The ArtWorks Poetry Project Each year, ArtWorks stages poetry readings for elementary school students as part of the annual ArtWorks Poetry Project. This year eleven classes got to hear the poems of Luci Tapahonso.

Luci worked with ArtWorks three years ago and was great with the students. This year she read poems and told stories to two groups at the New Mexico History Museum Auditorium and at La Tienda in Eldorado. The students were soothed by her voice, deeply felt her stories, and wrote in response. A third grader from El Dorado said, “When she read her poems I felt really calm and focused on her. I felt like I was inside the poem.” Luci Tapahonso brought her role as first Poet Laureate of the Navajo Nation to our students with grace and music. A sixth grader from E.J. Martinez said she is a “legit Poet Laureate,” a high compliment indeed. I doubt they will forget this experience of poetry.

Several of the teachers again mentioned the phenomenon that poetry breaks open a creative joy, shows a surprising side of a student. In one class students asked if after they finished math, could they write another poem. It is yet another example of how the arts tune us into our best selves, and literacy can’t help but be a result. The teachers were heartened and encouraged their children with writing ideas of their own. The collaboration between teaching artist and teacher is such a rarity and the key to ArtWorks.

This book includes just a sample of the many fine poems written by participating Santa Fe Public School students. Thanks also to the other students whose work we couldn’t fit in these pages, for the poetry that will hopefully sing in all of our hearts.

The Blank Page is the SnowFor teachers Deborah Hawthorne and Eric Druva

By Joan Logghe, poet and ArtWorks teaching artist

The twelve childrenstill in school on a day of raging snowknow the words simile, alliteration, onomatopoeia.Accumulates is my favorite verb. Their teacherwears suspenders and a tie. His hair slick as black ice. It’s Black and White day at school.Meanwhile incessant, flashing veils of snow,

out the window. Each child knows something they didn’t know they knew. The silenceof writing is like snow. Both are rare in school. The art teacher falls in love with the moment. The morning is long as empty playground hours. The boy says his grandmother is a clock. The snowis old, it is Navajo snow, Sangre de Cristos are gone

in snow. The loudspeaker breaks in. Early dismissal. No basketball, no cheerleaders, no this, no that.Pretty soon everyone is speaking in poetry. They draw in black on white, like a magpie on chain link. The art teacher finds a magpie online, dressed formally.I pilfer language, gather bits and specks, as it accumulates from our brilliant snow-blown minds.

Snow Walk

By Brayan Arras

As I walk along the snow I canHear my boots making crunching noisesAnd the empty sound of snow fallingTo the floor makes me feel enlightenedBeing hit by the snowy blizzard asCold as can be.

Along my walk I can feel snowTurning to water as it hits my faceAnd then fade, my walk in the

snow isImperishable.

The Present Gift

By Bishop Elisoff

Staying still, I wait for the papersto come. So I can write a poem. The papers fall with a slightwhoosh sound. I think of what to write. As I look everyone’s atwork. Writing memories. I decide that what we need is a newidea. I decide to write about mewriting a poem. Writing aboutsomething that happened secondsago. I feel the warmth of the wordswiggling out of my pencil.I ask my friend what he’s writing about, thinking about mydecision.

Mysterious Future

By Iian Longsoldier

I sit here thinking of what the future holds. It still remains a mystery. What will happen that hasn’t already

happened?I hear the wind and hope to hear

what it says. Will it tell the future or the past?I sit here thinking more to find out

what’s in store.I listen and listen, more and more, I

want to find out.I want to know so I listen.I find that the future is now.So I don’t have to listen. I don’t

need to know.I already know and always will. Yet

isn’t thatjust the beginning?

Snowy Day

By Grace Elizabeth Northway

I looked out this morningI saw the snow fallingThe snow was clean and white It was very cold, colder than the airThe wind blew through the trees –

whooshAs the snow fell slowlyDancing through the morning airThe snow glistened in the light.

Prints from the animals that roamThe snow piles upI listen, I hear nothingThe snow falls quietlyIt doesn’t make a sound.I see the snow-capped mountainsI was dancing with joy at the sight.

ArtWorksArtWorks was started in 2001 by the City of Santa Fe Arts Commission when parents and educators approached the Arts Commission for help in providing quality arts programming to public elementary school children. Since 2001, ArtWorks has grown to serve 70 teachers and 2,000 students annually.

In 2010, ArtWorks became a program of the Partners in Education Foundation, a non-profit organization capable of guiding ArtWorks into its second decade and beyond. ArtWorks’ mission remains unchanged: to make the arts personally meaningful to public school students and teachers through an integrated program of arts-making, viewing live performances and exhibits and achieving understanding through inquiry and reflection.

Through ArtWorks, students enjoy special artist-led tours of museum exhibits and performances by Santa Fe’s world-class performing arts organizations. Classroom workshops led by Teaching Artists prepare students for these artistic field trips and provide students with opportunities to make their own art inspired by what they saw, heard or felt.

Through the generous support of donors, ArtWorks is now engaged in a strategic planning process to guide the growth of the program within the Santa Fe Public Schools for the coming years.

Blueberry Muffins

As the white fox runs across the yard

my dad yells come on sontime to go to the schoolhouse. As I slide out of the rusty pickup, Itrudge toward the wooden doors

withquaint woodpecker holes in the

cedar. Squash, I slap sluggishly at a bug on my face.

I smellfresh muffins coming from the coal

stove in the classroom. Chunk, the teacher

throws another logon the fire. Oh, a snowy day.

Memories

By Yasmine Sanchez

As I awoke this morning, I got up and looked out the window. I saw a white soft blanket of snow. It was cold and I was shivering. But it made me remember the snowy days in Española when the trees were covered with a white blanket and the roads and mountains were quiet and peaceful. When my sister and I ran across the white soft blanket of snow and all you could smell was the freshness of snow.

ArtWorks and the Common Core StandardsIn 2012 when Santa Fe Public Schools adopted the Common Core State Standards, we knew that ArtWorks could help with their implementation. Common Core asks teachers to design learning activities that allow for a deeper understanding of concepts and the development of higher thinking skills—that’s exactly what Artworks does. In this new school climate, ArtWorks Teaching Artists and teachers are working even more effectively than in the past to design lesson plans that stimulate curiosity and imagination, and build the rich vocabularies and extended thinking skills required by the Common Core and today’s complex workplace environment.

Yes it Was My Friend

By Katelynn Rainey

Yes, it was my friend who taught me how to fish. We throw our lines in the water and make a wish.

We wait for wandering fish to swim by.

We wait with great patience by the rocky lake shore.

Full of fish free ferocious predators. There’s a sudden tap on the line, which means a fish is near by.

I grab the pole and start to sigh. My friend is patient, and tells me to reel in the line until the fish is out high.

I Remember

By Zachariah Cordova

I remember when my uncle made cookies for Christmas. The cookies were chocolate chip and chewy, which is my favorite. I wish he made theseevery day for me to share with my family. They smelled great and had rich flavor that felt everlasting.Everyone liked them. They were gone, quick, in less than one hour.

Southern Family Food

By Brady Petty

My grandma is like a gymnast in the kitchen. She’s always swinging around the kitchen. One minute she is stirring, and another she is sifting through the spices. ‘Down in the South’ spices are the key to every meal. She gets the stove burning and plops the mixture in a pot. There’s steam everywhere. It’s like a construction site. Then she chops at the chicken and sausage. Everything is in the pot. As it cooks the whole family licks their lips. She announces the food is ready. We rush to the kitchenfor our steaming hot gumbo. It’s spicy and it has lots of love. After we all eat, it’s time for pecan pie.

The first day I came,So frightened, and scared,Wanting to stay with my mother,The first day of school was scaryAt first.

But once you enterYou see your old childhood friends,Your teacher says “hi” in a sweet

warm voice,You never want to leave.

You turn around and push your mother out the door

You say, “Go away, it’s time for me to play.”

Your mother smiles and says, “Okay.”

The classroom has a kitchen area A block areaA nap areaAnd tables to sit atBut when it’s time to goYou don’t want to goYou say, “No.”

Yes, it Was My Mother

By Jayden Howley

Nava Elementary SchoolTeacher: Bill Rodriguez, 5th grade

Yes, it was my mother who taught me how to read. Mom sitting, and asking, “D-O-G? Dog.”

Walking and reading road signs, when we see a rusty, metal sign that says “Construction Ahead”. Then Mom asks what C-O-N-S-T-R-U-C-T-I-O-N spelled.

Confused, concentrating, challenging choice of question.

Page 21: Soft, but Boldartworkssantafe.org/.../2015/06/2015-poetry-book-lo-res.pdfArtWorks Poetry Anthology 2014-2015 Soft, but Bold Friends Anonymous Charmay Allred Katharine Atterbury Bill

I thought for a moment, then said “Con-struck-teon.”

I shook my head, and thought how I pronounced the word sounded false and odd.

I thought some more, then shouted out “Construction”!!!

Later seeing a wooden sign that said “ice cream” proud mother taking daughter out for ice cream after teaching life lesson.

ArtWorks At NavaIn 2011 Nava Elementary School invited ArtWorks to launch its first school-wide, implementation. For years we have been collecting information from teachers that demonstrates how powerful the program is, but we hadn’t had the opportunity to work with the same students in consecutive years to prove the long-term impact.

Fortunately, funders understood the value of a school-wide program and provided the necessary support for program evaluation that would provide statistical information on whether or not ArtWorks helped students succeed in school. Partners contracted with the University of New Mexico to design and conduct just such an in-depth evaluation. The UNM results indicate what teachers have been reporting for years—ArtWorks makes school more interesting and helps students succeed academically. The ArtWorks methodology allows students to discover personal connections to their school work, and it is these personal connections that draw students into the lessons and inspire creativity, curiosity, and a life-long interest in learning.

Training TeachersThe public school teachers trained in the ArtWorks experiential teaching methodology not only use it when partnering with ArtWorks’ Teaching Artists, but also in their daily lesson planning. The ArtWorks methodology is adapted from Lincoln Center Institute in New York City. It uses inquiry—open-ended questioning similar to that used in scientific investigation; reflection—an activity that allows for a deeper, nuanced understanding of ideas; and art-making—drawing, writing, dancing, acting, singing, composing or a combination of activities that allow a child’s imagination and curiosity to awaken.

ArtWorks’ teacher trainings are intensive, week-long summer institutes and professional development workshops held during the school year. Teacher trainings are augmented by the support of colleagues who are veteran ArtWorks teachers and who act as mentors to teachers new to ArtWorks’ methodology.

ArtWorks Teaching Artist Faculty

ArtWorks’ greatest asset is its faculty of Teaching Artists. Led by Artistic Advisor Oliver Prezant, ArtWorks Teaching Artists include actors, dancers, poets, musicians and visual artists. All have been trained in ArtWorks’ experiential teaching methodology and all have extensive experience working with elementary school children.

As working artists, the Teaching Artists bring fresh energy and enthusiasm to classrooms. Students are excited to work with ‘real’ artists, and teachers enjoy the role reversal as they participate in TA-led workshops as if they were students. Observing the class from this perspective gives teachers new insights into how to reach and inspire their students, especially those they may have struggled to connect with earlier in the year.
