THOMAS “FATS ” WALLER (May 21,1904 – December 15, 1943) was anAfrican-American jazz pianist, organist, composer and comedic entertainer. His nickname came about because heweighed nearly 300 pounds. He wasborn Thomas Wright Waller in NewYork City. Waller studied classical pianoand organ before apprenticing himselfto legendary Harlem stride pianistJames P. Johnson. Johnson introducedWaller to the world of rent parties (aparty with a piano player, designed tohelp pay the rent by charging theguests), and soon he developed a per-forming career. He was an excellent pi-anist — now considered one of the very

best who ever played in the stride style— but his songwriting, and his lovable, roguish stage personality, overshad-owed his playing. Before his solo ca-reer, he played with many performers, from Erskine Tate to Bessie Smith, buthis greatest success came with his ownfive-or six-piece combo, Fats Wallerand his Rhythm. Among his songs are,“Squeeze Me” (1919); “Ain’t Misbehavin’“ (1929); “Blue Turning Grey Over You “(1929); “Honeysuckle Rose “ (1929); “I’veGot a Feeling I’m Falling “ (1929); and“Jitterbug Waltz” (1942). He collabo-rated with the Tin Pan Alley lyricist,Andy Razaf, and had a commerciallysuccessful career. Waller made a suc-cessful tour of the British Isles in thelate 1930s and appeared in one of theearliest BBC television broadcasts. Healso appeared in several feature filmsand short subject films, most notablyStormy Weather (1943). With Razaf, hewrote, “What Did I Do (To Be So Blackand Blue)?” (1929), which became a hitfor Louis Armstrong. This song, a sear-ing treatment of racism, black andwhite, calls into question the accusa-tions of “shallow entertainment” lev-eled at both Armstrong and Waller. OnDecember 15, 1943, at age 39, Wallerdied aboard an eastbound train in thevicinity of Kansas City, Missouri, follow-ing a West Coast engagement.

erty in the early ‘20s. After Alice Tylerwas left a widow with three young chil-dren, she ran the property as a summercamp for girls. When the depressionhit, she decided to create jobs and pro-vide a future for her children by turningthe barn into a theatre. The 300-seattheatre opened on August 7, 1933 witha production called Strictly Dynamite. That initial season lasted four weeksand featured four different plays, oneof which was taken to New York. In1938, a Yale Cooperative took over. Then, on September 2, a hurricane hit.The back wall of the theatre caved inand the stage roof was blown off. Dur-ing the repairs, the theater was ex-panded to include a balcony. Thenewly enlarged theatre operatedthrough 1941 and then went dark dur-ing the war. In 1946, the theatre’s mostglamorous and star-filled periodbegan. The theatre became what is re-ferred to as a “star-system” house open-ing with a show called Dream Girl

which starred Judy Holliday. Otherheadliners who were brought in in-cluded Tallulah Bankhead, Mae West,Groucho Marx, and Marlon Brando.Following the 1958 season, the prop-erty was sold to the Bontecou family, who leased it sporadically for severalyears, and by 1966 there were plans totear down the theatre. Upon hearingthat the theatre was to be destroyed,Tommy Brent, who had previouslyworked as a publicist for the theatre, returned and saved the theater fromdemolition. His first show opened onJune 23, 1967 and he ran the theatresuccessfully for 22 years. In 1988,FourQuest Entertainment, which con-sisted of Laura Harris, (who had previ-ously worked at the theatre for 11summers), Renny Serre and RichardEricson, came on board.
