If you are like most Americans, you probably dont think much about

the quality of the water each time you fill your glass (unless a severe

storm hit and you get one of those boil water notices...ugh!). We sort

of take for granted that there are many laws in place to safeguard the

quality of our public water. Unfortunately, the statistics show that

many people around the world do not have these safeguards for a

wide variety of reasons. In fact, the United Nations estimates thatover 40% of the worlds 7 billion people do not have regular access to

safe and/or reliable water resources. With another 2 billion people

expected to add to the population by 2050, there is growing concern

over water. It is one of the reasons World Water Day was started years

ago. Check out the resources in the newsletter and on Blackboard to

highlight World Water Day this March 22nd.

Of course, March is also Womens History Month. The theme this year

challenges us to examine the role education has played in empower-

ing women over the years. I hope you can think of some ways to high-

light the theme over the course of the month. Why not have a school

bulletin board dedicated to highlighting where all of the women on

    staff were educated!

    Howcanyouhelpstudentsbegintounderstandthesignificanceofcleanwateraccess?

You can find this game from the FAO on Blackboard.

Warning: The game is in liters so you will need to do some conversions!

Do you ever get a free glass of water when youare eating at your favorite restaurant? Wouldyou pay $1 for one day if you knew the moneywas going to a good cause? If you answered yesto either question, consider checking out theTap Project. The UNICEF Tap Project proceedsgo towards improving sanitation Better yet, askyour favorite restaurant to participate in thiseasy and informative national event to promoteawareness of the growing concerns about water.

The Dining Room at the Berkeley Hotel on EastCary is the only Richmond area restaurant

    currently listed as a participant.

    Information From UNICEF

Every day 4,100 children die ofwater-related

diseases. Nearly 900 million people world-

wide lack access to safe drinking water.

Just $1 raised through the UNICEF Tap

Project can provide a child with safe water

    for 40 days.

The simple act of washing a childs face with

clean water can prevent debilitating disease

like blinding trachoma, an infectious eye

disease that spreads from child to child.
