ABOUT THE PERFORMERS

Stephanie Carreira is a second-year graduate student at the School of Information and Library Science and has been working at the Chapel Hill Public Library for three years. She has a love of owls, tacos, kids/teen books, along with all things winter (including the cold). As Albert Camus writes, “In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer.”

Michael Chen is a second-year MS in information science student. He graduated with a BS in psychology, second major in linguistics, and a minor in cognitive science from UNC-Chapel Hill. Currently, he works as an assistant to Dr. John Kasarda at Aerotropolis Business Concepts, LLC and as a research assistant at the Center for Community Capital. His hobbies include violin, rock climbing, adventures, and amateur massage, and he has a really cute orange tabby.

Sharon Kolling-Perin is a second-year graduate student at the School of Information and Library Science who is looking forward to being a school librarian after graduation in May. When not studying, Sharon prefers spending time with her husband and three sons, or cuddling up with a good book. As a native Tennessean, Sharon likes stories about winter more than winter itself.

Wick Shreve is finishing up his library degree this winter. But neither finishing up his degree nor winter itself can finish his love of books or stories.

Shannon Young is a second-year graduate student at the School of Information and Library Science. She is looking forward to becoming a children’s public librarian, and definitely prefers the “cozy” parts of winter to the snow and cold.

Dr. Brian Sturm teaches storytelling for the School of Information and Library Science. He loves exploring the concept of enchantment and how stories immerse us in story worlds. His project Story Squad (http://storysquad.org) is bringing world folktales back into schools and libraries and cultural institutions with the goal of “growing literacy and sowing enchantment, because reading begins with hearing.”

Heather Maneiro (piano/voice) is a second-year PhD student. Heather attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, as an undergraduate where she majored in elementary education and participated in the choirs (and the Christmas concert) each year. Heather is glad to have the opportunity to continue sharing music and story.

Sarah Beth Nelson (guitar) is a second-year doctoral student at the School of Information and Library Science. She has played piano for 24 years. She has played guitar for considerably less time than that and has a curious habit of offering to perform holiday music on it anyway.

Emily Vardell (oboe) is a fourth-year PhD student at the School of Information and Library Science. She studies health insurance literacy and teaches classes for reference librarians and medical librarians. She has loved the oboe since her parents first pointed it out to her in the movie Fantasia and ever since has enjoyed explaining to people exactly what an oboe is—including in the airport security line!
