• Since 1938, the Church has been a

proactive voice in the use of modern

communications technology.

• Since Vatican II, Church’s contribution on

the subject of communications media and

social networking ongoing.

What does the Church have to say

about Social Networking?

Page 26: Social Networking

Among the wonderful technological discoveries which men of talent, especially

in the present era, have made with God's help, the Church welcomes and

promotes with special interest those which have a most direct relation to men's

minds and which have uncovered new avenues of communicating most readily

news, views and teachings of every sort. The most important of these

inventions are those media which, such as the press, movies, radio, television

and the like, can, of their very nature, reach and influence, not only individuals,

but the very masses and the whole of human society, and thus can rightly be

called the media of social communication. (Introduction #1)

Page 27: Social Networking

It is an ever more commonly held opinion that, just as the Industrial

Revolution in its day brought about a profound transformation in society

by the modifications it introduced into the cycles of production and the

lives of workers, so today the radical changes taking place in

communications are guiding significant cultural and social

developments. The new technologies are not only changing the way we

communicate, but communication itself, so much so that it could be

said that we are living through a period of vast cultural transformation.

This means of spreading information and knowledge is giving birth to a

new way of learning and thinking, with unprecedented opportunities for

establishing relationships and building fellowship. (Paragraph #1)

What can you learn as you compare the business example with

the church example?

Scenario 1:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/St-Brigid-

Youth-Ministry/246609370781

St. Brigid’s Youth Ministry, based in San

Antonio, Texas goals are:

-To empower young people to live as

disciples of Jesus Christ.

-To draw young people to be responsible

participation in the life, mission, and work

of the Catholic Faith community.

-To foster the total personal and spiritual

growth of each youth

Many of the “wall” entries highlight photo’s

from YM events. On occasion, the YM

asks questions or announces events.

Is this a “participatory” model? How could

interaction be improved?

Tricia Mumby, one of the company’s co-

founders, says that Facebook has been a

terrific way to develop new ideas by

tapping user suggestions. Mabel’s Labels,

which has nearly 20,000 Facebook fans,

also announces any specials or new

products through the company’s

Facebook page. According to Mumby,

Facebook is the third largest referring

website, just below direct visits and

Google, and 11 percent of the site’s total

traffic comes from Facebook, while two

percent of sales comes from the Facebook

Fan page.
