• Pinterest announced that it will begin rolling out paid advertising on their site
• Businesses will be able to use “Promoted Pins” by paying to have pins pushed to the top of results and search categories.
• During the test period they will not initially collect money from advertisers and will clearly label promoted pins as ads for all users
• Pinterest CEO says that the pins will be tasteful and there will be no pop-up ads
• The site will differentiate sponsored and organic pins
• Pinterest is experimenting with promoted pins with select businesses for now, but will roll out to more businesses in the future
Video Auto-Play Within Facebook
• Facebook has launched a test in which its mobile feed will start auto-playing user-uploaded videos when scrolled over
• Allow for News Feeds to be more engaging and open the opportunity for video advertising
• Tested on a small percent of US iOS and Android users for now
• Currently only for videos uploaded by users with verified pages, brands and musicians
• Only works for videos uploaded directly to Facebook or via Instagram (or apps of the like)
• Links to videos uploaded and embedded from other sites (YouTube, etc.) will not auto-play
• No editing features for uploading
• The video only plays when you scroll over it and will stop playing once it slips off the screen
Contents are proprietary and confidential.
Why This Matters To Your Clients:• Clearly moving in the direction of automatic playing of paid content (ads)• From an editorial POV, content being uploaded to Facebook with auto-play may increase interaction & views. The more
views / interactions, the more likely that videos will be seen in other’s news feeds• Directional change, overall – if successful, start seeing this in other networks.
