Great news.....our club has joined the wave of the future in social networking and BSSC now has it’s own site on FACEBOOK! The club is listed under “Balboa Ski & Sports Club” and can be accessed one of 2 ways....on your personal Facebook site go to “Groups” and then search for the club site to join....or send me a friend request on Facebook and I’ll send you a return request to join the club’s group site. Either way will work!

So why should the club be on FACEBOOK? For one, it will be great adver-tising for our wonderful club that has so much to offer in the way of ongoing activities. You, as a member, will also be able to see all of the upcoming events listed on the site....just in case you misplace your SnoJob. And members will be able to post comments and pictures on club happenings for all to see! One general “rule” that I would like to reinforce, please, is to not post any pictures of other members/people without their prior permission. I am currently the Administrator of the site and will have to remove the ability for members to post pictures if this privilege is abused. Let’s all enjoy the opportunity to stay in touch in yet another “way” by participating on the club’s FACEBOOK page!

A stunning reinvention produced by Lincoln Center Theater, South Pacific swept the 2008 Tony Awards®, winning seven honors including Best Musical Revival. The breathtaking new production features a cast of 34 and a full orchestra of 26 members -- the largest orchestra of any touring Broadway production.

Set on a tropical island during World War II, the musical tells the sweeping romantic story of two couples and how their happiness is threatened by the realities of war and by their own prejudices. The beloved score’s songs include “Some Enchanted Evening,” “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair,” “This Nearly Was Mine” and “There is Nothin’ Like a Dame.” USA Today cheers, “Gorgeous! South Pacific doesn’t just float; it soars!”

September Bridge Lesson

The BSSC bridge group will meet this month at Caroline Reed’s home,

8853 La Zana St., Fountain Valley. Call her to reserve @ 714-847-1953.

It was a beautiful Saturday morning as 13 spirited BSSC bike riders once again gathered at Nancy Slusher’s place in Seal Beach for coffee and breakfast snacks. After consider-able visiting, we headed for the Belmont Shore bike path! After navigating the Marina and Second Street Bridge, we then picked up Nila and Bob Kyser by Mother’s Beach. From there it was an easy ride over to the bike path (as Bayshsore was closed to traffic).

Rich Tonti was out in front, as usual, to catch those great “photo ops”. Joe Stanczyk, Carolyn Hawkins, Joe de Carlo, and Lee Lewison were all there as well. We eyeballed the Belmont Shore Tiki Festival, but continued along the bike path. Everyone was more interested in chatting away than in getting to the end of the bike path. We stopped opposite the Queen Mary for our “break” and group photos.

On our return, Dottie Kavanau, Kathy and Doug Preble along with new member, Ralph Dexter, checked out the crowds in front of Parker’s Lighthouse who had gathered to witness the Flugtag event in Rainbow Harbor Lagoon. The Sunday papers reported on the “flying models” being launched over the water. The rest of us hurriedly continued back to Seal Beach. After a quick stop at Nancy’s we then headed for the Long Beach Yacht Club where Reba and John Kramer and Janice Furman awaited our arrival. During a great lunch buffet in a private room overlooking Alamitos Bay and the marina, we had lots of time to continue social-izing… the real reason for the day’s event!

Sunday, September 19th — Movie Day

A black velvet shoe bag was left at Pat Nan-gle’s clubhouse at the end-of-the-year party. If you somehow took it or saw it, would you please call Elaine Kermes at 714-775-0717.

We’re not looking for the glass slipper....But we’d love to find the bag it came in!

September 19 is our date this month, as there are too many things on the last Sunday in September. We are going to try for “The American” which opens September 17th. Call or e-mail Maxine if you are interested.

Lets Go Skiing!I know all of you are getting ready for your first ski trip, and getting in shape so you can do those extra turns. Mam-moth weekends, Mammoth Mid weeks, FWSA, Sun Valley, and Utah – all great places to ski and race. So let’s see you there. Our Ski Committee meeting wasn’t until August 31, as we had to fashion it around August vacation time, but we will have some fine results for you all. See you in September!

Racing NEWS.. This year at FWRA Alpine Meadows, April 1-3rd, there will be some new rules. New Super Vets, special conditions on qualifying to race in finals, and lots more. E-mail me or come to the meeting for details. Maxine Hanlon 714 641-8513 [email protected]

Bike Ride & Lunch Recap

written by Nancy Slusher, Event Leader

Mammoth is “the” place to be in December, January, Febru-ary, March and April. All details and trip information will be finalized soon. Balboa puts on the best trips – surely not to be missed! Mark these weekends on your skiing calendar - December 9-12, 2010, January 6- 9, 2011, Febuary 24-27, 2011, and March 17 –20, 2011. Come to our September 21st meeting for details. See Christy or others in the Mammoth booth for details. Laura Kennedy will be attending and is sure to have a glimpse of the coming season at Mammoth. There are still openings for Mammoth trip leaders, so call or e-mail Christy or Maxine with your requests. Mammoth Mid-week dates will be set after this Snojob goes to press. So another great reason to attend the September 21st meeting.

Race for the CureThe Orange County Race for the Cure. It is a very inspiring event that supports a charity that our club has also endorsed and has fielded a “Team Balboa” (team #1365) the last several years. This year’s event is on Sunday, September 26th, and is held once again at New-port’s Fashion Island. You can choose to run, walk, or even stay in bed! But when you sign up for the race you are directly supporting the fight against breast cancer. And you get a really cool t-shirt! Call Connie Peacock or Maxine Hanlon for info.

We held our third summer Tennis Mixer on August 22nd. It was a gorgeous warm, sunny afternoon at The Tennis Club in Newport Beach. We had 20 players in two divisions and played non-stop tennis for two hours. Afterwards we were ready for cocktails followed by a potluck provided by the par-ticipants. It was very unusual... for many years the variety of food has been wonderful with very few duplicates and many wonderful cooks. But this time, absolutely no one brought dessert! Maybe that’s a hint about our overall food intake!

Unfortunately the photos for this event were taken with a cell phone ( a no-no for future events!) and the quality was marginal at best for our printed newsletter. They will, however, be posted on our web version of the Snojob so log on and see them there!

If you need some practice, don’t forget we have tennis every Sunday morning at Corona del Mar High School. No res-ervation needed, just show up and play. Play starts early, about 8:00, and goes until 10:00 or so.
