PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Don’t you just love this time of year? The days are already longer, the sun doesn’t yet have

the force that it does in the heart of the summer, but it’s starting to warm up very nicely. We also can’t help noticing that the number of social events on the Coast is stepping up too. We are already having a very good time and this will only get crazier as the year progresses.

In order to celebrate the arrival of spring we have a great April line-up for you. Our cover story is the continuing rise of Gwen Stefani, who has been in the news recently due partly to the break-up her marriage to Gavin Rossdale and subsequent relationship with country music star, Blake Shelton and partly because her new album, This Is What The Truth Feels Like, has sold strongly. Stefani’s ska-punk image has always gone down well in Europe, from her time in No Doubt to her solo work, so everything she does creates more than a bit of interest in this part of the world.

This year’s Academy Awards were recently dished out, but how much do you know about the Oscars? We have 12 amazing facts about these movie gongs to help you to test your knowledge and, on top of this, Jonathan Yeadon, our hairdressing expert, reviews the red carpet styles. Who had a prize-winning hairdo – and who had a hair-don’t? Jonathan has run his pitiless eye over the stars and the sinners and who knows maybe he will give you ladies some inspiration for the forthcoming summer party season?

Talking about getting ready for summer, why don’t you have a look at our fashion features? Those clever people at Sisko Akt have some excellent suggestions to help you improve your image, while this month’s

fashion shoot showcases springtime casual wear from Elle Morgan. Our guest fitness guru, Rob Edmond, is the man to see if you want to achieve that bikini or Speedo shape in time for the opening of the Coast’s many beach clubs. We all know that there’s no gain without pain, but Rob is a true expert in his field. He has employed his SAS training to help civilians to shed fat and build muscle so if you feel that you can’t afford the services of a personal trainer, he has plenty of advice that should help you to strut your stuff poolside this summer.

If your health plan includes renewing your vow to stop smoking, then we also have some excellent advice from Dr. José Joaquín Cebrián Gallardo of HC Marbella. Breaking the habit of nicotine addiction is never easy, but Dr. José has some helpful advice as to how you can help improve your lung function and mobility.

It looks as though Kimberley Mills Bentley has had a busy time lately; we asked her to give us her Top Ten of things that have been occupying her lately and she didn’t disappoint us. From interior design to golf lessons from Michael Campbell and skiing in the Sierra Nevada, she has managed to define what makes up the good life in Southern Spain.

On top of this, Padre Peter takes a look at the Strait of Gibraltar and its historical strategic importance, while Ian Kuah test drives the new strictly limited edition Pagani Huayra BC. Would we love one as the company car? Of course we would, but with a price tag of 2.35€ million – hmm...maybe that’s one idea that will have to wait for a while!

Til next time...

Celebrity Spotlight

Gwen Stefani

W ith a marriage considered to be the strongest in the notoriously fickle music

business world, Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale were popular tabloid fodder, although for some years this attention largely revolved around their seemingly perfect life, international jet-setting and beautiful children. However, in 2015 the couple attracted the full force of the red-top paparazzi when Stefani filed for divorce, citing that old chestnut of ‘irreconcilable differences’. It was rumoured that Rossdale had irrevocably fouled the marital nest by having a steamy affair with the children’s nanny, Mindy Mann, but more recently Stefani teased the press with hints that there was even more to it than that: “If I could I would just tell you everything, and you would just be in shock. It’s a really good, juicy story.”

Still, this is Gwen Stefani talking; a woman with all the promotional nous of a young Madonna and a rare talent for creating a sound and a look that immediately grabs the attention. When cast as Jean Harlow in The Aviator, Martin Scorsese’s 2004 biopic of Howard Hughes, her platinum blonde hair and stellar swagger perfectly encapsulated the glory days of Hollywood, yet in her early incarnation as the vocalist with No Doubt, she was the embodiment of street smart.

So, who is she? Born Gwen Renée Stefani in Fullerton California on October the 3rd 1969, she was catapulted to fame when her brother Eric invited her to be the vocalist for a band that he was forming. Having already introduced

the young Gwen to ska via the albums of British 2-Tone bands like The Selector and Madness, she was only too eager to comply, later saying that she found inspiration for her stage persona from the combined sexiness and toughness of Blondie’s Debbie Harry who, like Stefani, was the only woman in the band. The group, now officially named No Doubt, enjoyed moderate success but, after their third album, Tragic Kingdom, became a huge seller largely thanks to its big hit, ‘Don’t Speak’, Stefani and bandmates, bassist and keyboard player Tony Kanal, guitarist Tom Dumont and drummer Adrian Young found themselves in demand internationally. By this time a considerable amount of water had passed under the bridge – Eric Stefani had left the band in 1993 to focus on a career in animation, later working on The Simpsons and Gwen and Tony Kanal’s seven-year relationship had tanked. Fortuitously this situation had led directly to the composition of ‘Don’t Speak’ and enormous global success, an irony of which Kanal and Stefani were only too aware, since this musical account of their break-up saved the band, in the opinion of many. No Doubt remained the main focus of Stefani’s ambitions until 2004 when she cut away, temporarily, to launch a solo career. Love. Angel. Music. Baby was a huge success, the album selling strongly and its first single, ‘What You Waiting For?’ quickly becoming an international hit.

By this time Stefani had married Gavin Rossdale, guitarist and lead vocalist with British band, Bush. No Doubt had provided support for Bush on their 1995 tour and it seemed that both had been thrown together by long, boring hours spent on the tour bus and backstage. The couple would eventually marry in 2002, go on to have three children together and, ultimately, provide the scandal sheets with a regular supply

She might have been in the news recently for all the wrong reasons, but you would have to be a brave person to bet against Gwen Stefani coming back even stronger than before. From her days with ska-punk band No Doubt, to her successful solo career, she has shown that she has what it takes to stay the course.

“My songs are basically my diaries.

Some of my best songwriting has

come out of times when I’ve been going through a

personal nightmare.”

of lovely images: “Oh, look – there’s Gwen and Gavin going through passport control at LAX!” “Here they are, out for a walk in the sun with a baby buggy!” However, the couple would later learn that the tabloids are a double-edged sword as Rossdale’s two-year relationship with singer ‘Marilyn’ (aka Peter Robinson), his acknowledgement that he had had a child with Pearl Lowe and, later, rumours that all was not well with his marriage to Stefani, proved popular page-fillers.

In the meantime Stefani has cracked on with a glittering solo career, a few well-judged forays into acting, her clothing line and a collaboration with make-up brand, Urban Decay, ensuring that she is constantly in the public eye. Despite claiming that her divorce left her feeling

“dead”, Stefani continues to make wise professional choices, agreeing to be a judge on the American version of The Voice and creating a few waves after her on-screen flirting with fellow judge and country music artist, Blake Shelton, started to attract press attention. Eventually the pair decided to put the gossip manufacturers out of their misery and admitted that they were, indeed, seeing each other socially. If Stefani

really had been floored by the demise of her marriage, then she certainly wasted no time in getting back on her feet.

Her 2016 album, This Is What The Truth Feels Like, betrayed no loss of confidence either, which was no less than fans expected from the woman who had music fans asking, “What is a hollaback girl anyway?” Stefani’s third hit single, written in collaboration with Pharrell Williams, apparently referred to women who responded positively to catcalls from male admirers, but the lyric, “I ain’t no hollaback girl” suggested that Stefani had no intention of allowing anyone else to define her.

Her fans have no idea what she will do next, but there is no doubt that it will be interesting.

The Entertainment Charts

It’s Showtime, Folks!

We all love Academy Award Season and always try to identify the winners ahead of the ceremony. We did well this year and feel quite proud of ourselves (mind you, who but Leo was likely to win the Best

Actor statuette?) but, now that the red carpet has been rolled up for another year and the diamonds returned to the sponsors, did you know these 12 fascinating Oscar facts?

Jack Nicholson, a big favourite round here, is the most honoured male actor so far, with 12 nominations and three Oscar wins to his name.

Only five actors have managed to win consecutive Oscars: they are :

Tom Hanks, Spencer Tracy, Luise Rainer, Katharine Hepburn, & Jason Robards.Three directors have won

back-to-back Oscars. They were John Ford (for The Grapes of Wrath and How Green Was My Valley in the early 1940s), Joseph Mankiewicz for People Will Talk and All About Eve in the early 1950s and Alejandro G. Iñárritu in 2015 and 2016 for Birdman and The Revenant.

In 1941, when winning his Best Screenplay Oscar for Citizen Kane, the unpopularity of the film was such that Orson Welles was booed. Since then, it has been frequently appeared at the top of just about every Best Films of All Time list you care to mention.

The stauettes comprise five different metals, namely britannium (a pewter alloy), copper, nickel, silver and gold. The total worth of the ingredients is slightly less than $1,000, but add a famous celeb to the mixture and that can only increase.

Corporations wanting to air a 30-second advertisement during the TV broadcast of the 2016 ceremony would have had to stump up a massive ....

$1.9 million. Now, that’s really expensive!

The Entertainment Charts

The Entertainment Charts

Space opera, The Martian was the big box office winner of the eight nominees for Best Picture this

year, having taken a whacking $226,486,935 compared to Mad Max: Fury Road’s comparatively paltry

$153,629,485, which left it trailing in second place.

It seems that 2016 was a really great for

NEW TALENT. No fewer than EIGHT acting nominees received their first recognition: step forward Bryan Cranston, Brie Larson, Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Alicia Vikander, Rachel McAdams and Charlotte Rampling.

Timing is everything it seems; it’s an Academy Award truism that movies released close to the cut-off date are more likely to win big. Well, get this – 2016 was the first year since 2003 that there were NO ACTING NOMINEES FROM MOVIES RELEASED BEFORE SEPTEMBER. It seems that the early bird doesn’t have a hope of catching the worm in Tinseltown.

Steven Spielberg holds the record for most films nominated by a single director, clocking up an astounding 128 nods over the years. This year Bridge of Spies alone clocked up a healthy six nominations.

The Red Carpet alone cost roughly

$30,000! to install.

Even after the last Oscar has been handed out the money keeps flowing like champagne, while the champagne keeps flowing like, er...money? The after-parties are typically fabulous events, with the

Vanity Fair team charging an eye-watering $120,000 per pair for entry to theirs. Sir Elton

John’s – which is also a famous post-Academy Award tradition - is a comparatively cheap date, setting big-spending couples back a paltry $12,900 for entry to his Oscar Viewing Event and After Party. We really need to hone our gatecrashing skills ready for next year’s shindigs!

Back To MoscowGuillermo EradesA sharply observed debut novel by Málaga author Guillermo Erades, Back to Moscow is original, witty, dazzling and ultimately haunting. Months after his arrival in Moscow, doctoral student Martin hasn’t written a word of his thesis on the heroines of the Russian classics because, for him and his expat friends, the cheap, bright lure of nightclubs, vodka and real women is predictably hard to resist. It’s the early 2000s and the city is storming into the twenty-first century - the grim old Soviet certainties are fading as money and an assertive political elite rise to power. Martin finds himself torn between opposing sensibilities: on the one hand, the limpid appeal of Lena, and her insistence on the Mysterious Russian Soul; on the other, that of his research supervisor Lyudmila Aleksandrovna, diligent, serious, caught in the shadow of a Soviet past. Can the fates of Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, Pushkin’s Tatyana or Chekhov’s three sisters help him understand the women in his life?

Cometh The Hour (Clifton Chronicles 6)Jeffrey Archer

Although this is the sixth book in the Clifton Chronicles series, it can just as easily be enjoyed as a stand-alone novel. The reader soon becomes caught up in the intrigue of politics, international espionage and the internal wrangling of big business. There is a great balance of romance with Giles and the woman he loves behind the Iron Curtain and Sebastian, who falls in love with an Indian girl. In contrast to this is Lady Virginia, who moves from one financial crisis to another, relying on

her father to bail her out. Her salvation would seem to be Cyrus T. Grant - but for how long? The attempts by Adrian and Desmond to take over Farthings bank by bringing about the downfall of Sebastian and Bashira ramp up the tension. To what lengths will they go in order to succeed?

Lukas Graham - 7 Years Old (Pop)A brilliantly catchy song made by a band from our home country Denmark. It’s great to hear talented artists coming out of our small country.

Sam Smith - Lay Me Down (Flume Remix) (Experimental)Flume does it again with his typically unusual flow and unpredictable style. Great song if you aren’t a musical perfectionist.

Day wave - You (Indie)We’re big fans of Day Wave! Even though his songs all have a similar style and tempo, there is something fresh about them. This is a great track for Spring.

Electric Mantis - Daybreak (Experimental)This song might sound simple to some people, but a clued up producer will hear the sheer amount of detail in this production. Really smooth, chilled vibe.

Hi! This month I have been a busy bee, with the kiddies off school for the Andalusian holiday, so it’s been a lot of play-dates for Mummy! It’s quite hard sometimes to try to fit in work-outs and healthy eating plans when you have the little ones running around, so I have been trying to find ways to incorporate active living while keeping them entertained.

02. Michael CampbellI was very excited to be able to have

a golf lesson with the charming Michael Campbell this month at his new new golf academy in the Villa Padierna Golf Resort. The facilities were top drawer, with a beautiful, manicured driving range, an indoor area to practise your swing (and to shelter from the sun or rain) and a perfectly formed putting green. I was a little nervous about showing my swing to a professional (a US Open champion, no less), but he put me at ease straight away and it was as if I had known him for years. He gave me some excellent advice throughout the lesson and my swing had definitely improved by the end. I can’t rate Michael highly enough; for someone who has played golf his whole life and has had such a successful career, he made me feel welcome, relaxed and, by the end, quite confident in my ability. He even said that I had some talent, which made me feel over the moon. What better compliment could anyone receive from a golfing pro? I am looking forward to my next lesson and, who knows, maybe I’ll be on the next UK ladies’ tour. Well, I can dream, can’t I?

03. Tarifa We have been been exploring the beautiful coastline and finding new beaches along the way. There are some wonderful spots, with caves and coves and pure white sands, which I never knew existed. Nothing beats getting out in the fresh air and letting the kids go wild - it clears our minds and keeps them happy! Our favourite beach was Playa Bolonia, just north of Tarifa, about an hour’s drive past Gibraltar. It was breathtaking; unspoiled, peaceful, relaxed and cool. Tarifa is an amazing town with an authentic hippy vibe, full of surf shops and little bistros. It has a great atmosphere too - very relaxed and welcoming. We took the opportunity to take a boat out to sea for a spot of whale watching and were lucky enough to see a sperm whale which was spectacular and, given the time of year, a real treat. The kids loved it and so did we.

04 Halo “For every Angel needs a HALO”. I’m so excited to be in the process of designing and creating a gym wear range for women to help raise awareness and money for Ciudad de Los Niños, the children’s orphanage in Málaga. They do great work, looking after many children from tots to teens who have experienced all manners of abuse, providing them with a safe haven and an education. Having young children myself, this charity really holds a special place in my heart and hopefully I can raise some funds, through positive awareness in sports and activities, to give a little back. As well as the gym wear line I’m also hoping to organise some fun fundraising days with salsa dance lessons, zumba classes on the beach and coast to coast walks. I would love everyone to come down and get involved. All the proceeds will go directly to the charity LIVE which looks after the orphanage and does such great work. Ciudad de Los Niños already has some great contributors including Costa Jump and Tivoli World, but this is my way of trying to give something back to these beautiful children of Málaga. There will be five sets in the collection, with different styles and colours and will be available {just waiting to confirm this but golden tarts said they would do it }

from Golden Tarts salon in Puerto Banús from April. I chose the name HALO as it stands for Help Aid Local Orphanage and this is exactly what I hope to do. I’m a firm believer that these children (as corny as it sounds) are our future and deserve the best start in life. They need to be protected, looked after and shown that there are people out there who care. They are pure souls and truly are angels who walk this earth. I hope everyone will get behind me, become an angel and buy a HALO.

We decided to take a trip up to the Sierra Nevada

to make the most of the snow. I still find it crazy that you can be on the on the beach in the morning and, a few hours later, in a winter wonderland. It’s only a few hours drive away, but feels like you are in another world and I feel so lucky so be able to have the best of both. It was my little girl’s first time skiing and she absolutely loved it. I took her up myself, which was a challenge to say the least, but I loved every minute and, let’s just say, the experience was one to remember. The little village has everything you could want for a weekend’s skiing - great slopes, restaurants, bars, hotels and kids’ clubs. We stayed at the Melia which is right in the middle of the village; I made good use of the gorgeous spa (while Daddy looked after the kiddies) and it was just what I needed after a day of skiing. We are going back at the end of the month and hoping to stay at the new El Lodge, which has recently been renovated and looks a dream. Perfect!

10.Food for thought “What if I fail? But, darling, what if you fly?” This has always been one of my favourite quotations. Sometimes you have to take risks and push yourself. There might always be people, situations or reasons to hold you back, but if you believe in yourself and are true to yourself you can achieve anything. If this is the only thing I manage to teach my kids, I’ll be a happy mummy.

08.Omega 3I’ve been trying to eat more fish as I know it is such a good source of Omega 3 and one of my favourite things is salmon teriyaki. I make it all the time, because it’s so quick and easy to prepare and cook. I just grill the salmon on my George Foreman grill for a few minutes, add some salt and pepper, dash on some teriyaki sauce and, Bob’s your uncle, it’s done. I like to have mine with some broccoli and green beans - healthy and delicious.

09. Yoga I have been trying to find new ways to exercise this month and have really fallen for yoga. My teacher, Michelle, comes to my house or we meet on the beach and practice yoga for about an hour. It’s such a lovely way to clear your mind while toning your whole body. There are some fabulous yoga studios in and around Marbella and an amazing yoga retreat, the Shanti Som, which is located within the Sierra de las Nieves Nature Park. It is a boutique hotel, spa and retreat with Oriental gardens and a beautiful swimming pool. There are yoga classes throughout the day for every level of expertise, from beginners to advanced and there are also lessons from guest teachers throughout the year. It really is a spiritual haven, beautifully designed with a calming atmosphere, a place where you can fully recharge your mind, body and soul, I am hoping to plan a girlie weekend away there very soon. Can’t wait!

05. Kangen WaterWe all know that water is good for us and I try to drink as much as I can but this month I’ve had a new Kangen water system fitted in my home. Basically it produces ionised alkaline and acidic water though electrolysis and it fits directly onto my main water supply. You may have heard of the alkaline diet? Well, this works in the same way. It has been proved that it is harder for diseases and infections to survive in an alkaline body so by drinking the Kangen water you are making your body more alkaline on the pH scale and, by so doing, increasing your chances of being healthier. You can use the acid water for household cleaning (it works wonders on my windows, for instance!) but there are many types of hidden toxins in bottled and tap water, which you may never know are there. By filtering it and converting it to an alkaline balance you are making it much better for you and taking away the stress of your body having to eliminate these toxins.

Dr Hiromi Shinga, who pioneered the colonoscopy, is a firm believer in Kangen water and insists that it’s the only type of water you should drink to eliminate toxins and keep your body at its optimum pH level. Now, you might think this all sounds like a load of rubbish and that by simply drinking more water in the first place is going to help you feel better. Well, all I can say is that I have been drinking it for a few weeks and I have definitely noticed a difference in the way I feel - and it tastes great. This is one fad I’m going to stick to!

06. Interior Design

Before moving to Spain I was working towards a career in interior design, which has always been a real passion of mine. I moved around a lot in the UK, due to my partner’s career and every house we moved to I completely re-designed. I found the whole process very interesting and loved creating different looks and styles. Eventually I decided to do a Kelly Hoppen course a few years back, as she has always been very influential in the way I designed my houses. I learned a tremendous amount and enjoyed it, but then, having found out I was having twins, it was put on the back burner. There are some fabulous interior design shops here on the Coast, Udesign being one of my favourites. You can design anything from sofas to beds and they can create it for you, using the highest quality materials. I designed and renovated our whole house from top to bottom; we had everything removed so it was a blank canvas. By the time we had finished, it was literally a shell. It’s not been easy but I’ve loved every minute. Well, maybe not every minute - we slept on the sofa for about three months while the bedrooms were being decorated - but its definitely something I would love to do in the future. There are already some fantastic interior design firms in Marbella, but now that the kids are nearing school - who knows?

07. Birthday Celebrations This month I have two big birthday celebrations coming up: first my twins turn two and then I am hitting the ‘Dirty 30’. We will probably keep it simple with a barbecue for the nippers at the house with friends and family and some children’s entertainers. There are some great companies out there, like Marbella Parties, who provide everything you could need, such as face painters and magicians, so I will definitely be getting in touch to organise some fun for the kids. I have no idea what I have to look forward to, because my celebrations are being kept under wraps by the Mr. I just hope he hasn’t planned a skydive!

I’m really looking forward to having a good old pamper at the new Bardou salon in Puerto Banús; it looks amazing and has so many different treatments on offer. It’s always great to have a few hours to yourself to make you feel refreshed and revitalised!

ONE IN EVERY FOUR SMOKERS IN SPAIN SUFFERS FROM COPD (CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE)

and causes acute exacerbation of symptoms leading to the need for inpatient treatment. However, between 40 per cent and 55 per cent of patients diagnosed with COPD continue to smoke. “Stopping smoking is the best thing that can be done to protect the lungs and, if already suffering from COPD, it is fundamental in preventing worsening symptoms,” explains Dr José Joaquin Cebrián Gallardo, lung specialist at HC Marbella.

COPD manifests itself in two ways, tobacco playing a fundamental role in both. On the one hand it can cause emphysema, where the lungs are destroyed little by little, the alveoli deteriorating reducing the quantity of oxygen reaching the cells and increasing shortness of breath. On the other it can lead to chronic bronchitis, tobacco smoke causing the lining of the bronchi to be constantly inflamed and irritated resulting in excessive secretion of mucous which obstructs the respiratory airways.

DISCUSSION ABOUT THE DISEASEIt is likely that your doctor has told you that your disease is called COPD but you may not be sure what this means. COPD is a condition associated with smoking, which is characterised by difficulty in air passing through the bronchi, often causing the following symptoms: shortness of breath when walking or on increased activity and a productive cough which has worsened over the years. You may have had dyspnoea (shortness of breath) or “gasping for air,” which deteriorates under certain circumstances (on exercising, with a cold or respiratory infection etc) for a long time. Sometimes COPD is also known as chronic bronchitis or chronic emphysema.

HOW DO WE KNOW YOU HAVE COPD?When you come for a consultation, you will be asked about tobacco use, dyspnoea (shortness of breath), cough (especially first thing in the morning) and details of any sputum produced. To confirm the diagnosis we will carry out forced spirometry (breathing tests).

* There are 2 million people in Spain with COPD, more than 70 per cent of them undiagnosed.

* Tobacco is the main preventable risk factor in COPD.

* Between 40 and 55 per cent of patients diagnosed with COPD continue to smoke.

* Smokers with signs of COPD such as a cough, productive cough or shortness of breath should see a specialist to check for COPD.

COPD is a chronic, progressive disease with no cure which causes 50 deaths a day in Spain. The main risk factor is tobacco, making it a preventable disease. Despite this, 23 per cent of the Spanish population are smokers with the greatest percentage of smokers, 33 per cent, aged between 25 and 50.Smoking is also a trigger factor in COPD, it worsens the condition

1. STOP SMOKINGSMOKING IS EXTREMELY DAMAGING TO YOUR HEALTH!Stopping smoking is the best treatment there is. Stopping smoking is difficult but not impossible. On occasions you will feel an irresistible urge to smoke, you may be irritable, anxious with a greater appetite. Try and keep calm, these symptoms should NEVER be an excuse to start smoking again. The benefits of stopping smoking are immediate and can be demonstrated after only a few hours.

2. VACCINATIONSFlu is an infection which affects the respiratory tract, is different to a cold and can be serious in people with COPD whose respiratory airways are more sensitive. Bearing these factors in mind, all smokers should have the flu vaccine.

Pneumonia (an infection which affects the lungs) can worsen COPD, therefore if you are over 65 it is important to have the pneumoccal vaccine every five years. These vaccines can both be given together - your healthcare team will advise you about when to have them.

3. MEDICATION: INHALERSIn the case of respiratory conditions it is not only important to take your medication as it is prescribed but also to understand what it is for and how to take it. Ask your care team to explain about your inhalers, their use and function.

4. MAINTAIN AN APPROPRIATE WEIGHTBeing overweight or underweight is damaging to your health, maintenance of an optimum weight following a balanced diet is essential. A diet rich in fruit and vegetables is key, paying special attention to both the frequency of meals as well as the quantity of food. The best thing to drink is water, a daily intake of 1.5 litres is recommended, this also helps to thin any secretions.

5. RESPIRATORY PHYSIOTHERAPYTo alleviate dyspnoea (shortness of breath) see our recommendations below, they will help to improve your quality of life. Breathing correctly is essential when performing all the exercises suggested below.

*Controlled breathing: exercises to perform while lying down

Start with some exercises which you must do lying down, this will help to relax you, thereby slowing and calming your breathing as much as possible. If you need to you can put several pillows under your head. Repeat these exercises as many times as you feel comfortable. Lying down, place the palms of your hands, completely relaxed, on your abdomen. Breathe in gently through your nose, at the same time

inflating your abdomen (where your hands are resting), hold your breath for one or two seconds. With your lips pursed, breathe out slowly and completely through your mouth.

Now place your hands on your lowest ribs next to your waist. Breathe in gently through your nose to expand your ribcage (where your hands are resting). Hold your breath for one or two seconds, breathe out slowly through your mouth, with pursed lips, until there is no air left, you will see that your chest deflates.

*Controlled breathing: exercises to perform while seated.

The following exercises must be performed whilst sitting in a chair with your back straight and your legs slightly apart. Rest your hands across your thighs: breathe in through your nose and at the same time lift your arms making them into a v-shape. Breathe out through your mouth with your lips pursed, and slowly lower your arms until your hands are across your thighs again. Repeat the exercise several times.

Put your right hand on your right shoulder bending your elbow. Whilst breathing out through pursed lips, lower your body until your elbow reaches your left knee. On breathing in through your nose, lift your elbow upwards and backwards. Repeat this several times with your right arm. After a rest, do the same with your left arm.

IT IS ADVISABLE TO PERFORM THESE EXERCISES DAILY

Getting rid of secretions (bronchial hygiene) Coughing cleans the respiratory airways. For coughing to be effective, you must breathe in deeply and try and cough up any sputum in one or two coughs.

MOVE ABOUT... DON’T KEEP STILLDyspnoea, or shortness of breath, makes you want to sit down rather than move about. If you spend many hours sitting down, moving around becomes increasingly difficult. You need to walk, even if it is only in the hall in your home, every time you do this you will increase your exercise tolerance. Feeling “short of breath” with exercise is not dangerous. WALK EVERY DAY!

6.CLIMB STAIRSYou can do it slowly by breathing correctly. Here are a few tips for you to follow:

1. Stand in front of the first step and breathe in through your nose.2. Climb the steps you can (one, two or three) while breathing out.3. Stop and breathe in through your nose.4. Continue climbing and breathe out (one, two or three).

HERE ARE A FEW TIPS TO HELP YOU FEEL BETTER.

SURGERYINNOVATIVE, INTEGRATED

Functional Medicine was developed in the USA and it is a philosophy and outlook that addresses the underlying causes of disease, looking for the root problems as well as focusing on the relationship between patient and doctor.

1. Focuses on the whole person – as we’ve said time and again you cannot treat a knee in isolation – you must also include and assess the joints connected to it, the ankle, hip, lower back and the other leg! Otherwise you might simply be treating the symptom without addressing the real problem.

2. More than a scan – while Dr Lepistö appreciates, and can arrange if required, X-rays and MRI scans, he will also assess YOU, the real live human standing in front of him. Critical to understanding the core issues.

The Bodyworks Clinic, founded in 2004 by Clinical Director Estelle Mitchell, offers physiotherapy,

health screening and a number of innovative treatment options focusing on non-surgical options.

However, there is now a new member to the team, Dr Jyri Lepistö, Orthopaedic Consultant. For those that know Estelle this is a bit of a surprise.

Bodyworks has always taken a non-surgical approach to treatment, so what has changed?

Over the last 12 years I have strived to offer a wide range of alternatives to surgery, including Magnetic Resonance Therapy (MRT) for regenerating cartilage, ligaments and tendons. Combined with my detailed

3. Relationship between doctor and patient – during your consultation with Dr Lepistö you will have his undivided attention for as long as you need. In fact, it is so important to him that he focuses solely on you that he has his practice nurse sit in to take notes.

4. Before and after surgery – a common complaint is that people see a surgeon, are immediately scheduled for surgery and then . . . . no support after surgery. Dr Lepistö takes a different view. Surgery is hard on the body, and sometimes there are things we can do prior to surgery to get the best outcome. And rehabilitation and support afterwards are critical to getting the best recovery. Estelle adds that by working as a team, combining her physiotherapy knowledge and Dr Lepistö’s surgical skill, Bodyworks will ensure that you get the best outcome from surgery by supporting you before AND afterwards.

assessments and a number of cutting edge techniques this often mean our patients have no need for surgery at all. But I would like to think I am also known for my honesty and the clinic’s focus is on getting patients better – in the most effective way possible.

And sometimes surgery IS the best, most effective route forward.

So I am pleased to welcome Dr. Jyri Lepistö, Orthopaedic Consultant as part of my team. We hear that Dr Lepistö isn’t your typical surgeon. What makes his approach different?

As with all the members of my team Dr Lepistö is highly qualified with many years of experience. But he is also a little

Celebrity TV Trainer Rob Edmond gives it to you straight on how some simple training moves can make a big impact on your look for the coming season.

I BET YOU

on the dance floorLOOK GOOD CANSome tips include keeping your legs slightly elevated at night in bed, regularly foam roller, reduce your time on heels and swap to flats when you can, swim and, at the end of your regular showers, alternate between hot and cold water on your legs. In general, do anything you can to improve circulation down there.

Are your legs naturally muscular or are they just a bit fat? Before putting together your plan of attack it helps to know. You should have a good idea already but you need to make a judgement. Few women have naturally muscular legs, most need to develop the muscle and reduce fat. If you are unsure then see how you go on and change your plan accordingly.

Weights, Weights, Weights – Yes You Need Them for Slim and Toned Legs! Most women need a good mix of training which includes cardio, interval and resistance (yes, you need to do weights and, yes, it will help make them slimmer!) The aim is to increase your muscle mass to a level you are happy with while, at the same time, reducing fat.

Your legs will become more defined and, remember, the fat is the cause of the size problem, not the muscle.

This month’s guest fitness contributor, Rob Edmond, is best known as the Ex-S.A.S trainer / presenter of TV’s most watched training show - The Biggest Loser. Under his watch his clients have had UK and world records in fat loss and strength. He is a media regular with his various training and adventure shenanigans alongside celebrity and royalty. He continues to work internationally with his celebrities and as well as a select few clients in Marbella.

@robedmondrobedmond.com

S limmer and toned legs is a pretty obvious winning fix for females but many go astray in drawing

up an effective training plan to achieve them. Here’s my heads-up.

Achieving distinctive traps and forearms is pretty simple if you just focus more on them. They go untrained on regular male gym goers, not because it’s complicated but because they are not thought about

enough, which is strange as they are in everyone’s eye line and often the first thing people see (or don’t see - maybe that’s the problem!)

In general for both…Clean up your act, now is the time to get a good grip on your diet and ensure you are eating well and staying hydrated.

Eat healthily whenever possible and look after your intake. Excess fat stores

around your body are often the result of a poor diet, locking in the bad

stuff the body doesn’t want to circulate. That doesn’t mean a

crash diet, just good food (that means loads of veg or a little juicing too), portion control, a mix of food groups and, yes, that also includes natural fat.

Ladies, you need a plan.Firstly your legs need looking after. You need to improve the circulation to your legs, this will help supply the muscles that you want to tone, help reduce fat

deposits and aid recovery after all thetraining you

are going to do.

46

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Page 47: Society Marbella April 2016

Significant muscle growth is gradual, it doesn’t creep up on you and then, “Bang!” you wake up one morning looking like the Hulk. You simply get to where you want to be gradually and then maintain it.

Ladies, weight training should form an important part of your training regime, increasing your muscle definition, improving your posture, stimulating your metabolism and reducing fatdeposits. Look at doing two good total body workouts per week and don’t miss out on Squats and Deadlifts, these are two of the best compound exercises to fire up your metabolism, tone your legs and keep you looking good. Remember, a slight increase in your overall muscle mass will result in greater fat reduction, so really go for it.

Finish with cardio! The best celebrity legs do it, why aren’t you?Importantly, at the end of your weight sessions aim to get at least 30 minutes of steady cardio to turbo-charge your fat loss. On already tired legs it will keep the blood flowing and energy usage up, crucially eating into those fat deposits that have been stirred up by the resistance exercise when your other reserves are depleted.

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) Get one or two of these in per week to supercharge your metabolism, muscle growth and energy usage. So your weekly regime should ideally be two weight sessions with steady cardio atthe end. Two HIIT sessions per week and then as much other cardio as you can fit in. Swimming is a great cardio boost (and over here it’s a no brainer), as it really helps with circulation improvementand keeps you flexible from all that other training.

Traps and forearms; You just need to train them more.

The aim here is to highlight and focus your attention on these muscles rather than give you a full routine. Alongside your regular training a bit more focus on these muscles can make a massivedifference. Once defined they are highly visible and will be the first thing someone sees.

You are looking to pack on some serious muscle so keep it simple and go for high volume resistance training.

You can work your traps twice a week and your forearms will take a lot more abuse. An example of a good one for building super traps is behind your back bar bell shrug 10 sets of 10 reps at a weight 60 per

cent of your one rep maximum, throw it into your routine and watch them grow. For forearms some of my favourites are the reverse bar bell curl and isometric training, like simply dangling off the floor holding onto a pull up bar, but there is nothing better than convenience, so if you really want to go for it have some stuff you can do anywhere, like a grip trainer. Some of the biggest forearms out there are on people who hammer them every day, like lumberjacks and motocross riders, so don’t worry about super high volume and repeated training, they will adapt (it will just hurt a little until they do).

The added bonus is that with your new superman grip you’re less likely to lose that slippery drink - that is, unless you’ve been flashed by some of the new super lean legs hitting the floor this season.

Before we start with the ladies, can I just say I am SO glad that Leonardo DiCaprio finally got an Oscar, because it was really getting on my nerves. I was actually thinking of having one commissioned and sending it to him the week before just in case. Oh and thank God he got rid of that beard. I love a little bit of facial hair Leo, but the beard had to go.

Right I will get back on track now. Lady Gaga - or should I say Madonna’s mini-me - took a bashing over her last album ‘Artpop’ and has been trying to reinvent herself ever since (and teaming up with the legend that is Tony Bennett was a smart move, I have to say.) Now we all know our Madge is the queen of reinvention, I mean if there was an Olympic event for it, we all know would who the gold would go to. So it’s not really surprising that Miss Gaga has looked to Madonna for inspiration.

When she hit the red carpet it looked like she had just stepped out of the Material Girl video and didn’t she just take your breath away? As many of you may know, Madonna actually took her inspiration from Marilyn Monroe and what better way for Lady G to reinvent herself then emulating Hollywood’s leading lady.

Lady Gaga is obviously having a love affair with good old bleach these days which is, of course, fabulous at removing the past. My motto is ‘if in doubt, bleach it out’.

Bleach does does exactly what it says on the tin, strips away the old, leaving a new palette to work on. Clean blondes will always be synonymous with glamour which is obviously the direction in which Lady Gaga is wanting to go - think Jean Harlow, the Grandmother of platinum blonde.

It still baffles me how in those days they managed to get her that blonde and still keep hair on her head. Nowadays, we’ve got numerous products on the market which can counteract the damage done by bleach.

HELLUVA ONEDO!I apologise for hijacking this month’s column but I just HAD to jump in and discuss the Oscars with you. Why? The highly lacquered, stiffly sculpted up-dos that dominated Oscars past have been

dumped in favour of the least contrived looks to emerge on the red carpet in years. Stars are embracing something more modern and effortless - wispy half-up styles, sleek, centre parts styled

with ponytails, buns and even loose tumbling waves. Some of it worked, some of it didn’t, so I am going to take you through who shone like the stars and who crashed and burned.

Now for the science bit children; the primary component of hair attacked by bleach is protein, which is the hairs’ strength. Just one application of bleach takes away 20 per cent of the hairs’ strength and with each application thereafter this continues. I like to compare bleach to drinking alcohol - you know you are going to feel poorly the next day, but you still do it ‘cos the results are so damn good.

Good bleached hair is a skill. It is a fine balancing act between the tone and condition and this is where you need a talented colourist. Bleach is one of my favourite chemicals, but it needs to be treated with respect, because complacency leads to disaster. I swear by Olaplex, a three phase treatment which allows me safely to colour and bleach hair without the risk of hair damage. Olaplex 30 minute treatment, €49, Olaplex No. 3 €42,00 to be used at home.

Sticking with the ice blondies, I loved Jennifer Lawrence’s pearly blonde new look and do not agree at all with critics who said the hue didn’t compliment her skin tone. The hair looked clean and fresh and the touch of back-combing, pretty middle part and hair so shiny you could almost see your reflection was spot on. Oh, and you can’t beat a long graduated bob - what’s not to love?

John Legend’s wife Chrissy Teigen - how much do I love her at the moment? This is how to rock pregnancy with effortless glamour. Her stylist has purposely taken the hair away from her face to take advantage of that gorgeous glow you get in the third trimester. This look is all about bringing attention to her flawless skin. Golden, glowy and radiant. Chrissy’s wispy do is worthy of an award in itself and shows that you don’t have to go perfectly polished to fit in on the red carpet.

Emily Blunt does pregnant in Prada. The expecting mama dazzled in her empire-waist pink gown paired with a glossy thirties finger wave which has been modernised by keeping it straighter at the root. She went for a classic and simplified ‘do’ over an ostentatious style with her tresses styled into gentle waves that hold their shape without looking stiff.

Amy Adams did fifties glamour at the Vanity Fair Oscars party. Amy’s braided side part and loose waves contrasted beautifully with her form-fitting Versace bustier dress. With her gorgeous red wavy hair she looked rather like a certain Miss Jessica Rabbit, don’t you think? The secret to getting a braid like Adams’s super-tight is to braid hair when it’s wet. That way you can get in really tight and it dries clean. Also important is using product on the damp hair before braiding it such as Redken’s Braid Aid, €16,88.

The blonde fifties-inspired quiff Charlize Theron was sporting has set up a new hair trend - and a winning one for pixie haircuts. This look plays up her bone structure; that girl has cheekbones to die for. What draws me to this look is that it’s SO glamorous, yet it also plays to her athleticism and doesn’t try to be too girly.

Sofia Vergara showed us how to up our pony game. I think she should have won the award for the most unexpected do of the night as we so rarely see Sofia stray from voluminous, glossy waves. I mean, she even wore it down for her recent wedding.

On the night her hair was tied in a low slung ponytail with a height at the crown and a sharp centre part. She finished her look with a dewy complexion and statement red lips.

I think there seemed to be A LOT of last minute invitations sent out, as way too many celebs looked like they just hadn’t bothered at all. There is a difference between a purposely ‘undone’ do to an ‘I just couldn’t be arsed’ do.

Margot Robbie looked like she just stepped off a beach and put on a gown, but not in a good way and with the gold dress I think she looked rather like the Oscar statue. Do you think that was what she was going for?

Rooney Mara - what were you thinking? The graphic, sharp trio of buns would have worked perfectly on the catwalk but, the red carpet? I will give her the thumbs up for her deep Bordeaux, brick red lip that kicked up the blue of her eye colour.

Kerry Washington, usually always gets it bang on but this time she let me down. Her hair was back-combed at her crown and clasped into a raffish ponytail, however I think they should have slicked it back instead of going for so much height. She already has an oblong face shape, so the height at the top accentuates that. Not sure that her alter ago Olivia Pope would have approved with this look (although wouldn’t you just die for her wardrobe on Scandal?)

As for Jennifer Garner I think she looked stunning with the classic low-slung up-do from the back, but the front was too severe. She looks like a governess and, as this is her first major appearance since she split from Ben, I think her team should have gone for a softer look.

Daisey Ridley scraped her hair back into a slicked back do which showed off her razor sharp cheekbones, but I think the stylist went too far with his futuristic architectural knot. I mean, I know she was in Star Wars but come on! The piece hanging down at the back spoils the whole look. I see what they were trying to do but – NO. The back of the dress is stunning and this takes the focus away from it.

I wish Kate Winslet would leavethe blonde alone. It does nothing for herskin tone and makes her look like she is on crack, or that she needs a bath anda good scrub. I think it’s high time for new hair. I’m over this brassy blonde with dark roots and the boring mid-length waves; how about a slightly darker hue and chop of a few inches? It would be SO much more current and youthful. This is getting borderline dated. I personally think she bullies her colourist into keeping her blonde as there is no way they are doing it by choice.

NAILED ITThis time of the year can be a little bleak for your nails. The festive season is over so we wave ta ta to red, gold and anything glittery but we can’t yet replace them with hot pinks and bright corals, so this is where I swoop in to save you from reaching for that boring polish you don’t really like but ‘matches with everything’ STOP!

NAILED ITWhy not give one of these DIY stylish nail designs a try?

One of the most important things to make sure of when you’re giving yourself a manicure is that you’re starting with a good base; this means no ridges and loose bits of cuticle.

The best way to make sure of this is to go to a professional to have a tidy up on your nails but if you’re doing it all from home, these cubed nail buffers from Sephora work a treat to get rid of all the dead cells from the surface of the nail.

THE BEAUTY BAROMETER Ensure your nails are looking polished and perfect with expert advice from our gorgeous beauty girl, Jess Miles.

Page 57: Society Marbella April 2016

01.You will also need some small nail jewels. You can get these online or in beauty department stores, if all else fails, you can always ask your teenage daughter as she is bound to have some!

02.Start again with a base coat and once it has dried stick on your French tip guides but this time a little higher up the cuticle.

03.Paint your nails with desired colour but instead of painting above the sticker like in the last look, just paint underneath leaving the top area of your nail bare.

04.With some tweezers take a nail jewel, dip into some nail glue or top coat and apply it to the middle area of the nail just below the cuticle. I chose to use a jewel that was the same colour as the nail polish but this is optional.

01.First step is to apply a base coat on the nails.

02.Once the base coat is totally dry, stick on a French tip guide sticker just below your lunula (the half moon shape by the cuticle) For this part it is very important that the sticker is stuck down very well at the edges otherwise the nail varnish will leak under the sticker and it will make the design messy.

03.Start to paint your nails with your desired colour (I like to use monochromes for these looks as I think it makes them look more modern) peeling off the stickers as you go, if you wait until the nail varnish is dry to take them off it will leave you with lifted nail varnish and chips.

04.Use a brush or a q-tip with some nail polish remover to neaten up any lines if needs be.

FOR THESE TWO LOOKS ALL YOU NEED IS A NAIL VARNISH COLOUR OF YOUR CHOICE & SOME FRENCH

TIP GUIDE STICKERS

05.Finish the design with a shiny or matte top coat.

Through time, princesses, models, directors and designers have used fashion to redefine and enhance

their position. This hasn’t necessarily been determined by current trends, but rather by the power that clothes have to define a personality. In the eternal debate of whether we should (or shouldn’t) pay attention to the attire of an influential personality, the truth is that it is a powerful communication strategy.

This is how the masters of Power Dressing - Margaret Thatcher, Princess Diana, Jacqueline Kennedy, to name just a few - evolved this important fashion concept, born in the 1980s. Focusing on portraying confidence and power through the art of dressing, a number of prominent women showed that they were fluent in its unique language.

Have you ever encountered an enigmatic woman who, for some reason, catches your eye? Is it her style, her confidence, the way she carries herself with such imposing elegance, or a combination of all these elements that confers upon her an enchanting femininity?

The truth is, that the essence of femininity is attitude. It doesn’t signify frivolity and ostentation, nor does it mean that it is romantic and naive. It involves embracing the meaning of being a woman and there are many ways of

achieving this. A woman can be strong, not necessarily screaming, “Fashion!” No, true femininity is so much more subtle and effortless, a seductive je ne sais quoi that is the epitome of grace and style.

Therefore, when it comes to successful dressing in the real world, elegance and subtlety go a long way. But, how does high fashion really fit into the equation of everyday life? In the professional field, for example, the way you dress tells the world what kind of work you do, how seriously you take it, and - here’s the complicated part - what kind of woman

61

Chic Happens

1. Distinctive Style

When it comes to modern power dressing, you’ve got to wear what you love. If you’re wearing something that is not your style, it’s probably going to show. Find a style that suits your personality and makes you feel confident to define your independent visual identity - it’s all about owning your outfit and your look. Whatever your role, developing a go-to style helps you stand out for the right reasons. Whether it’s a particular colour or silhouette, or maybe an era-inspired look, different women, from Audrey Hepburn to Kate Moss, have adopted signature looks and become style icons. This recognizable, predictable visual identity communicates consistency and reliability - not to mention self-knowledge.

2. Quality Over Quantity

Investing in quality additions to your wardrobe will ensure you have pieces for the long haul and don’t have to acquire new items every season. Looking at the construction of the pieces, paying attention to the quality of the fabric and inspecting the small details are key to owning pieces that will last. Also, making sure that clothes are the right fit means you will not only look great, but be more comfortable as well.

A well fitted blazer will instantly smarten up your outfit. Right now the trend is for matching suit sets, especially in the corporate world,

you are. Do you value comfort above all with flat shoes, breathable fabrics and an urban twist with nothing too tailored,or do you prefer a more feminine approach, hiding your steel behind cashmere and silk? Can you define your image in one palette (black, navy, white, khaki) or a single designer (Calvin Klein, Diane Von Furstenberg)? Or are you more of a vintage-thrift type? These distinctions matter. Their consequences are practical, of course, but they’re also existential.

The essence of femininity is

attitude

but you don’t have to stick to fitted, tailored clothes all the time. Another way to work some power dressing magic into your wardrobe is with luxurious fabrics, like silk and cashmere. A minimalist leather bag, an everyday cashmere cardigan and high quality leather boots - all in classic styles - should serve you for years to come. And once you’ve found your quality pieces, you need to care for them properly. Use hangers that won’t damage the clothes (invest in a few slim velvet ones) and remember that a freshly pressed finish adds a refined touch, even to items reaching their expiry date.

Take a look at the following tips for modern power dressing and build a style that will serve you well on every occasion:

3. Balance is Key

Once you have defined your personal style essence and drawn together clothes that materialize it, it’s time to have fun putting these outfits together! Just remember to follow a few basic fashion rules to balance out your looks. If you’re wearing a backless top or are exposing a lot of skin in the neck and chest area, balance out the amount of skin you’re showing with a pair of long trousers or a long skirt. Or, if you choose to expose your legs with a short skirt, we love long sleeves to keep it distinctive and elegant. Balance out tight clothing pieces with a flowing shirt or a jacket with movement to give your look an edgy touch.

4. Expert Accessorizing

Accessories can be the easiest way to trip up an otherwise sharp look. They’re also the easiest way to elevate an otherwise boring or mediocre ensemble to something extraordinary. Accessories are focal points, so they’re great for playing up your assets. Consider them affordable tools for transforming an outfit from out-of-date to current, or to infuse a traditional look with some modern flair.

Accessories can also help you transition from context to context, without doing a full costume change. For the work field, you can start off with a slim, tailored suit and pair it with

62

striking, feminine scarves, softening your look and exuding distinction. If scarves aren’t your style, consider creatively layering necklaces or bracelets, or find a few pairs of bold glasses to add to the mix. Chunky masculine watches are a stylish option if you want a bolder piece of jewellery that is still fairly classic. And remember, shoes can say a lot about a person.

When it comes to power dressing, heels are an instant confident booster. A pair of statement shoes correctly paired with your look and carried with elegance will be the finishing touch that will give you the confidence to take on the world!

I t may look like a Huayra with a rear wing, but the BC is almost a completely new car

Horacio Pagani is nothing if not sentimental. The idea for his first foray into the supercar world with a car bearing his name was originally predicated on his friendship with fellow Argentinean, the late, great Juan Manuel Fangio.

Fangio introduced Horacio to Mercedes-Benz and told him that if he ever built his own car, its engine should come from the oldest car manufacturer in the world. When he eventually decided to build his own car, Horacio took his old friend’s advice, and when the mid-engine Zonda C12 was unveiled to an astonished world at the 1999 Geneva Auto Salon, it was powered by a 394hp, 6.0 litre Mercedes V12.

The Zonda line exited the stage in 2014 on a high note with the stunning 800hp track only Revolución, but the road car baton had already been passed to the Huayra two years before.

Powered by the 6.0 litre bi-turbo Mercedes-AMG V12 producing 730hp and 1,000Nm of torque, Pagani’s second and much more high-tech hypercar made its Geneva debut with almost double the power of the original Zonda C12.

As of early 2015, all 100 copies of the Huayra had been spoken for, a number dictated by Pagani’s agreement with engine supplier Mercedes-AMG. So it was time for a new car and a new engine contract.

While it still bears the Huayra moniker and at first glance appears to be largely the same car with a big rear wing, the Huayra BC is actually so different that of all its body components, only the roof panel remains unchanged.

When early rumours that the new model would be called Huayra BC started to leak, everyone scratched their heads trying to figure out the meaning of the two letter suffix. The logic was simple. Following the ideology of the Zonda F being named as a tribute to Fangio, Horacio elected to call the new model Huayra BC for his friend the late Benny Caiola, who passed away in 2010, aged 79.

Benny started his working life as a plasterer in Italy and then emigrated to the US when he was 17. There he lived the American dream, building up a very successful real estate development business in New York.

And as a lover of Italian sports cars he began to assemble what ended up as the world’s largest private Ferrari collection.

An aficionado of Italian supercars in general, Benny was a man who ‘got’ what Horacio Pagani was trying to achieve from day one, and immediately signed up as his first ever customer. Horacio uses the word ‘inspirational’ when he speaks of Benny’s continued patronage and friendship over the years. “Benny was the quintessential gentleman who never forgot his humble roots,” he says of his late friend.

If the Huayra was a technological tour de force compared to the Zonda’s 20th Century concept, the Huayra BC is a further leap forward. “The development process at Pagani is always on-going, benchmarking where we are against new technology and what potential competitors are doing now and in the near future,” said Horacio. “The Huayra went on sale before Le Ferrari, P1 and 918 Spyder, all of which have electric hybrid elements in their designs.

At this point we came to a crossroads where we had to make the decision whether or not to adopt these new technologies as well,” he explained. “But after weighing all the options we decided that taking on more weight and complexity was at odds with the lightweight philosophy we have always pursued.”

“The AMT gearbox weighs about 40 percent less than a comparable dual-clutch unit.”

88

TORQUE TALK

Page 89: Society Marbella April 2016

Once that decision was made three targets were set for the Huayra BC:

1. To be the lightest, globally homologated hypercar.

2. Develop a chassis and suspension system using state-of-the-art competition car technology adapted for the road, with the aim of delivering the highly focused driving experience for which Pagani cars are renowned.

3. Develop a bespoke Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) that marries uncompromised performance and comfort.

As before, the heart of the Huayra BC is the 5,980cc Mercedes-AMG (M158) twin-turbo V12, but with the wick turned up considerably. While Pagani has yet to confirm the definitive horsepower count, they alluded to a number in the region of 800hp, with 1,000Nm of torque. This is transmitted to the rear wheels via their new seven-speed AMT gearbox. Speculatively, the Huayra BC should be able to reach 100km/h in around 3.2 sec, with a Vmax around 360km/h.

Apart from uprated internals and IHI turbochargers, the revised AMG motor expels its spent gases through a new titanium sports exhaust with lower

backpressure. As well as being significantly lighter than the previous unit, this new exhaust also makes a nicer noise in keeping with the BC’s more focused intent.

Importantly for worldwide sales, the mighty V12 engine has EU6 and US 50 State emissions certification, the latter including the stricter California CARB standard.

While many supercar makers use a dual clutch gearbox for its speed and smoothness, this design carries a weight penalty that Pagani’s philosophy would rather avoid. Thus, they asked Xtrac, their existing transmission partner, to develop a new AMT gearbox that combined the speed of a dual-clutch unit with the relatively low weight of a clutchless manual.

The British gearbox specialists came up trumps with a unit featuring a new electro-hydraulic actuation system and carbon-fibre synchronisers, both aimed at increasing the speed and precision of gear engagement. The electronic clutch control mapping was also heavily revised to facilitate fast and smooth shifting despite the massive amount of torque it has to handle.

The AMT gearbox weighs about 40 percent less than a comparable dual-clutch unit.

And as the gearbox is placed behind the engine, the reduction in weight and package height aft in the chassis is critical to the Huayra BC’s handling prowess.

The new electronically controlled active differential seamlessly adapts to the available grip on the tarmac, providing greater traction and safety in extremis, especially in slippery conditions.

A carbon-fibre monocoque centre tub is a Pagani hallmark, and as before this comes out of one of the Autoclaves in their Modena-based factory. The rear space frame, made from Chrome Moly Vanadium steel tubes, carries the engine and rear suspension, and is bolted to the tub.

The Huayra Coupe’s kerb weight of 1,350kg is already some 60kg less than a Porsche GT3 RS, but apart from increasing power, Pagani’s resolute aim was to trim excess flab as well. A long list of efficiency gaining measures sees kerb weight fall to just 1,218kg, making for a sensational power-to-weight ratio of just 1.52kg/hp.

The race to reduce unsprung weight is spotlighted in the bespoke suspension components, which Pagani claims are the lightest ever seen on an ultra-high performance road car.

89

The links of the Huayra BC’s racecar style double wishbone suspension are fashioned from HiForg, an aircraft grade aluminium alloy of very high strength and low weight. This results in a weight saving of 25 percent compared to the equivalent Huayra Coupe suspension parts. The uprights were also redesigned for lower weight and increased rigidity. As before, Ohlins supplies the race style adjustable dampers.

The final chassis refinement is the adoption of tripod axle drive shafts, a high component integration design taken from the world of Le Mans endurance sports cars that increases strength and saves weight.

Essentially, this means the wheel hub carries the unions for the tripods and driveshafts. Directly milled into the rear hubs, the tripods are of a larger diameter with thinner wall stiffness, but the bearing on the outside on of the hub is stiffer because of its larger diameter. A tripod design with a large diameter hollow driveshaft saves about 5.0kg per corner.

Together, these lighter but even stronger suspension components reduce the inertia of every suspension and steering input, delivering better handling and driver feedback.

Despite the lower weight, the trackday bias of the Huayra BC led Pagani to seek even better braking ability than before.

Their normal supplier, Brembo, came up with

a bespoke carbon-ceramic brake system using 380 x 34mm vented discs all round, clamped by six-pot calipers in front and four-pot calipers at the rear. These monoblock alloy calipers are ultra-stiff to resist distortion under hard use.

APP, another long standing Pagani supplier, make the exquisite lightweight forged alloy wheels. The road going wheels are 20 and 21-inch front/rear respectively, and shod with Pirelli PZero Corsa tyres, while the trackday equivalents are 19 and 20-inch, shod with Pirelli PZero Corsa R rubber. Pagani told us that with the sticky trackday tyres, the BC is capable of pulling almost 2.0g in lateral acceleration, a new record for a street legal car.

The performance envelope of the Bosch ESP system has been extended to make full use of the new chassis and aerodynamic developments. In this case, a Track setting has been added to the existing Comfort and Sport modes, optimising performance and traction when the car is being extended on a race circuit.

Active aerodynamics is part and parcel of the normal Huayra, and helps it achieve its sensational cornering performance and stability at speed. The Huayra BC takes this to the next level with even more downforce capabilities.

Normally more downforce means more drag, but the engineers also conducted a lot of wind tunnel work to improve the internal airflow characteristics of the various scoops and ducts that bring cooling air into the car and draw hot air out. The greater internal air velocity achieved from this work has the beneficial effect of improving cooling and lowering aerodynamic drag.

The cabin of a Pagani has always been a very special place. Unlike mainstream supercars that sometimes borrow some fittings and switches from mass-produced models, every single switch and knob in a Pagani is bespoke and machined from solid aluminium.

With the track day theme running through the Huayra BC, much of the cabin is toned anthracite black, with the sporty

but classy combination of fine leather, Alcantara and matt carbon-fibre.

In typical motorsport style, the steering wheel is covered in suede leather for maximum grip. To save weight, the mechanical parking brake was replaced with an electric one.

When you buy a Pagani, you are not just buying a car, you are acquiring a work of art. These individually handcrafted machines epitomise the designers vision and the artisans skills. Thus they are far more than just objects, and as each is made to the colour and trim choice of their owners, no two are exactly alike.

There will only ever be 20 copies of the Huayra BC made, with a price tag of at 2.35 million euros (plus taxes), but if you want one the bad news is that they were all already spoken for even before their debut at this year’s Geneva Motor Show.

“Active aerodynamics is part and parcel of the normal Huayra, and helps

it achieve its sensational cornering performance and stability at speed.”

APPROACHING ROUNDABOUTS

It’s important to remember to give way to traffic already on the roundabout. If the roundabout is outside urban areas of towns or cities, keep right.

If the roundabout is in a built-up area inside a town or city and the lanes are clearly marked, you should use the lane that best corresponds to the exit you need to take.

LEAVING ROUNDABOUTS

This causes the most confusion amongst drivers. Which lane to choose? Why do I get beeped at if I’m in the right lane? Drivers must exit roundabouts from the right hand lane, because the only way to leave the roundabout

is by turning right. This doesn’t mean we always have to enter the roundabout from the right hand lane. It depends on the exit we need to take. However this simple rule, in practice, can be more complex. Let us see some examples.

1st EXIT RIGHT

IEnter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate and exit roundabout.

CONTINUING STRAIGHT ON (e.g. 2nd EXIT STRAIGHT AHEAD)

Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate prior to exit and leave roundabout.

If you are unsure about the correct way to negotiate roundabouts, here are some simple rules to help you enter and exit roundabouts safely and in the right lane.

TURNING LEFT OR CHANGING DIRECTION (e.g. 3rd OR FINAL EXIT)Enter roundabout keeping to left hand side lane. Stay in lane until you have passed the exit before your turn off, then change lane by indicating right and giving other road users sufficient time to anticipate your manoeuvre. Don’t forget that drivers circulating in the outside lanes have priority, so use your mirrors to ensure you are not blocking them as you change lanes.

Mike LaCorte, a founder of Conflict International has over 20 years experience in the investigation industry. He has been instrumental in drawing a number of high profile corporate and private investigation cases to a conclusion and his expertise in gathering legally admissible evidence is highly regarded. Mike speaks English, Spanish and Italian, and was elected 2nd Vice President of the World Association of Detectives in 2015.

conflictinternational.com

Conflict Marbella is the new dedicated consultancy service in the region from Conflict international who, from their head office in London, specialise in providing bespoke intelligence, investigation, security and risk advice services to clients worldwide.

Through a network of experienced professionals based locally, Conflict Marbella has the ability to tap into the resources of its parent company which has extensive experience in many jurisdictions, particularly when it comes to matrimonial issues. They pride themselves on professional and discreet assistance when it comes to investigating potential infidelity and child custody matters.

Conflict Marbella director, Mike LaCorte, says very often time is of the essence and they are ready to act at short notice. “Only recently we had someone call us to say their partner had gone to a hotel overseas and they had some concerns. So we had a team on the ground within two hours and monitored the subject who then flew back to the UK. Our team followed and handed over to our British guys and we carried on monitoring throughout. People want answers pretty much there and then, and we do all we can in order to mobilise quickly.”

The way surveillance is carried out has changed enormously in recent years and advances in digital technology allow the client to be kept up to date far more easily. Using the latest high definition covert surveillance equipment, any evidence can be passed back directly from almost anywhere in the world.

“People want answers pretty much there and then, and we do all we can in order to mobilise quickly.”

BETTER TO FIND OUT THE TRUTH

Uncovering matrimonial issues is clearly a sensitive area and Mike says although they are brought into a difficult situation, there is often a certain peace of mind of sorts when suspicions are either confirmed or ruled out. “Once the call is made there is certainly an issue. There are obviously questions that someone cannot answer themselves, and they have no means of finding out, so that’s where we come in.”

If an affair is discovered and the other party moves towards divorce proceedings, there are often additional investigations that take place, which Conflict have many years of experience in carrying out. Mike says: “Depending on the extent of the assets shared between both parties, more often than not there is an issue of one of the spouses hiding assets and we are brought in to find what is being hidden. We always work with

the knowledge of what evidence is needed to be admissible in future court proceedings, so everything we do is compiled into a report which can be passed on to a legal team for further action.”

“We are also asked to compile co-habitation reports if it is believed a spouse is living with a third party. This can have an effect on the custody of a child or maintenance payments, so reliable evidence in this area is key.”

All investigations are carried out in full accordance with international standards and respect of human rights established by the UK’s Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act and The Human Rights Act.

The ability to liaise with colleagues in other countries is becoming more important in the world of surveillance and investigation. As people begin to live their lives more internationally, it is now vital to be able to access local knowledge in many jurisdictions around the globe. “We very often work with experienced investigators based in the country they are working in,” Mike added. “Not only because they know their own patch better than we ever can, but also with an eye to making sure we have someone on the

ground who has full knowledge of the law in that country.”

“One of the key strengths of Conflict Marbella is that anyone who gets in touch will not only have access to our team based in the region who can carry out an investigation for them quickly and efficiently, but they can also activate an international dimension to that investigation easily by drafting in the resources of our parent company, Conflict International.”

INTERNATIONAL ELEMENT TO INVESTIGATIONS

Mike and fellow director Jon Fawcett are both full members of the World Association of Detectives, a global body formed to uphold the standards of the profession. Mike is also now a vice-president, alongside membership of other reputable associations such as the ABI, WAPI and CII.

“Making that first call when there are signs of trouble in a relationship is always difficult,” says Mike. “But it is often better to confirm or allay suspicions rather than allow them to make matters worse.”

THE STRAIT OF GIBRALTAR

100

Page 101: Society Marbella April 2016

At the narrowest point, Spain and Morocco are separated by 7.7 nautical miles. These miles are known

as “STROG” by the British Royal Navy, standing, of course, for “Strait of Gibraltar”. It is between 160 and 490 fathoms deep. But enough of the navy lark! The strait is 14.3 kilometres wide and between 300 and 900 metres deep. It opened about five and a half million years ago as a result of what is known as the “Zanclean” flood, and as the African plate moves closer to the Eurasian plate it will close once again. This, however, is not likely to happen in the near future. On either side of the strait stand the Pillars of Hercules.

On the Spanish side is the rock of Gibraltar, and on the Moroccan side Jebel Musa (although Monte Hacho in Ceuta also claims this distinction). Gibraltar may have been one of the last outposts of Neanderthal man, who arrived some 125,000 years ago. Homo Sapiens then arrived about 40,000 years ago, and gradually edged out Neanderthal man fifteen thousand years later. The strait has always been a highway as well as a barrier. Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals, Berbers, have all sailed over or along it.

The Convoy de la Victoria crossed from Spanish Morocco to peninsular Spain in July 1936, bringing with it the Army of Africa, thus securing Franco’s triumph during the Spanish Civil War.

Today it is second only to the English Channel as the world’s busiest shipping lane, and, with the Suez canal at the other end of the Mediterranean, it forms a fast route between the Atlantic coast of Europe and the Middle and Far East. Eighty per cent of the gas consumed by the EU passes through this corridor.

Quite apart from its commercial importance, it has for centuries been of prime importance strategically. It is for this reason that it was seized by Britain, then the world’s greatest maritime power, in 1704 and consolidated as a British possession in 1713 by the Treaty of Utrecht. Its importance was underlined during the Second World War when German U-boats took advantage of the internal currents to pass from the Atlantic into the Mediterranean without detection. Some sixty-two managed the feat, but getting out was a different matter. No U-boats ever made it back into the Atlantic, being either sunk or scuttled.

The currents are interesting. The direct linkage between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean creates a unique pattern. This is the result of the interaction of various tidal and wind forces, coupled with global evaporative systems. The water flows more or less continuously both eastwards and westwards. The westward flow, being saltier and therefore denser, flows at a lower depth from the Mediterranean into the Atlantic. This is known as the Mediterranean Outflow. The Mediterranean Inflow enters eastwards from the Atlantic above the Outflow, being low in salinity and therefore of less density.

Generally speaking, over a period of time, the balance of this flow is eastwards due to the evaporation rate within the Mediterranean basin which is higher than the combined inflow of the rivers which flow into it. The “Camarinal Sill” which is located at the far western end of the Strait also limits the mixing of the two currents, so that the cold less saline Atlantic water passes over the warm Mediterranean water which forms a layer of salty bottom water. When it does manage finally to escape into the Atlantic this outflow can be traced for thousands of kilometres into the ocean before it is finally lost. A large tidal flow entering the Mediterranean over the sill will create internal waves; such waves are almost imperceptible on the surface which is why, for all intents and purposes, the Mediterranean is a tideless sea.

But whilst natural waves may not be present on the surface of the waters, such cannot be said about political ones. The Strait lies almost exclusively within the territorial waters of Spain and Morocco. The British, however, claim territorial waters of three nautical miles around the rock. This means that in British eyes part of the Strait lies in international waters. This is but one of the causes of the deep antipathy which exists between Spain and Gibraltar on the subject of the Rock’s sovereignty.

Its strategic importance is underlined by the fact that the greater part of the Spanish navy is berthed in the area, whilst both Spanish and US aircraft fly overheard from their base at Morón. The British Royal Navy, of course, is quite at home in the Rock’s waters. The whole area bristles with electronic equipment which is able to identify threats up to 150 kilometres distant. It stands at the centre of the NATO operations countering the specific Islamist threat emanating from North Africa.

Al Qaeda has targeted the Strait in its plan to destabilise the world’s economy, and the Jihadist trade in hashish forms a vital element in the financing of its activities. The Mediterranean’s two biggest ports are to be found here. In Spain, Algeciras saw the passage of five million containers in 2014, whilst in Morocco Tangiers saw a further three million, which number is expected to grow to eight million over the next few years. The passage of illegal immigrants into Spain from Morocco is rather more controlled. As a result of the vigilance exercised by the Guardia Civil, only some seven thousand people made it across last year. We can compare this figure to the numbers flooding into Italy from Libya!

The numbers may, of course, increase if the plan hatched in December 2003 between Spain and Morocco comes to fruition. This is for the construction of an undersea rail tunnel to link Europe with Africa. The plan was discussed again in 2012, and the more sanguine of the planners claim that the project could be completed by 2025. There are also plans afoot for tidal power generating stations, but it is, perhaps, wise not to hold one’s breath whilst awaiting such eventualities!

Timeless Gallery Group (TGG)The new era of art collecting is here.

Timeless Gallery Group is run by Joanna Segelstrom, who has more than 25 years experience in the fields of fine arts and contemporary art and the young entrepreneur Mikael Segelstrom. Proof of this professionalism is the pair’s expanding empire that now comprises seven galleries, six in Europe and one in Miami, Florida. The latter is an example of the strong professional relationships that Mikael developed in the United States. The Segelstroms’ success is due to good artist management, impeccable taste, painstaking attention to detail and strict client confidentiality. Most of us will be familiar with the maxim that holds that success will arise from following your passion and this is exactly what the Segelstrom family has done. Moreover, they turned Timeless Galleries into not only a hotspot for art lovers and investors, but also a second home for many of them. Timeless is outstanding for its tight relationships with artists and lovers of exquisite art. It is a place where one can experience the beautiful, the rare and the valuable in one space and feel part of one, big family. This is a venue where business is conducted smoothly and without pressure and where clients are able to make investment decisions while being treated like members of the family.

The luxurious side of art appreciation The galleries offer a luxurious experience, not only via valuable art pieces, but also by paying the strictest attention to every single detail. From the showroom’s design, to the personal service offered to clients and the professionalism of the team, there is plenty to surprise even the most jaded investor. The gallery is a creative hub and staff members have revealed that several regular clients had never thought of collecting art before entering the gallery for the first time. TGG doesn’t sell art - it provides a base for understanding its enigmatic world, offering people the opportunity to define their taste, support artists, enter the world of free expression and, of course, to build knowledge of the business. Many clients are invited to TGG’s private art villa in Benahavís, one of the most desirable spots in Europe, to enjoy the finest pieces of TGG´s collection. After experiencing a couple of days in an environment filled with fantastic art, architecture,

114

food, music, cars and intelligent people, many find it difficult to return to reality. Collectors are flown in to stay at Mikael’s villa so they can experience living with art, which is proof of the man’s exceptional business mind and artistic sensibility. This is how luxury is defined by TGG - the artistic should be experienced in every single element of our lives.

The expansion of TGG Timeless Gallery Group won its reputation by providing top quality support for its artists, regular feedback to its clients, amazing ROI results for its investors and unconditional passion for art, both as a pleasure and as a profession. This ultimately has led to the Timeless Gallery expansion, and a constantly increasing client interest has generated the opening of the two new showrooms - one in Marbella and one in Miami. Many artists have already expressed an interest in being showcased at these state-of-the-art venues. The collection is constantly increasing and, although the gallery specialises in exclusive artworks, there is a range for every taste and budget. If you love art and want to enjoy it, TGG will offer you the best, no matter what. This is another reason that TGG keeps expanding around the world.

The investments of passion Not many realise that art is a valuable asset; already TGG has built a serious portfolio of investors. This is augmented by strong artist support from TGG founder Joanna, the overseeing of all aesthetic, technical, legal and economic aspects, the High Net Worth Individuals (HNWI) network and impeccable artistic taste; these generate new assets daily for clients and investors. The Segelstroms predict that the proportion of all luxury spending on art will continue to increase as investors seek assets that will retain their value in the longer term, especially in a period of economic uncertainty.

Finally, there is a growing recognition of art as an investment asset class by TGG investors. People have become more sophisticated in their financial and estate planning and have begun seriously to view art as an investment. Some take a more in-depth and measured approach to portfolio management and are willing to consider diversification strategies that encompass more exotic investment

classes, such as art and other collectible assets.

Last but not least, the current socio-economic context creates a demand for ‘real assets’ because many serious investors lost money in the financial crisis by investing in products they did not understand and are turning back to things that are closer to their heart and which, at the same time, offer protection and a solid return on investment.

With financial markets still in flux, some HNWIs have indicated that they are approaching their ‘passion’ investments as investor-collectors, seeking out those items that are perceived to have a tangible long-term value, which is exactly what TGG provides.

However, as the operation of fine art markets is complex, TGG allows those with or without inside knowledge to reap substantial benefits.

Finally, apart from a potential increase in value, art provides these additional financial benefits:

* Art provides a hedge against inflation and currency devaluation.

* There is little risk of losing your principal if you purchase from Timeless Gallery Group.

* No minimum investment is required.

* Art investments enjoy favourable tax treatment.

* Reduction of risk because of low correlation with other financial assets.

* Possibility of earning extra revenue by lending out the work or of participating in events such as exhibitions and meetings of experts.

* Art has no geographical risk and can be moved easily.

* Art can easily be insured.

* The TGG team can use art to make your properties look more sophisticated, increase your asset’s sustainability and advise you on building a collection. You will be surprised by the Timeless result.

The creative process is one that many have tried to theorise about, intellectualise, understand and even ‘bottle’ as though it were a product that could be sold on to those struggling with their own creative

development. Many great minds have tried to analyse how our brains create from the knowledge we possess, before attempting to come up with an idea for the final product, whether it is a concept, a poem, a song or a painting, or something tangible

like the invention of a new piece of technology.

Many believe that this process is a four stage event:

Stage 01: Preparation - the foundations, where you learn lots in order to have the information in your brain to form the ideas in the first place. This is the planning stage that sets the creative wheel in motion.

Stage 02: Incubation - it is widely believed that by trying hard to create you actually achieve the opposite and that focusing too much can be counter productive. By taking time out and not thinking about whatever it is you are trying to create, often you accidentally come up with the best idea/solution without even trying. Many people distract themselves by going for a walk or doing something else that occupies the body and mind. If you force it, you ultimately become quite stressed, which totally inhibits your natural creativity and research shows that letting your mind wander produces much better results.

EUREKAMOMENT!

Page 121: Society Marbella April 2016

HOME COUTURE

121

Stage 03: Intimation - the moment you get a positive feeling that the idea is on its way and you’re almost there, encouraging you to go on.

Stage 04: Illumination - also known as the “Eureka!” moment. It’s the moment when you realise that you have stumbled upon something brilliant and that one idea outshines all the rest.

Stage 04*(part 2): Verification - whilst it may appear that the end stage of finding the perfect idea has already happened, there may be some tweaking required. Take the iPhone, for example. The tasks this phone is capable of are infinitely impressive to those of us who use them, but if the exterior packaging or slick advertising campaigns weren’t there to back it up would as many of us want one?

Many of us can identify with the ‘self-attack’ that comes when trying to create something brilliant.

Page 122: Society Marbella April 2016

HOME COUTURE

122

The stages of the creative process have also been successfully mocked by a slightly different way of looking at the series of events that many are familiar with: 1. This is awesome! 2. This is difficult. 3. This is terrible. 4. I am terrible. 5. This might actually be ok.6. This is awesome!

It’s funny, but it’s true, and many of us can identify with the ‘self-attack’ that comes when trying to create something brilliant. Naturally, your ego has to be involved; in order to create something great we are sort of admitting that we are capable of greatness, which is a sentiment that doesn’t come easily to creative people, hence stages 3 and 4 of the aforementioned process.

Many artists and writers who struggle to create the perfect masterpiece set themselves a daily task to create just one painting/drawing/sentence. That way you have to create whether you like it or not, and by forcing yourself even when you don’t want to, it becomes less your fault when what you create is terrible. You can justify it by thinking “I didn’t really feel like doing it today anyway…”

Eventually, you push past the pain of creating something you don’t really like and find one day that you have created something you do.

but because you had to, you did. Eventually, you push past the pain of creating something you don’t really like and find one day that you have created something you do. With all this stress and emotion, how can you become really good at creating? What if it’s your job to create daily, on demand?

The act of creating is ultimately limitless, which ironically can be one of its biggest problems. It works in mysterious ways and can be painfully hard to control. It is also ethereal and unpredictable; it’s a friend who is nowhere to be seen in your greatest hour of need, but when you’re trying to sleep at 3am there they are, insistently throwing stones at your window, offering you 1001 ideas at once.

At least at FOC we are not usually given a limitless brief. We have a client to consider, the age and style of the property, the use of the property and, perhaps most importantly, the budget. Being experienced designers, it is not the start of the design that can be tricky - we are already seeing fabrics, wallpapers and furniture in our mind’s eye when first stepping across the threshold - it’s somewhere near the end of the design, when the finish line is in sight that we notice something just doesn’t feel right.

What experience has taught us is that there is no shame in bouncing ideas off each other, or being bold enough to change something that we thought we wanted to keep so that other concepts can be introduced. One of the most important things to learn is to be brutal with yourself. If you find yourself spending too long looking for the perfect lamp, it’s time to change something else, at which point you realise that one of the many lamps you had already seen now works perfectly with the scheme and you can see it all coming together.

So, how can we aid creativity? Neuroscientists have identified a few character traits that creatives have in common. For example they are very observant, they work the hours that work for them rather than the regular 9-5, they take time to be alone, they seek out new experiences and take risks, they lose track of time and they daydream often. If a lot of these attributes sound like things you were told not to do as a child and you have neglected your creative side, then perhaps it’s time to re-familiarise yourself with them! This doesn’t mean swapping your brogues for flip-flops, growing your facial hair long enough to braid and calling the beach “the office”, but there is a lot to be said for simply taking time for yourself, wandering around your own mind and focusing on the process, not the product. Creativity is stressful, beautiful, it’s up and it’s down, it’s curious, it’s imperfect but most importantly, it’s for everyone

Creativity is stressful, beautiful, it’s up and it’s down, it’s curious, it’s imperfect but most

importantly, it’s for everyone.

There are many natural forms of sugar out there some ‘sugar free’ baking recipes could lead you to believe these options are 100% healthy just because they are natural. However, until the last few hundred years, sweet foods were a luxury and our access to them was usually dictated by the seasons, as we didn’t have refrigeration or preserving techniques now available to us. The fruiting season was short and honey was rare. It is estimated that by the time a child is 8 years old today, they will have consumed as much sugar as an adult did in their entire lifetime 100 years ago.

All forms of natural sugar (honey, maple syrup, fruit, coconut nectar, date puree, raw sugar), impact blood glucose levels to some extent and lead to the release of insulin. The hormone insulin instructs the body to move glucose from the bloodstream and into the

cells where it is either used for energy or converted into fat for storage. No matter how natural or nutrient rich a sugar may be, the body responds in much the same way. For this reason, all sugars should be used in moderation, regardless of their source.

Low calorie ‘natural’ sweeteners (such as stevia or wood alcohols such as xylitol sometimes made out of birch) are a bit of a cop out – they aren’t quite as harmless as you might think. By all means, use them now and then for a treat but regular use of these sweeteners will continue to encourage your taste buds to want more sugar. To beat sugar cravings and take control of your blood sugars, you really want to take a break from all sweeteners, to allow your taste buds, and brain, to adjust. Also, recent research has demonstrated if the taste buds and mind are receiving signals to suggest sweet food is

being eaten, the body prepares for an influx of glucose.

This means that the body does in fact trigger a range of hormonal and metabolic responses ready to manage a blood sugar increase, even though with low calorie sweeteners, the sugar never comes. So you still end up with some of the metabolic consequences of eating sugar anyhow. This may go some way to explain why low calorie drinks and products don’t seem to have the positive impact on obesity that people had expected.

My preference is always to eat real food so no surprise that my recommendation is to use ‘natural sugar´s, but in moderation. Below is a list of natural sugars and sweeteners roughly ranked in my order of preference but different recipes or situations may lead me to use a sweetener that might not be suited to another occasion.

SUGAR IS THE HOT HOT HOT TOPIC OF THIS YEAR. WITH JAMIE OLIVER PIONEERING HIS INFORMATIVE DOCUMENTARY LAST YEAR, SUGAR HAS BEEN THE SUBJECT OF MANY DISCUSSIONS.

LETS TRY AND DEBUNK SOME OF THE CLAIMS AND GET TO THE CORE OF WETHER TO SUGAR OR NOT TO SUGAR.

Maple Syrup:What is it: maple syrup is the concentrated sap of the Canadian maple tree. It is lower calorie and fructose content than honey and a GI rating of 54.

Honey:What is it: honey is made from bees out of nectar gathered from flowers to feed the hive. Raw honey has more nutrition and health benefits than more highly processed products. GI of 50, and is roughly 50% fructose (a 50:50 ratio of fructose to glucose is easier for the body to metabolise than a higher fructose content product).

Xylitol / Sorbitol / Mannitol:What is it: wood alcohols which can be derived from the fibre of many types of plants such as oats, mushrooms, corn and raspberries. They aren’t a sweetener that I use or recommend but it may be a useful option for some people, including diabetics who may only be able to use natural sugar options sparingly.

Stevia:What is it: is a protein found naturally in the stevia plant grown in Peru, which stimulates the sweet receptors on the tongue. Product varies from whole leaf (green) powders through to highly processed white sugar replacements which are mixed with other excipients so that 1tsp stevia – 1 tsp of sugar (such as Truvia).

Agave Syrup:What is it: Agave is a cactus which grows in Latin America and the syrup is made from the pulp of the cactus leaf. Although agave syrup was used traditionally by native Americans, that ingredient bears little resemblance to the agave syrup we find on the shelves today.

Brown Rice Syrup:What is it: high glucose syrup derived from fermented cooked rice.

Palmyra Jaggery Palmyra Jaggery is the crystallised nectar collected from the flower of the Palmyra palm, grown in Sri Lanka and India.

Coconut Nectar/Coconut Sugar What is it: is the crystallised nectar collected from the flower of the coconut palm or crystallised in the form of brown small granules.Fruit Purees -What is it: use fruit instead of sugar in recipes. A mashed ripe banana, a few dates or apple sauce or pears for example.

INGREDIENTS

1 cup of Nut milk (240 grams)

2 tbs of chia seeds

1 tbs of flax

Pinch of cinnamon/cardamon & clove (spice mix see basics)

Splash of agave

1 tbs of almond flakes

1 tbs of raisins

Fruit of choice to top off

Mayans prized them for their ability to provide sustainable energy… in fact, “chia” is the ancient Mayan word for

“strength.”

Chia seeds are among the healthiest foods on the planet. They are loaded with nutrients that can have important

benefits for your body and brain. Protein, fibre, omega 3’s amongst other things!

METHOD

This is a super easy recipe that can be made in bigger batches and made the day before! It is a fantastic travel food that keeps you fuller for longer. Here is one of many

versions that I love.

Mix all of the ingredients in a mixing bowl, except the fruits used to top it off. Set aside or store in the fridge. You need to give the seeds time to absorb all the liquids and get a rice pudding like texture, leave for about 20-30 minutes.

Portion out in cups, glasses or mason jars (that are so chic

right now). If you make more than one portion store in fridge until you want to eat and enjoy.

Have we mentioned lately how much we love eating at La Sala? Well, yes – probably a few thousand

times by now, but the food there is too good to resist and if we didn’t pass on the latest news we wouldn’t be doing our job properly, would we?

One of the marks of a great café/restaurant is its willingness to ring the changes, so the La Sala team now offers three great new main courses that are certain to become favourites.

The succulent shredded Braised Lamb Shank in a Red Wine Jus is served with fresh Asparagus Tips, Roasted Vine Tomatoes and Creamed Mashed Potatoes and, apart from being totally delicious, is a real visual treat. If you’re one of those people who loves to post pictures of meals on Instagram then you will be in heaven, because this looks like a food bouquet. Is there such a thing? Well, there is now.

Thai cuisine has become something of a foodie phenomenon over the past decade or two and, with more and more holidaymakers travelling to this beautiful country, the demand for Thai dishes has increased. La Sala’s Pad Thai is a classic: pieces of Chicken or Vegetables cooked with Noodles and imbued with all the wonderful Thai flavours that you would expect from such a dish.

There are burgers - and then there are La Sala burgers. These are always a popular choice, so the challenge for the team was to create something that not only met expectations but exceeded them; not so easy. Have they delivered? Of course they have! The La Sala Fillet Steak Burger is a burger, Jim – but not as we know it. A gorgeous chunk of Beef served with Grilled Bacon, Melted Cheese and half a Lobster Thermidor (did we mention that it’s worth forgoing breakfast to enjoy this treat?) Oh, and don’t forget to make room for the Hand Cut Fries, Coleslaw, Crispy Onion Rings and Smoked Jalapeño Mayonnaise.

La Sala is busy at all times of the year but you can guarantee that these new dishes will ensure that the tables are filled to capacity throughout the seasons. If you haven’t yet enjoyed the La Sala experience, then this provides the perfect opportunity.

WINEFEATUREof the month

Our expert wine connoisseur Julio from D-Wine joins us once again with a tasty combination of vibrant Verdejo and the finest wild fish.

COSTA CUISINE

Verdejo is a native grape of Rueda, north-west Spain, in the province of Valladolid; the grape is cultivat-ed in high altitude vineyards where the soils are calcareous and well drained. Barrel fermented Verdejo

wines are crisp with soft, creamy, nutty overtones and, sometimes, accompanied by citrus notes and smoke. This ancient grape is arguably Spain’s finest white grape variety along with Albarino from Galicia.

When it comes to fish, we try to maintain the highest standards possible and therefore source only the finest wild fish available. Fresh Turbot, Seabass, Gilthead Bream, Snapper and others from the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts arrive at D-Wine to be part of the specials we offer in our weekly menu.

Vibrant Verdejo & Wild Fish

Each fish is hand-selected to our specifications, expertly prepared by being simply grilled, oven-baked or elegantly salted, according to the client´s preference by our executive chef. At D-Wine delectable fresh dishes can be enjoyed in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere and our superb wild fish specials make every meal a spectacular dining experience.

The freshness and balance of the wine, the creaminess and fruity nuances of green apple, citrus and tropical fruit notes teamed with white blossom, aromatic herbs and fennel, plus a final hint of orange peel will perfectly com-plement the succulence of the baked Turbot or Snapper, the classicism of the salt-coated Seabass or mellowness of the grilled Gilthead Sea Bream we served every week at D-Wine.

The English Football Club Middlesbrough were spotted dining at La Sala Banus last Friday 19th March after almost a weeklong training camp in Marbella.!Aitor Karanka and his 23-man squad jetted off from Leeds Bradford Airport for a week of warm weather training on the sunny coast. For the team dinner, the footballers opted for the celebrity hot spot La Sala, Puerto Banús. Besides dining, they enjoyed the amazing Friday Night Jukebox with the Jackie Brown Band. The head coach Karanka explained that Boro’s trip to Spain was more about team bonding than it was working on the training pitch.

Middlesbrough F.C dining in La Sala!“I was thinking of going to Spain because sometimes it’s difficult to work here when it’s raining or windy,” said Karanka. “I told the players when we arrived there that the trip was more than just working on the pitch. It was about being together in the hotel, to spend a few hours together. We’ve had a few changes last month and I think it was good for us.”

Middlesbrough is not the only football club that chose La Sala for a relaxing night out during their winter training camp in Marbella. The Swiss Football Club Basel 1893, widely known as FC Basel or just Basel, were also spotted enjoying La Sala last month.La Sala Restaurant has truly become, ‘The ultimate social and dining

We were delighted to hear that our friends at Finca Cortesin recently won a brace of awards at ITB Berlin 2016.

The prestigious Connoisseur’s Circle Awards were awarded during the convention and the Finca Cortesin team was thrilled by the news that it had won Best Hospitality Boutique Hotel 2016.

General Manager of Finca Cortesin, René Zimmer, comments: “We are thrilled that Finca Cortesin was recognised as the leading Boutique Hotel in these esteemed awards, in particular during an event as important ITB Berlin. It is a true testament to Finca Cortesin’s commitment to surpassing guests’ expectations during each and every stay.”

Finca Cortesin was also triumphant in the Klocke Verlag Hideaways Awards, voted for by readers of the popular German travel magazine, Hideaways. Since 1996, the readers of Hideaways vote annually for their favourite ‘hideaways’ based on their own travel experiences, also taking architecture, design and service elements into account. These respected awards are distributed at an exclusive reception ceremony during ITB Berlin each year, which is attended

by the crème de la crème of the hospitality industry. “For all the team at Finca Cortesin, the property is a very special ‘hideaway’ and we are proud to be sharing Spain’s best kept secret with our guests,” continues René Zimmer; “It is an honour that Finca Cortesin still occupies a top position in the Hideaways’ Reader Survey, and was recognised this week as Hideaway of the Year 2015.”

The SOCIETY team rates Finca Cortesin as one of its favourite places and, with a wonderful location in the hills near Casares, its fabulous five-star facilities and dedication to haute cuisine we can’t think of a better place to book in for a weekend break – or much longer.

No wonder this beautiful hotel keeps winning prizes.

The inaugural Barking Mad Fundraiser took place on 3rd March 2016 at the Estrella del Mar Beach Club in Marbella.

The event was a resounding success with over 60 guests in attendance and a night of fine food and fabulous entertainment by the amazing 2True. The event was held to raise funds for not just one charity but five of the animal rescue centres here on the Costa del Sol - Fidelio Benalmadena, F.A.M.A, Rescued Paws, Alegria Aid & 4Paws Adoptions. The goal amount to be raised was set at 1000€, but this amount was squashed with the total donations from the night coming in at over 1400€.

Funds raised from the event will be used to purchase the items needed most by each of the shelters, meaning anyone that donated to the cause can see exactly where their money has been spent.

To keep updated on our donations and future events, please follow us on Facebook and Twitter:

BEAUTY AND BEYONDThe Laura García Beauty Salon combines all your beauty needs under one roof.

Laura García (formally located within Cru Hair Salon) has opened her new beauty salon close to Sisu Boutique Hotel. With nearly 20 years experience she offers all the traditional beauty therapies you know and love, as well as the latest high tech treatments, in an elegant environment at competitive prices. This beauty spot is clearly a labour of love where you can enjoy treatments such as an anti-ageing Phytomer facial or a invigorating body scrub using leading skincare ranges, a Jessica Geleration semi-permanent manicure or even a medical pedicure. Laura has a long-standing reputation for her warm and attentive personality and, of course, her quality of service. Her manicures and pedicures are hugely popular - clients leave with neat cuticles and perfectly-shaped nails.

With her deft handiwork Laura is the queen bee of brows (a certain member of the

Society Marbella team won’t let anyone else but Laura touch her brows!) Laura tames unruly brows with her bespoke brow service, giving you the perfect arch you have always wanted. She is also renowned for her waxing. Always wanted to try a Hollywood Wax but been too scared? Laura makes every aspect of your treatment as painless as possible but, please note, she is extremely meticulous, so expect the most minuscule of stragglers to be whipped out of sight.

Once you have tried it, there is no going back, so be warned.

In need of a little TLC? Laura’s expert neck and shoulders massage with oils will leave you knot-free, relaxed and even a little spaced out.

Whatever treatment you decide on you can be sure to enjoy the very best that beauty therapy has to offer.

Local salons don’t get friendlier - or more professional - than this.
