Today’s Lesson

• Have you ever wondered why you are required to study events that happened before you were born or about places and people which you have never seen.? You are not alone!

• Today we will talk about– What is social studies

– Why social studies matters

– How and what we will learn in social studies

• What is a detective? What do they do?

• You are all now Jr. Detectives. What do you think you’ll be doing today?

It’s a Mystery!

• Studying history is like being a detective. Detectives ask questions, interview, examine, and, well, detect in order to solve a problem or find an answer.

• You’ll be looking at pictures to discover what is “Social Studies” and to learn what we’ll be learning this year.

Your Mission

• Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to discover just what we study when we are talking about “social studies.”

• Asking questions is the best place to start.

• We’ll be looking at pictures today. When you examine a picture, you want to ask yourself the following question.– What am I looking at?

– How is this related to our class?

– What could I learn from and about this picture?

HISTORY!

• Social Studies includes learning about history.

• History means people, places, events, etc. of the past.

• When we study the past we look at facts and try not to guess or assume.

• The best way to learn about the past is from those who were there, also known as eye witnesses! This is called “primary source” learning.

• Economics plays an important role in how we live our lives and how we operate in our communities.
