One we liked quite a bit was a trip to Hershey, Pennsyl- vania. It was fun for all ages and we looked forward to those free candies when we climbed from the little boats, which ferried us via the route that showed every step of candy production. One day, as we left the sweet aroma of chocolate, we found beautiful sunshine outside, just beckoning us to do something else before we headed back to the traffic of crowded highways. I had a suggestion. I decided to just spring it and see if it would fly. “I don’t think I told you about the discussion at Bridge Club a couple of weeks ago. Sara had been to a place, which she sug- gested we should all try if we were in the area. Well, we are in the area she mentioned, with time to spare for another adventure, so let me tell you about her experience.” I went on to tell about a place not far from Hershey where she and a lady friend had come to enjoy the spa and the baths of this facility. I quickly added that we didn’t have to take the Health Route, but they had another experience, which she highly recommended. I described how there were people who lived at the beautiful old stone hotel who gave readings to predict your future and tell you how to interpret the events in your past. Finally, it was agreed upon that we would find the place on our car map and head for the location. With my husband insisting at every turn that this was foolish, he certainly was not going to have any part of a group of people who lived in a big stone house and told fortunes. He said I could waste my money if I chose, but he would contribute nothing to this poppycock! As we got closer, I hoped to see a sign explaining about this place, but no advertisements were to be seen. This made it all the more enticing to me, as if we had found something not on the main road. When we found the hotel, we drove through the archway that separated us from the outside world. We followed a little farther and came upon a white cottage. There were parking places in front of the strange little building, but no cars except ours filled one of the spaces. As we got out and walked toward the two ladies, they rose to meet us with these words, “Are you the Taylors? We’ve been expecting you.” John (Taylor), my husband, looked at me, and his face had lost almost all of the sunshine of the day. He began to look pale and a little fearful. He quickly whispered to me… “I don’t care what it costs. Go ahead and pay the ladies. I’ll wait out here with Trent.” When I climbed the steps, I took the lady’s hand and followed her into an old fashioned small parlor. She took one chair and I took the other. She began to talk. April 4, 2012 THE NEWS-JOURNAL Raeford, N.C 3B

Lilmar(Continued from page 1B)had given her without realizing it— maybe there was something in the car that marked my profession.

She pulled her chair closer and told me many things. She even giggled a little at the thought of my husband being fearful of two “old ladies” when he was so young and strong. Nothing had been mentioned about his reluctance to take this venture either.

On and on she went, but this is the one thing she divulged that brings me to the place of explaining something she told me, almost in a whisper…“You have healing powers. The pow-ers come to you in your deep sleep through your hands and your head. Don’t sleep with bobby pins in your hair,” and as she fingered my rings and twisted them on my fingers, she added, “and never sleep with your rings on at night. Your healing powers are very strong.”

I thought of the many times I had awakened to find my rings loose and in my sheets in the morning instead of on my fingers as I wore them when I went to bed. That and other things she said have come to fruition, except her strong prediction that I will not have the same job for my entire life.

Many of you know of how many times cancer has stricken my body. I have had three types, all different. I went for my ap-pointment with my oncologist Monday. No sign of new cancer at this point! And I hear, just as if it were yesterday, the prediction from the little lips of the little lady in Ephrata, “You have heal-ing powers!”

Then the memories return—the many times I have touched the parts of my body where the cancers once lived and both prayed and wished them away. Could it be that I do have some of this healing within my body?

And now, about that finding another way to support myself be-sides teaching that she mentioned. Maybe I should finish that novel I’m working on. That just might be the magic funds she spoke of so assuredly almost 40 years ago.

Gotta get this finished so I can work on my book!

The author may be emailed at [email protected]. Type “Mirror” on the subject line.

We have received several calls/complaints about kudzu bugs covering and invading buildings. If you haven’t heard about the kudzu bug, you will this year. The bugs have been passing the winter in various locations both indoors and outside and are now gearing up for a new season. This is another example of the serious problems that confront us with invasive species, with this par-ticular one coming from Asia. Most people are familiar with the Asian lady beetle, which is a well-documented nuisance to homeowners and businesses, but is beneficial in that it eats other insects. In the case of the kudzu bug, although it does eat kudzu, it likes to dine on important field crops like soybeans. Dominic Reisig and Jack Bacheler in the North Carolina State University Entomology Department are working on that aspect of the kudzu invasion. If you want to see an example of how high the numbers can reach in soybeans, go to this video clip: http://video.

bugwood.org/browse/detail.cfm?vidnum=00000048

On the residential/industrial side of things, you will probably want a solution to the kudzu bug. Unfortunately, this is another case where you’re not going to be very happy. First, the pesticides that are available to consumers are simply not going to have the type of residual activity needed to have an impact on the bugs. Second, and perhaps more im-portantly, most people simply do not have the equipment or skills needed to treat the exterior of their homes. Applying pesticides solely around the windows and doors is unlikely to stop the invasion. Trying to treat higher areas of the house like the sof-fits, fascia and siding poses a hazard of pesticide drift down and out from the house. Spraying Millions of kudzu bugs infest a field in a video cited by the author.

You’re not going to like the kudzu bug

over your head may land some chemical on structural surfaces; however, much of the pesticide material is going to drop back down on you, the applicator.

If you choose to spray outside, then you should select a wettable powder formulation over a liquid formulation, particularly over a pre-mixed ready-to-use prod-uct. There are no products on the market right now that have kudzu bugs specifically listed on the label and I doubt we will see that labeling in the immediate future. Treating about 2-3 feet up the foundation and around the

windows and doors should be their primary focus; however, it probably will not help as much as you hope. If you choose to spray overhead areas, look around the property first and make sure to a) cover or remove children’s toys, barbecue grills, pet food/water, etc., b) keep children and pets away from the area *while* you are spraying and also until treated surfaces dry, and c) wear protective clothing: a hat, goggles, gloves, long-sleeved shirt and long pants, and try to position yourselves upwind as much as possible.

For additional information on the kudzu bug for homeowners, you may want to visit: http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/ent/notes/Urban/kudzubug.htm or for more information on kudzu bugs in soybeans:
