What is Software Piracy?

In comparison to literature, music, andmovies, computer software is a new formof intellectual property. However the same

laws govern computer software, andstealing this property is no different thanstealing any other form of copyrighted

content, and the punishment for doing sois the same.




A single individualcan commit hundredsof acts of softwarepiracy everyday.

in internet systems andfilesharing programs, theease to access thesecopyrighted digital files iscontinuously easier, and

the risk of getting caughtis next to nothing(Moores, T. T., 2008 p.39).




Unfortunately, despite this reality, thereare many people who engage in softwarepiracy and whenever a piece of software

that is unlicensed is used, it deprivessoftware companies of their earnings. Thethousands of hours of time that are spentworking on programs by writers,

programmers, design artists and others,goes uncompensated.

How Does Software Piracy AffectMe?

The most obvious and direct impact wouldbe if you partake in software piracy, youput yourself at risk to corrupt files intended

to steal personal information or damageyour computer.




You are also at riskfor being caught foryour illegal activities

by either being turnedin by vigilanteindividuals or byinvestigations

targeting a specificpopular program.




Even if you do not partake in softwarepiracy it has a direct impact on youbecause of the strain it puts on society.

The global economy alone losesapproximately 12 billion dollars a year onsoftware piracy which doesn’t include

other forms of stolen media such asmovies and music (Moores, T. T., 2008 p.39).




Naturally the repercussions of this dramaticfinancial loss would be a loss of jobs, increasedprices on legal software, flourishing illegalcopywriting organizations, uncompensated work

by talented individuals.This further impacts you as 80 percent of theworld’s software is produced in the U.S.

The issue brings the morals of society intoquestion as this type of crime is being sweptunder the rug.



How Can I Help?

The first step of action would includeeducating yourself further about the issue.

To do this there are numerousorganizations out there dedicated to theissue of Software piracy including theBSA, SIIA, RIAA and many others

including the corporations themselvessuch as Microsoft and Adobe.

These coalitions and companies will gladlyhelp in your education of software piracyas they all have atleast a section on their

sites dedicated to it, some even havehotlines.

They will inform you on how to pick outand diagnose illegal or unregisteredsoftware to keep yourself safe from itsdangers.

Another way to help, albeit it sounding cliché, isto raise awareness to others. Make sure yourfriends and family are not partaking in software

piracy and if they are inform them of the risks tothemselves and to society.

Any reasonable individual can identify softwarepiracy as theft if it is brought to their attention or

explained to them in a logical manner.

A final example of an easy wayto help would be to reportcases of software piracy orsuspicious looking programs tothe proper place.

The SIIA has a section inwhich you can fill out a piracyreport and be eligible for up to1 million dollars if yourinformation leads to abeneficial conclusion. Most
