Social Sciences and Humanities Electives for Civil Engineering 2019-2020 Catalog Requirements Students in the civil engineering (CE) program must take at least 12 credits of social sciences and humanities (SSH) electives satisfying the following requirements: At least 3 credits must be designated as International Perspectives (IP) course on the following list (marked with 1 ). At least 3 credits must come from the University’s list of U.S. Diversity (USD) courses. The remaining courses must come from the courses below or USD courses. At least 6 credits must be at the 200 level or above. The total must be at least 12 credits even if either the IP or USD requirement is waived. Rationale The SSH requirement aims to give CE students an opportunity to broaden their perspectives beyond what the math, science, and engineering courses can provide. For example, ABET, the organization that accredits engineering programs, requires that students have “the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context”. The CE program believes that students with such a broad education will be better engineers. In 2016 the CE Curriculum Committee approved the following: Foreign Language: Accept all courses in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Latin, Russian, Spanish, except grammar and composition in the students native language(s). Social Sciences and Humanities Electives for Civil Engineering

2019-2020 Catalog

Requirements

Students in the civil engineering (CE) program must take at least 12 credits of social sciences and

humanities (SSH) electives satisfying the following requirements:

At least 3 credits must be designated as International Perspectives (IP) course on the following

list (marked with 1).

At least 3 credits must come from the University’s list of U.S. Diversity (USD) courses.

The remaining courses must come from the courses below or USD courses.

At least 6 credits must be at the 200 level or above.

The total must be at least 12 credits even if either the IP or USD requirement is waived.

Rationale

The SSH requirement aims to give CE students an opportunity to broaden their perspectives beyond what

the math, science, and engineering courses can provide. For example, ABET, the organization that

accredits engineering programs, requires that students have “the broad education necessary to understand

the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context”. The CE

program believes that students with such a broad education will be better engineers.

In 2016 the CE Curriculum Committee approved the following: “Foreign Language: Accept all courses

in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Latin, Russian, Spanish, except grammar and composition in

the student’s native language(s)”.

Other approved courses

Be sure to check the 2019-2020 Catalog for prerequisites.
