Shell in Tanzania
Currently, Shell and its partners are working
with the Government through Tanzania
Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) to
find the most cost-effective and efficient way to
develop a multi-billion-dollar Liquefied Natural
Gas (LNG) project. LNG means taking natural
gas and cooling it from the gaseous state to
liquid form (at about -160 degrees Centigrade)
so that it can be easily transported to different
global markets. When LNG reaches its
destination, LNG is turned back into gas.
The Tanzania LNG project is at the foundation
stage requiring multiple agreements between
the International Oil and Gas Companies
(IOCs) and the Government.
As Tanzania strives to become a middle-
income nation with an industry-driven economy
by 2025, the integrated gas and LNG project
will be an important vehicle to support the
country to achieve this vision. Once this
ambitious scheme begins production, the
country will see immense benefits.
Over $2 billion invested
18 wells drilled, 16 TCF of Natural Gas discovered
Shell’s activities in Tanzania began in the 1930’s with fuels and lubricants as the main business. In 2016, the company expanded its presence through the BG Shell combination as operator, of two offshore blocks (Block 1 and Block 4) in the southern region of Tanzania, together with its partners, Ophir Energy and Pavilion Energy. After extensive exploration activities in the two blocks, 18 wells were drilled, 16 Trillion Cubic Feet (TCF) of recoverable natural gas discovered, and over $2 billion invested to date.
