Client Access Licences (CALs)

• gives user or device right to access service of a server

• Core CAL– Windows server CAL– Exchange server CAL– SMS CAL– Sharepoint Portal Server CAL


CALs

• user CALS vs device CALS– buy user CALs if fewer users than devices– buy device CALs if fewer devices than users

• one per user CAL covers any device used by that user (PC, PDA, Smartphone …)


Other options

• per processor licensing– may be cheaper than buying lots of CALs

• external connector– for e.g. students connecting to service– NOT for staff
