Soccer Study GuideHistorySoccer is a game that has very early origin. The Greeks played a form of soccer called Harpston, which means to "propel forward." Throwing was the most commonly used method of advancing the ball. The Romans then sent the game to England. They were the ones that limited ball advancement to kicking with the feet or striking with hands. It was a military sport for the training of warriors. The name of Football was attached because of the use of the feet in ball advancement. Soccer as we know it started on October 26, 1863, when the captains of 11 London-area amateur football clubs met at Freemason's Tavern on Great Queen Street and formed the London Football Association. The first problem the association dealt with was establishing a rule regarding the use of hands. The decision was to make it illegal. As a result, several clubs broke away and in 1871 formed the Rugby Union. The game as played by the rules of the London Football Association came to be known as association football. The word "association" was generally abbreviated as ASSOC, and from that abbreviation came the popular name for the game: soccer. Today there are 17 laws of the game. The laws of the game have two main objectives: 1) the control of the game, and 2) the protection of the players. Some form of soccer was played in American Colleges as early as 1830. At the present time, soccer is played in more than 55 countries. In most of these countries it is a national sport.
Soccer can be a great source of exercise. Soccer benefits cardiovascular endurance (the ability of the body to pump oxygenated blood throughout the body) and also muscular endurance (the ability of a muscle to complete an exercise over and over again).Skill CuesWhen Dribbling:When Passing:* Use the inside or outside of the shoe. * Use the inside or outside part of the foot* Keep your head up.* Square your hips to the ball.* Keep the ball close and in control.* Follow through towards target.* Use soft touches.
When Trapping:When Shooting:* Position whole body behind the ball. * Contact ball at the center with the laces. * Relax ankle and allow ball to come * Place non- dominate foot beside the ball. to a stop.*Land on kicking foot
Rules and Regulations1) Eleven players can field a single team with a total of twenty- two players for a regulation soccer game.2) The positions consist of forwards, who are in charge of scoring goals, midfielders, who help out both the forwards and the defenders and set up scoring opportunities for the forwards, defenders, who keep the ball clear of the goal and avoid opponents from scoring, and the goalie, who is the last line of defense and is the only one who can touch the ball with their hands on the field of play.3) Each game starts with a kickoff at midfield.4) Corner kicks are awarded when the defense kicks the ball over the endline closes to their goal.5) Goal kicks are awarded when the offense kicks the ball over the opponents endline.6) Throw- ins are awarded when the ball goes out on the sidelines to the team who didnt kick it out.7) When taking a throw- in, both feet need to remain on the ground and the ball needs to come completely behind the throwers head.8) Penalty kicks are awarded when an obstruction (handball, push, shove or trip) is committed in the penalty area, which is located in the goal box.
Important Information1) The endline is where the opening of the goal sits.2) The sideline is the line on both sides of the field.3) The goalie can only touch the ball while inside the penalty box4) Goal kicks are taken from the goal box 5) If a penalty kick is given to a team the only two people allowed inside the penalty box are the goalie and the penalty kick taker.
