• Parents of students who are in-district and qualify for our Optional Program need to complete the application and submit all proper documentation to Snowden School1. Completed application2. Copy of most recent report card3. Copy of 2011 TCAP scores4. Verification of address (3 proofs)

• In-district parents do not need to go through the application process or the in-person application process at the Board of Education

1. How do I apply online?• To submit an online application:

• Student must currently attend Memphis City School in grades 1 – 11• (Exceptions: Students attending Campus School or charter

schools cannot apply online).• Parents or guardians of students who are eligible to apply online can

pick up a bar-coded “ticket” application:• Monday, January 30, 2012, from 6:30 am until 5:00 pm, or• January 31 through February 2, 2012 from 7:30 am until 5:00

pm• If you have picked up a bar-coded application:

• You may submit application online by accessing Optional Schools Web site and selecting Online Application link.

• Follow step-by-step instructions and obtain online receipt• If you complete online application and obtain online receipt

you will not need to return to BOE on February 3, 2012. • In order to use bar-coded application online, the online

submission must occur prior to February 3, 2012 @ 5:00 p.m.• Note: Online application process is not available if you choose to

have your child privately tested or if test results other than 2011 TCAP are submitted. In that case, applications & documentation must be submitted in person or by mail.

2. When should I apply in person?•If you do not have Web access or if you prefer not to submit application online•If you choose to have your child privately tested or test results are from a test other than the 2011 TCAP Achievement Test•If you child is currently a non-Memphis City Schools student (i.e. county, private school, independent, parochial) or a Memphis City Schools student enrolled in kindergarten, Campus School, or a charter school.•You may pick up bar-coded application at the Board of Education Auditorium• January 30, 2012, 6:30 am until 5:00 pm or on• January 31, 2012 through February 2, 2012, from 7:30 am until 5:00 pm•Then, to apply in person:• Bring the Application for Optional Schools with all the proper documents (see

back of Application for Optional Schools form), on February 3, 2012, between 6:30 am and 5:00 pm to the Board of Education Auditorium

•After February 3, applications must be submitted in the office of the Division of Optional Schools and Advanced Academics. However, bar-coded “ticket” applications may not be used after 5:00 pm on February 3, 2012.

3. How do I apply by mail?• Mail applications for Optional Schools with proper

• Applications received via mail will be processed at end of each workday. Please note that bar-coded applications may be mailed but must be received by 5:00 p.m. on February 3, 2012. Bar-coded applications will be processed in numerical order. The last four digits of the

bar code number reserve your place “in line”.

pre-printed bar codes will be available at the BOE Auditorium.

◦ Last four digits of numeral above bar code Reserves your place in line Allow you to drop off your completed application or apply

online any time before 5:00 pm on Friday, February 3, 2012.◦ Must complete the bottom section of the bar-coded

application, detach and submit to Optional Schools staff prior to leaving BOE with application.

◦ Applications with bar codes that are submitted by 5:00 pm on February 3, 2012 will be processed first.

Application Process OrderApplications are processed on a first-come, first served basis using the following

procedures:

1. Sibling Preference for Memphis City qualified students with siblings in the same Optional Program who are maintaining the Optional requirements. A sibling is a brother or sister who lives at the same address.

2. Memphis City qualified students3. Optional students who currently reside in the county and are currently

enrolled in Memphis City Schools4. County qualified siblings5. County qualified students6. Tennessee qualified students7. Out-of-state qualified students

Slots for qualified siblings are held for 20 working days. March 9, 2012 is the last day for sibling preference.

When will I find out if my child has been accepted into an Optional School? Optional Staff will attempt to notify you within six to eight weeks of the first

day of the application process.
