Statement of ,roblem

-n(estigation of field hoc2ey and how it im,acts the members of the 3amaica Hoc2ey

ederation.

Aims

o To in(estigate the academic res lts of each st dent a,art of the 3amaica Hoc2eyederation.

o To find o t if games ,lanned by the 3amaica Hoc2ey ederation interr ,t school.o To in(estigate if any e0tra4c rric lar acti(ity is beneficial/ in any way.o To find o t if doing an e0tra4c rric lar acti(ity has more of a ,ositi(e im,act than

a negati(e on its ,artici,ants.

%b'ecti(es

o -t can find o t the benefits of doing an 50tra4C rric lar acti(ity.o To show that ha(ing an 50tra4C rric lar acti(ity can be related to certain as,ects

of life.o To show that thro gh the de(elo, ment of 50tra4C rric lar acti(ities the rewards

will show later than now.o To find o t if it sho ld be mandatory for st dents to ,artici, ate in an e0tra4

C rric lar acti(ity.

The Organization

The 3amaica Hoc2ey ederation 63H 7 was formed on 3an ary 8!/ !99#/ thro gh the

amalgamation of the 3amaica Men s Hoc2ey Association and the 3amaica omen s Hoc2ey

Page 6: Sociology IA Complete

Association. The 3H is a member of the international go(erning body of hoc2ey/ the ederation

-nternational de Hoc2ey 6 -H7/ the regional body/ the $an American Hoc2ey ederation 6$AH 7 /

and locally/ the 3amaica %lym,ic Association 63%A7. This brings s to the management and

organi<ation of hoc2ey in 3amaica in conformity with international re= irements that there be a

single national association res, onsible for the de(elo, ment and reg lation of the s,ort in each

co ntry.

The 3H has its head= arters at Mona/ and has recently installed a state4 of the art/

international all weather artificial ,laying field which now allows for the de(elo, ment of ,layers

and the s,ort to world class standards.

The facility also allows the 3H to host ma'or international com,etitions/ and already the

-H and $AH ha(e identified 3amaica as being an ideal geogra, hic location for this.

M-SS-%N STAT5M5NT

To foster/ enco rage/ de(elo,/ administer and ,lay the game of hoc2ey locally/ regionally andinternationally/ at the highest international and ,rofessional le(el

The definition of e0tra4c rric lar acti(ity is gi(en to s by Simeroth 6!9#>7 which stated that

e0tra4c rric lar acti(ities are s,onsored acti(ities o tside the reg lar school ho rs and not ,art of

the official school ed cational ,rogram. This incl des s,orts/ cl bs/ and organised st dent

committee. Howe(er he ta2es this a bit f rther and says that by r nning these acti(ities/ schools

,ro(ide the chance to ,artici, ation acti(ities that infl ence ,ersonality de(elo, ment and

sociali<ation. Steigberg !9##/ s ggested that ,artici,ation in e0tra4c rric lar acti(ities was more

li2ely to enhance than interfere with high school st dents academic as,iration and achie(ement.

Page 7: Sociology IA Complete

7/23/2019 Sociology IA Complete

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/sociology-ia-complete 7/29

According to elt< and eiss 6!9#?7/ st dents who ,artici, ated the most in e0tra4

c rric lar acti(ities were better able to manage their time and achie(e higher le(els of

,erformance in se(eral different roles sim ltaneo sly. This ability to de(elo, time management

s2ills hel,s the indi(id al not only in school b t also in the world of wor2. This is so/ as Han2s/

5chland 6!9>@7 said that ,artici, ation in e0tra4c rric lar acti(ities is also considerable by

em,loyers and selecti(e colleges to be e(idence of social ad' stment and being well4ro ndedB.

This s ggests that it is ,ossible to get a 'ob or be acce, ted into a college d e to the fact that the

indi(id al has ,artici,ated in a e0tra4c rric lar acti(ity. Howe(er for a st dent to ,artici,ate in

an e0tra4c rric lar acti(ity there has to be some desire/ whether internal or e0ternal/ to 'oin/ thisis beca se the acti(ities are abo t the st dent. Miller et al 6!9 @7 commented that e0tra4

c rric lar are st dent4centredB/ in that st dents tend to select the acti(ities in which they want to

,artici,ate/ and to ass me m ch of the res, onsibility for ,lanning and carrying o t these

acti(ities. -f the indi(id al wants to ,lay a s,ort/ e.g. ield hoc2ey/ the indi(id al has to ha(e

some amo nt of interest and li2e for the acti(ity to 'oin it first off/ and then contin e and dedicate

time and effort into it after.

he Research !esi"n

The research of in(estigating how field hoc2ey im,acts the members of the 3amaica

Hoc2ey ederation 63H 7 was cond cted at the Mona Astros4T rf located at @ Mona *oad/

Kingston >/ $% 1o0 !! / 3amaica.

This research is one of a D antitati(e ty,e which will ,rod ce statistical data abo t the

thesis statement. This research is D antitati(e beca se according to + r2heim the analysis of

statistical data can indicate correlation as well as ca se. D alitati(e research method was also

chosen beca se the st dy is easily re,licable; it is efficient as it sa(e time and money. -t also

allows for standard data to be collected and is easy to = antify the data collected. ith the se of

large sam,les to enhance (alidity along with ,ro(iding ob'ecti(e data D antitati(e *esearch is

the best choice.

This research ,ro'ect was cond cted in the month of No(ember on the !" th day in the year

E"!!. %n the !E th of the same month/ the = estionnaires which were to be distrib ted to the

members of the 3amaica Hoc2ey ederation at their ann al n at the T rf was ,roof read by -

res, ectable member and was criti= ed. This ,re(ented the = estionnaires from being distrib ted.

-nstead on the following day/ the !8 th/ the = estionnaires were redone and distrib ted as ,lan. 1y

the end of the day all = estionnaires were com, leted. %n accom, anying this f rther research was

cond cted and the writing ,rocess of the act al re,ort beg n on the E@ th of No(ember. This

writing ,rocess was done in stages howe(er. This writing ,rocess was done in stages howe(er.

The main limitation which was e0,erienced d ring this research was e0,erienced with

the = estionnaire. This was done incorrect the first time as there were no o,en4end = estions/ and

the choices which were gi(en were too limited. This cost the research the wastage of in2 on

,rinting E" sheets of incorrect = estionnaires and the wasting of those E" ,ages of ,a,er. This

limited my research by c tting down on the (ariety of the research as a few Al,ha yo ng ladies

did not ret rn when the new and renewed = estionnaires were done. Howe(er there were other

,eo,le there to combat this lost and were easily re,laced witho t ca sing too m ch damage. As

mentioned before in ,re(io s writings the instr ment that was sed to cond ct this research was

mainly D estionnaire and inter(iews in a minority

The Sam,le Method sed in this research ,ro'ect is a $ r,osi(e Sam,ling method.

Sample

The Stratified *andom sam, ling method of this research was chosen on the basis that the

indi(id als that were chosen had to answer the = estions which were on the = estionnaire/ which

allowed them to be rele(ant to the s b'ect being st died. This ty,e of sam, ling was chosen

beca se the s b'ect matter was only for a s,ecific gro , of ,eo,le who are small in n mber. The

organi<ation is a (ery small one in com,arison to other s,orts. This sa,ling method is $ r,osi(e

Sam,ling/ and e(en tho gh it is o,en to s b'ecti(e o,inion it had to be done as no one else was

there to chose another sam,le to which co ld be a,,lied.

-n this Sam,ling of the ,o, lation it only incl ded members of the 3amaica Hoc2ey

ederation. The sam, ling incl ded E" indi(id als. There were # male and !E female in this

or tertiary instit tion. These secondary schools incl ded St. Andrew High School for Girls/

50celsior High School and $a,ine High School. There were also female indi(id als who

attended tertiary instit tions incl ding the Fni(ersity of Technology and The Fni(ersity of the

est -ndies/ 3amaica. The males/ there were three age gro ,s which had E members in it. This

!ata #ollection Instrument

The +ata Collection method sed in this research ,ro'ect was a D estionnaire for the

main collection of data with minor inter(iews of disting ished coach and also a ,sychologist.

These inter(iews are ' st sed to ma2e ,oints in the research from a credible so rce to ta2e home

the disc ssions.

A D estionnaire is a n mber of ,reset standard = estions that can contain o,en4ended

= estions as well as close4ended = estions/ which is designed to gather statistical information.

The = estionnaire was the main method of collecting the data is beca se they are easily

administered along with allowing for a large n mber of ,eo,le to be reached. The = estionnaire

also allows for time to be sa(ed as a large sam, ling gro , has to be reached. The main reason for

the se of a = estionnaire was mainly beca se the data collected can easily be tab lated/

meas red and analy<ed.

This statistics show that e(en with intense training as many members train at least 8 times

Page 22: Sociology IA Complete

7/23/2019 Sociology IA Complete

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/sociology-ia-complete 22/29

This statistical data also ,oints to answer the ne0t aim as stated abo(e as if these are the

res lts of the st dents in their e0ternal e0aminations then there is no interference by school

games or training to a f rther e0tent. Not ill strated in the research ,ro'ect/ the members were

as2ed in = estion 9/ if school games interfered with st dies/ and it was fo nd that >"I or !? of

the members stated that this did not ha,,en. This again also ,ro(es that Steiberg/ !9## was right

again abo t s,orts enhancing academic achie(ement.

The gra,h ill strating the C C grades attain also show that > I of the entire sam, ling

gro , got >49 s b'ects which are mostly grades ! and E with a few 8 s for these ,assed s b'ects.

elt< J eiss/ !9#? also said that e0tra4c rric lar acti(ities better able&higher achie(ed le(els

of ,erformanceB. This again ,ro(es that it is beneficial to ,artici, ate in an e0tra4c rric lar

acti(ity. This also is not im,acted by the fact that members do not get the minim m re= ired

amo nt of slee, and a few who gets a minim m of ho rs with a ,ossible ma0im m of # ho rs.

They may e(ent ally catch , some of the slee, which is lost on wee2ends and on holiday

brea2s.

+oing an e0tra4c rric lar acti(ity does not only benefit the members of the acti(ity

academically/ b t it also teaches them the ,rinci,les of team wor2/ res,onsibility/ time

management and s,ortsmanshi,. Teaching Team or2 is an im,ortant ,rinci,le ta ght as

e(erywhere in life/ es,ecially in the wor2ing world/ the indi(id al will need to be able to wor2

and co4o,erate with their team to be ,rod cti(e. This team may be a team of ,eo,le to ,rod ce a

,resentation or it may be the team of the entire wor2ing office to daily ,rod ce wor2 for whoe(er

needs it. This is shown in the gra,h with > I of the members learning this. Time Management is

also an im,ortant ,rinci,le ta ght by e0tra4c rric lar acti(ities as with doing school wor2 and

these e0tra acti(ities will need a balance between them and time management teaches this. -t

Page 23: Sociology IA Complete

7/23/2019 Sociology IA Complete

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/sociology-ia-complete 23/29

teaches the indi(id al to di(ide their time efficiently among each acti(ity so as to be able to

m ltitas2 and be able to be ,rod cti(e in each as,ect of their acti(ities. This is shown on the

gra,h with @"I of the members learning this. Ms. Marie *eynolds from amily )ife Ministries

agrees that ,ro,er Time Management can be beneficial to the indi(id al as it allows for s ccess

as there is a balancing of e(erything that the ,erson is doing.

The members are also ta ght the ,rinci, les of S,ortsmanshi, and *es,onsibility.

S,ortsmanshi, teaches the ,erson to be com, etiti(e to want to win and become s ccessf l in a

com, etition. This lesson of com, etiti(eness allows the indi(id al to com,ete to be the best in

life and the best in what they do as a ,erson. Com,etition is in e(eryday life es,ecially in the

wor2 world and also in a,,lying for tertiary ed cation. They may com,ete to get a ,romotion in

the office or organisation and they may ha(e to com,ete to get acce, ted into a tertiary instit tion

by getting the highest grades. S,ortsmanshi, also teaches the indi(id al how to lose and acce,t

defeat as not e(erything in life they will be s ccessf l. According to Miller et al/ !9 @ says that

doing an e0tra4c rric lar acti(ity allows indi(id als to ass me m ch res, onsibility for these

acti(ities. These res, onsibilities may incl ding starting the acti(ity on time/ finding o t where

the coach of cl b s ,er(isor is/ assisting the ad lts in charge as well as other things which need

to be done to ens re the effecti(e r nning of the e0tra4c rric lar acti(ity.

-n regards to Han2s/ 5c2land/ !9>@ says that with the acti(e ,artici,ation of e0tra4

c rric lar acti(ities/ em,loyers and selecti(e colleges will acce,t yo based on the fact that yo

do an e0tra acti(ity d ring yo r school or ,ersonal life. This is beca se with doing these

acti(ities/ yo ha(e become a well4ro ndedB indi(id al/ which - who these ,ersons want in their

organisations and instit tions. This is one of the additi(e benefits with doing an e0tra4c rric lar

acti(ity. There are other benefits of doing e0tra4c rric lar acti(ities.

1ased on my findings/ as the researcher/ there is nothing to be changed as ield Hoc2ey

has a ,ositi(e im,act on its members of the 3amaica Hoc2ey ederation as the members are

,rod cing good grades and are learning ,ositi(e ,rinci,les/ which are life lessons/ which will

create the well4ro ndedB indi(id al that Han2s/ 5c2land s,ea2s abo t.

The only things that - recommend to be changed are that there be contin e of im,ro(ing

the wor2ing team which incl de m,ires and coaches to ma2e the s,ort better. There also sho ld

be some time and money being , m,ed into the acti(ity to hel, endorse the s,ort so that other

,eo,le can e0,erience the ,ositi(e benefits which ield Hoc2ey can offer. -m,ro(ement sho ld

also be ,laced in the b ilding and maintenance of e= i,ment which is sed in training and

,laying the game. This incl des more balls/ stic2s/ ,rotection gear 6shin g ards/ mo th g ards7
