Compaction concept
Increasing unit weight of soil by reducing air voids in order to make use of ground surface for development,i.e.buildings,roads etc. by applying a load over a small area air gets out from unsaturated soil
Factors affecting compaction
Types of compaction Rolling or kneading-most effective for clayey soil Vibrating –most effective for nonclayey soil Dropping a heavy weight-suitable for both type of soils
Moisture content
Soil type
Compactive effortMore enery-greater compaction
Method of compaction
Soil Compaction in the Field:
1- Rammers
2- Vibratory Plates
3- Smooth Rollers
4- Rubber-Tire
5- Sheep foot Roller
6- Dynamic Compaction
Laboratory compaction of soil
Standard proctor test(light compaction test)
Modified proctor test(heavy compaction test)
Comparision curve
FIELD COMPACTION CONTROLThe field compaction control consists of the
determination of,1) Dry density2) Water content
1) DRY DENSITYMeasured using core cutter and sand replacement method. The degree of compaction achieved in the measured by the
relative compaction, which defined as the ratio, expressed as a percentage.
Relative compaction,
2) WATER CONTENT Measured using oven drying method. In the field water content determined using,
Sand bath method Alcohol method(the calcium carbide method) The nuclear method Proctor needle method
conclusion Ultimately compaction is depending on the void ratio of soil Compaction is a factor of practical importance is the
increase of soil strength and stability. Now a day in urban area land is one of the most common
problems In such case if soil’s engineering property is not up to the
requirement then there is no way without abandon that project
So in that case soil compaction can be applied as a one of the most economic ground improvement technique.
