there was so me simila rity between al l religions in Joseo n dynasty. For

example, some people still believed restrain ed B uddhism and others in

rural areas also maintained shamanism , but Joseon Dynasty encouraged

Confuc ianism as the social regulation. Therefore, many Korean Confucianschools and large libraries were built during those days and they also had

foreign educated scholars. Thus by the time of King Sejong (ruled from 1418

to 14 50), all fields of learning were originated from the thought of

Confucianism. Confucianism in Joseon thrived r emarkably i n the 16th

century. In Confucianism, human beings are teachable, progressive and

perfectible through personal and collective endeavor. A main idea of

Confucianism is the development of virtue and moral perfection.

Confucianism belief is that people should give up their life, either passively

or actively, for the sake of upholding the prime ethical values. The most

important ceremonies of Confucianism were the coming of age, marriage,

death, and the anniversary of the death of the ancestors. Funerals had the

greatest influence on the lives of common people. Although Confucianism is

no longer the ruling ideology, its influence still shows in current Korean

    Society.

Two most prominent Confucian scholars, Yi Hwang (15011570)

    and Yi I (15361584)

They are often referred to by their pen names, Yi Hwang as Toe gye and Yi I

as Yul g ok. Yi Hwang established the Yeongnam School and set up theDosan Seowon , a private Confucian academy. However, Yi I is n ot only

known as a scholar but also as a well-re garded politician and reformer. Yi I

did not completely agree with the dualistic Neo-Confucianism teachings

followed by Yi Hwang . His school of Neo-Confucianism emphasize on the

    Jeoseon Wars

    Japanese Invasions of Korea ( , )(1592-1598)

The two Japanese Invasions of Korea took place in Joseon from 1592

to 1598. Japanese general Toyotomi Hideyoshi let the unified Japanese

Army for the first invasion (1592-1593) with the professed goal of

conquering Korea. The second invasion (1594-1596) was more fierceinvasion. The invasions are also known as Hideyoshis invasions of Korea,

the Seven Year War, or the Imjin War. Even though Hideyoshis navy force

had 2,000 ships (counting assault ships), It couldnt defeat the Korean navy

that was led my the Korean Admiral Yi/Lee Sun-sin. The Korean navys

main assault ship Turtle Ship successfully took out the Japanese navy. The

Japanese Invasions of Korea were the huge events of Joesun. Also they

    The Turtle Ship

The Turtle Ship (or Geobukseon, ) was a huge warship that was

used by the Royal Korean Navy during the Joseon Dynasty from the early

15th century up until the 19th century. Turtle ships allowed the Korean

Navy to defeat numerous battles and wars. While Japanese Invasions of

Korean, the Korean Navy could defeat the Japanese navy by using Turtle

ships. Korean admiral Yi Sun-sin is credited with designing the ship. The

length of the Turtle ships were approximately 100 to 120 feet. They could

Second Manchu Invasion of Korea ( )

The Second Manchu Invasion of Korea occurred in 1636, when the Manchu

Qing Empire brought Koreas Joseon Dynasty into submission. Huang Taijiled Manchu, Mongol, and Chinese Banners and Mongol army of 120,000 to

Korea. King Injo (king of Korea) escaped to Ganghwa (it was a tradition to

escape to Ganghwa Island). King Injo took refuge in the Namhansan

fortress, which was immediately surrounded by Manchu Army. The siege

continued and Ming China (alley of Joseon)s help couldnt reach to

Ganghwa Island. The scarcity of food worsened. King Injo decided to hold

up the white flag to Manchu Army and agreed to the terms of peace:

    1. Korea submits to the Qing Dynasty.

    2. Korea breaks away with the suzerain Ming.

    3. Korea offers the first and second sons of King Injo, and sons or brothers

    of ministers as hostages.

    4. Korea pays tribute to Qing as she has done to Ming.

    5. Korea will serve in the war against Ming.

    6. Korea offers army and ships to attack an island.

    7. Qing does not allow Korea to build castles without restraint.

    Downfall of JoseonJapanKorea Treaty

The Japan-Korea treaty was made between representatives of Japan

Empire and Korean Empire in 1876. Negotiations were concluded on February

26, 1876. This negotiation was about

Assented Korean EmpressEmpress Myeong Seong, were very smart, so Japan had hard time to

conquer Korea, so Japanese assented the Empress Myeong Seong. We call

that situation, The Eulmi Incident. She died at October 8, 1895.

Decline of KoreaAfter the signing of the Protectorate in 1905 because Joseon is too weak toprotect their country from Japan and China. Japan had strong weapons, likeries; however Korea did not have any strong weapons. Korea became aprotectorate of Japan. Ito Hirobumi was the rst Resident-General of Korea, although he was assassinated by Korean Independence activist An Jung geon in1909 at the train station at Harbin. In 1910, although many Koreans opposed theannexation, the Japanese empire merged Korea by force.
