What have I learnt from the internship experience?

What have I learnt from the internship experience?

What have I learnt from the internship experience?

Great things are done by a series of small things brought together. Never ignore the importance of every single task. ~ Vincent van Gogh

Service Leadership Internship (SLI)

Joey Ma

What have I learnt? • Work experience

- a part of the company - to work with seniors and colleagues

• To implement a project - from zero to one - make our own decisions - work within restrictions and limitations

What have I learnt? • Teamwork skills

- collaborate with SLI parters, colleagues and supervisors

• Self-awareness - my strengths and weaknesses

Global Citizenship Internship (GCI)

Frances Liu

GC Experience • This seminar room was where we

regularly worked and you may observe our interaction in

seminar discussions

GC Experience • Permitted by the Risk Society and Policy

Research Center, we could also work in the university library

GC Experience • This classroom was where we attended

special lectures

Learning Outcomes A. How to adapt to a new culture B. How to conduct independent research C. Teamwork

Advice for Future GC Interns

Don’t overestimate your ability to overcome cultural shock

• Attend the “how to cope with cultural shock” seminar organized by the Faculty and pay attention to it

• Google some basic tips about life in your new country

• Make local friends • Refer to supervisor or other colleagues

Make full use of available resources • Partner organizations maygrant you

access to critical resources • Explore learning opportunities outside the

organization

Immerse yourself into the organization and be a good team worker

• Mutual assistance from fellow interns • Hold regular discussions and reflect on

your performance and what you have learned

• Maintain regular contact with your supervisor and other colleagues

• Enjoy life together!

The managing assistant holding an umbrella we gave her Interns, tutors and assistant dining together

Advice • Stay positive • Take the initiatives to ask for more

tasks • Do not be afraid to ask and

communicate with your colleagues • Accept any new challenges

Why should I apply for SLI? • A unique and valuable experience

• Greater authority, closer relationships

• New experiences, new perspective

Advice • Be prepared for a busy summer!

- essays, presentations, brainstorming time, even OT!!

• Challenge yourself!

How to select a CP? • Identify your academic strengths and personal

interests • Read the descriptions of the CP openings in the

big booklet carefully to check CP’s expectation • Consult with CPs face-to-face TODAY (only!) • The internship is NOT a practicum; not

necessary to link with your future career; but regard the internship as an off-classroom learning experience

Advice on Applications

Selection Procedure & Application Strategy

• CP will screen all applications and may arrange telephone/ face-to-face interview

• GPA is NOT everything here • Write a good personal statement to show your

capacity, interest and strength. • The Faculty will invite the failed applicants to have

individual consultation and select another CP to apply

• For potential second-round applications, the Personal Statement should be a general statement, DON’T indicate a single CP
