Yale-NUS Guide to Green Dorms

So you’ve got all your necessities

packed… or maybe you haven’t start-

ed yet. (In which case, you should re-

ally look here: http://studentlife.yale-

nus.edu.sg/faqs/) But those of you

who are ready to go, here are some

things you should know:

Use this list in addition to the pack-ing list provided by the Yale-NUS Dean of Students (DOS) office.

Prepared by I’dECO, the Yale-NUS Sustainability movement, this list is to get you to think about sustainabil-ity while you’re in college.

So… what are Green Packing Tips?

Coming into a completely new place often requires new stuff, which will be disposed when you leave for the sum-mer. (We speak from experience – packing up for summer was INSANE!)

But it does not have to be that case – Here’s how you can avoid that hassle!

Reduce impact by not pur-

chasing new resources.

Save money.

Reduce your baggage.

Make more friends!*

*Subject to the individual

Uh… why should I care?

+ + Conserve

water

Conserve

oil

Reduce CO2

emission

#1 Singapore has a huge second-

hand market

We don’t just mean old discs, or

vintage clothes either. From hair-

dryers to cool posters, here are

some places where you can start

your (bargain) hunts for living in

and decorating your room!

Gumtree Singapore – Singapore’s

craigslist .

Carousell (App) –Good range of

clothes, books (+textbooks!), elec-

tronics and an easy to use interface.

Bookfishing.com –Old textbooks and

second-hand novels. And you don’t

need to hit 125US$ either .

Yale-NUS for Sale or for Free –This

Facebook page can get extremely

busy, but it is a good place to find

textbooks from your seniors (cheap

textbooks WITH notes – what else

can you ask for!) You will receive

information on how to join this

group soon.

Yale-NUS flea, organised by I'dECO

– Coming fall 2015.

Fleas and thrift stores –ask your

local friends.

#2 Sharing is caring

We know there are things that you

have to purchase so here are ideas for

some things that you can share as a

suite! Note that these are not musts,

and you can share between suites:

Mini-fridges. (Note that fridges have to be registered!) Also think about where your fridge goes at the end of your aca-demic year.

Microwaves. This doesn’t have to be registered, but do think about who will babysit your microwave at the end of the year.

Ironing-boards. If you’re the sort that needs one.

Hair-dryers.

Yale-NUS college has achieved the Green mark Platinum Award from the Building and Construction Authority, (BCA) Singapore. That is the highest award for sustainable construc-tion in Singapore.

#3 Energy labels #5 You will be living in one of

the greenest buildings in Sin-

gapore

Most large electronic equipment,

should you need to purchase one,

comes with a rating sticker.

There are lots of numbers but the

general rule is this: the more ticks,

the better. The “full marks” is 5

ticks, and anything above 3 is good.

Equipment without or with 1-2

ticks don’t fare so well.

#4 Cooling

Yes. Singapore is hot.

And yes, you can pay a fee to get air conditioning in your room

BUT

The fan is really, really powerful (and if it isn’t , you should get it checked out)

You can cool off in common spaces like the library!

You can increase the tempera-ture of the air-conditioner. 25°C is always a good bet.

AND

Don’t forget to bring a water bot-tle. There are coolers all over campus and you WILL need it.

Help Yale-NUS live up to the

legacy, won’t you?
