Welcome to the 20th English
Alpine Championships, the
9th we have held in Bormio.
I am once again delighted
to be welcoming you to the
notorious delights of Italy.
We have moved all the races
back over to the Bormio
side as there was a mixed
response on the race hill in
Oga from last year. We have
however moved some of the
races round so I think the programme is looking great
for the week and will give a marvellous opportunity for
the athletes. I am thoroughly looking forward to another
fantastic week of racing.
We have moved from five days of racing back to six,
which we hope will mean the Championships flow even
better than in previous years. We have also introduced a
Super Combined event for the first time, which is always
an exciting event for the racers and supporters.
We are delighted to be back in Bormio for the 9th time and
celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Championships.
Bormio are incredible hosts and we look forward to racing
again on the resort’s world-class pistes.
The organising team at Snowsport England have been
working extremely hard throughout the year to ensure
we continually develop the championships, we aim to
continually improve the event for the athletes, supporters,
sponsors and all Snowsport England stakeholders.
I sincerely hope the success of the senior British
Athletes this season is proving inspirational to the
young athletes competing.
A number of SSE board members and myself will be in
the resort throughout the duration of the championships,
all of whom will be more than happy to talk to you and
answer any questions - please do come and say hello!
Finally, may I take this opportunity to wish Good Luck
to all competitors, have a great week.
Tim Fawke Chief Executive, Snowsport England
In what is set to be a week of top class racing and skiing camaraderie, top English skiers, ranging from Under 10s up to senior athletes, will battle it out to become crowned English Champions across six days of racing in the famous Italian resort.
The championships will commence with the spectacular Opening Parade on the evening of Saturday 13th in the centre of Bormio. New for 2016 is the introduction of a FIS Super Combined race on Thursday 18th following the return of Team Parallel Slalom on the night of Tuesday 16th under the floodlights after two hugely successful years.
The English Alpine Championships continue to feature the rising stars of Alpine skiing in England,
previously acting as a platform for the likes of Chemmy Alcott and Dave Ryding. A key event on the Alpine calendar, the Championships give athletes a fantastic opportunity to gain professional racing experience on world-class race pistes.
For athletes and supporters, there will be the chance to test the latest Rossignol skis during the week. A range of skis will be available for testing at the bottom of the Alpina piste.
Snowsport England would like to thank the continued sponsorship and support of the event by main sponsors Rossignol, Vital and prize sponsors Ski Bartletts, Ski Bitz Ski and BARSC.

BEST BAR BeWhite Apres Ski Bar, where you can have fun dancing without even taking your ski boots off. If you are heading into Bormio village,
take the time for a beverage in the cool, stylish bar that is ‘Skianta’. Owned by Guillano, snacks and drinks will be available all night.
BEST SKI SHOP Check out Celso Sport behind the Cristallo Restaurant opposite the finish area of the Stelvio piste. Mauro and his team have everything you could need from replacement baskets and screws to designer ski wear.
BEST PIZZA Pizzeria Cristall on Via Vallecetta 1 is top notch. Try Restaurant Skandola, opposite the Bormio Terme sports centre, for taste, value and friendly service, that can’t be beaten.
BEST TO RELAX Bormio is famous for its 2 famous thermal baths; Bagni Vecchi and Bagni Nuovi. These amazing spas offer a brilliant day of pampering for a very reasonable price. (Book in advance through your hotel to get the best prices).
BEST HOTEL No matter where you stay this year, take a look at the brilliant Baita Dei Pini 4 star Hotel. With their fitness room, wellness centre, 4 star food and the infamous Joy’s Cafe, this Hotel has all you could want under one roof.
BEST ROAD You won’t get to drive it in February unfortunately but for all you speed freaks, get to the tourist office and check out the driving/motorbiking events scheduled this summer on Italy’s famous Passo Stelvio. Previously featured on Top Gear, this road is sure to get your heart beating and tyres screeching.
BEST SLOPES While you’re in town, consider taking a look at either Santa Caterina, which held the World Cup race last Christmas, or Livigno for a bit of
variety. Santa is famous for the wide, open Deborah Compagnoni run where you will be lucky to see another skier during most of the winter. While Livigno offers more radical slopes, steeps, trees and great off piste... topped off with some great Apres Ski and amazing TAX FREE shopping.

RACE LOCATIONS Races will take place at two different locations, both accessed via the main gondola.
Stella AlpinaThis is the wide piste above Bormio 2000, accessed via the main gondola as shown on the maps above. This year, racers in both FIS and Children’s competitions will enjoy the rollers on this spectator-friendly slope.
StelvioThis is the big hill used for the FIS races you can see on the TV. It too is accessed via the gondola to 2000, then dropping down across the mountain to our various start points – we don’t use the whole World Cup run! On this slope we will be running all the FIS races, plus the floodlit team parallel slalom.
Adler This hill will not be used in 2016. We used it in 2015, mostly for Children’s races, due to the clash with the Bormio Carnival which restricted our access to the main hill. The Adler piste is at Oga, across the valley from our normal location. This is a short drive through the corner of town and up the far side.

2015 was the inaugural year for the formation of a SSE pathway for athletes from the under 14 category upwards. SSE offered three weekends of fitness testing, skills quest and educational sessions to athletes passing the stage one selection criteria. By the end of the third weekend we had delivered educational sessions on Nutrition, Strength and Conditioning, Sports Psychology, Supplements within sport, teamwork, social media and the BSS Pathway.
The principle reason behind the formation of the squad was to ensure that our athletes were fully prepared for their entry into the world of FIS at 17/18 years old. In order for the journey from the Under 14 age group to the U18 age group to be as smooth as possible we need to ensure that our athletes are physically, mentally and psychologically prepared for the changes that they will experience.
Year one went very well, we will be reviewing all of the feedback we received through the year and will aim to make year two even better. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the athletes and the parents who helped to make the first year such a success, we look forward to working with you again this year.
The Selection Criteria for the 2016/2017 squads is available on the talent part of the Snowsport England Website.
The squad weekend format for 2016 will be as follows:
18th June TBC 19th June TBC 10th September Manchester 11th September Chill Factore Manchester 5/6th November Loughborough University Complex
Further information will be placed on the Alpine Squad Facebook page and the Talent pages of the Snowsport England Website when it becomes available.

GO SKI GO BOARD is a call to action campaign, encouraging people
to get into snowsports, catch the bug, and stay in the sport.
Key highlights include:
Establishment of the GO SKI GO BOARD ambassador team with GB athletes
such as Aimee Fuller, Darcie Mead and Katie Summerhayes supporting the
campaign in public.
We have invited all England squad athletes (Over 18+) to become a
GO SKI GO BOARD ambassador to support and inspire young skiers
and snowboarders.
We have had a specific focus on inviting all SSE clubs to sign up for free to
the GSGB campaign to create better links through from beginner courses
to regular participation and race or freestyle. This will continue into 2016
with funding assistance available from SSE’s Satellite Club programme.
2016 will see the launch of GO COACH GO INSTRUCT, to encourage further
participants into coaching Snowsport as a next step after learning.
’30 Days of Snowsport’ featured in over 30 local and national media
publications including World Snowboard Guide, Mancunian Matters,
IntheSnow and PlanetSki and received unparalleled support from FIS.
Extension of the Tirol partnership as official destination partner has
been secured for the upcoming year. Last year saw 5,000+ entrants
to their kindly contributed holiday competition.
As GO SKI GO BOARD enters its fourth year, we have contracted
with Snowsport Wales and Snowsport Scotland to take the campaign
across the borders, making it a truly nationwide call to action.
