What is social media?

Why should you be interested in social media?
• Young people are using it - 91% of 16-24 years old used Twitter or Facebook in 2011 (Internet Access,
Households and individuals, 2011, ONS Statistical Bulletin, 31 August 2011).
We can offer support with the digital literacy skills needed.
• Employers and training providers are using social media as recruitment tools.
• Professional networking. Access to a larger body of professional contacts and knowledge.
What’s digital literacy?
‘The ability to use digital technology, communication tools or networks to locate, evaluate, use and create information.’(Ministry for Economic Development, New Zealand)
How?
• Guiding young people to reliable sources of online information and giving them the skills to evaluate them.
• Online branding- helping them present themselves appropriately on the web.
• Communicating with young people through social media sites.
• Helping them be safe online.

Top Tips
• You need to start using social media to get any benefit from it.
• Once on social media keep communicating. • Make sure people know that you are there. Add
your account addresses to your email signature. • Be sure to add information to your bio. People
won’t follow unless they know something about who they are communicating with.
• Don’t expect to be able to keep track of every message you receive or everyone you follow.
