prior to the shemita and yovel years. During yovel, all land is returned to its original division from the time of Joshua, and all Jewish indentured servants are freed, even if they have not completed their six years of work. A Jewish indentured servant may not be given any demeaning, unnecessary or excessively difficult work, and may not be sold in the public market. The price of his labor must be calculated according to the amount of time remaining until he will automatically become free. The price of land is similarly calculated. Should anyone sell his ancestral land, he has the right to redeem it after two years. If a house in a walled city is sold, the right of redemption is limited to the first year after the sale. The Levites' cities belong to them forever. The Jewish People are forbidden to take advantage of one another by lending or borrowing with interest. Family members should redeem any relative who was sold as an indentured servant as a result of impoverishment. Bechukotai: The Torah promises prosperity for the Jewish People if they follow G-d's commandments. However, if they fail to live up to the responsibility of being the Chosen People, then chilling punishments will result. The Torah details the harsh historical process that will fall upon them when Divine protection is removed. These punishments, whose purpose is to bring the Jewish People to repent, will be in seven stages, each more severe than the last. Sefer Vayikra, the book of Leviticus, concludes with the details of erachin - the process by which someone vows to give the Beit Hamikdash the equivalent monetary value of a person, an animal or property. CHAZAK CHAZAK (C) 2017 Ohr Somayach International
DRASHA: The book of Vayikra, which contains so many detailed commandments and minute details of ritual within it, concludes with a broad view and general description of Jewish faith. It restates the original premise of Beresheet, that the earth and its inhabitants belong to G-d and are free agents as to the limits that G-d has imposed upon them. The basic premise is that “the earth belongs to Me.” All of the various laws of agriculture that apply in the Land of Israel are based on this simple declaration of the sovereignty of God over the domain where humans temporarily reside. We storm about asserting our ownership and build for ourselves palaces as though we will be their eternal tenants. It is this false assessment of the true nature of life that leads to painful disagreements and dysfunction in families, communities and even in the relationship between countries and national entities. The power of self-grandeur unfortunately knows no bounds in the human psyche. The prophet mocks the Pharaoh of Egypt who evidently thought that he created and controlled the Nile River. Our world is witness to tyrants who made and make themselves gods and ascribe to themselves the power to dominate the lives of millions, and to threaten the destruction of millions of others, who do not bow to their inflated will. The truth is that the closer one is able to come to godliness, so to speak, that person will become more humble and recognize his or her true place and space in this world. And that is the secret of attaining humility and which
is ascribed to our great teacher Moshe., The Torah also limits the control we have over of the lives of others. The Lord informed the Jewish people that they are His servants. People have somehow convinced themselves that they truly are entitled to control the lives of others. Perhaps this arises from the necessity of parents to raise their children to adulthood. Yet the economic system that currently governs our lives allows little room for consideration of the needs of others. Human lives are unfortunately secondary to the almighty bottom line and this affects the entire balance of society generally. If we realize that we are all only God’s servants, that humbling effect should make life easier to deal with. The realization of the limits of human power is one of the basic lessons of Judaism. Of course human beings are able to accomplish great things and this is the story of the advancement of human civilization throughout the millennia of history. It is the balance of this aspiration and the human drive for greatness coupled with the humble realization of our limitations, which the Torah wishes us to achieve. Care and concern for others, an appreciation of G-d’s ownership of the earth and a belief in the guardianship of G-d over the land and its people are the key ingredients, in the Torah’s view, of the Jewish future. And that is a basic understanding of the lesson that the Torah and this week’s pasha teaches us. Shabat shalom. Rabbi Berel Wein (C) 2017

Great job second grade!! For the B class, time tournament has ended and the scores are in:
1st place: Zahara Klein 2nd place: Almog Mizan 3rd place: Avigail Freeman
Second grade has been working hard in math this week! Each group had to plan a themed class party with enough food and supplies for everyone in the class. They looked up items online, decided how many of each item they needed, added up their costs, and compared their total costs to their budget. Today, they presented their party plans to the class!
Hebrew Day Happenings
Students Call Soille Home On The weekend
The girls of Soille middle school got together last Saturday night at school. They celebrated LagBaOmer with a fun bonding ex-
perience. An overnight at school! It wad filed with great activities. We held an auction with funny money and teacher donated
gifts. (Thank you middle school teachers for your support, humor, and donation to enhance the evening.) We played a crazy
game of capture the flag. And to end off the activities, we had our very own Soille bonfire! The girls made smores, a scary story
was told, and the story behind LagBaOmer was shared. All the girls expressed their love for our school and how they'd do an
overnight once a month if possible! Thank you to Rachel Hudlow and Morah Weiser for chaperoning the evening! Thank you to
student leadership council for all your hard work to make the overnight a reality!

Hebrew Day Happenings Under Construction
The 6th Grade girls' Chumash class has culminat-
ed their learning of the Mishkan (Tabernacle -
traveling "House of G-d" in the desert) by con-
structing miniature versions of the vessels found
within it. Each girl not only constructed a ves-
sel, but they were responsible for creating a
Google slide presentations and forms for their
fellow classmates to review all the material we
learned together. It was truly a special way to
review the material.
