S&n$h& Mews Journal of the Buddhist Meditation Society of Northern British Columbia WINTER 2001 Volume V Number I A mindfully full house The Vipassana retreat held in F e b r u a r y w a s a success on all levels. Everything worked, although the icy wind discouraged many of us from t a k i n g t h e o p p o r t u n i t y t o p r a c t i c e walking meditation outdoors. It was also the largest group we've gathered for a visiting teacher and the room at the Willows w a s c o m f o r t a b l y full. Too full for ac- complishing the extended periods of walking m e d i t a t i o n , a l t h o u g h some managed to mindfully p i c k t h e i r w a y t h r o u g h t h e r a g g e d r o w s of cushions, mats and blankets. Adrianne Ross' teaching was as fresh and sharp and clear as the wind that kept the chimes singing outside the door. Opening the retreat, she led us in chanting the Refuge Prayer and Precepts in Pali. Colored with short readings, stories and anecdotes from her own e x p e r i e n c e . A d r i a n n e p r e s e n t e d t h e B u d d h a - D h a r m a a s a liv- ing, synergistic technique we can use to understand how and why meditation p r a c t i c e w o r k s . Private i n t e r v i e w t i m e with the teacher was available throughout the weekend, but sensing that people were reluctant or unsure about the interview process. A d r i a n n e o r g a n i z e d s m a l l d i s c u s s i o n groups for Sunday during the walking periods. This gave people, in groups of 8 or 9, an opportunity to ask her questions without the risk of feeling " p u t o n t h e s p o t . " I t w o r k e d v e r y well, a l t h o u g h i t d i d stray from the concept of a s i l e n t r e t r e a t . P e r h a p s w h e n A d r i a n n e or another teacher comes again, we'll feel more confident and take full advantage of t h e B u d d h i s t t r a d i t i o n of oral teaching. A d r i a n n e r e c o m m e n d s , f o r people who are interested in continuing work in this practice, a longer retreat. She told us that usually it takes two days for u s t o settle down, put aside the busyness of our lives and relax. By the third day of a retreat, we're ready to get down to the business at hand. The g r o u p A d r i a n n e teaches i n t h e L o w e r M a i n l a n d o r g a n i z e s several week-long retreats through the year at a rented retreat cen- tre on V a n c o u v e r I s l a n d . For the retreat here...many thanks to all who attended for your generosity to the teacher, as well as to U t a f o r m a k i n g h e r home available to the teacher and the cooks! How important is faith ? Sharon Salzberg is a f o u n d e r o f t h e I n s i g h t M e d i t a t i o n S o c i e t y i n B a r r e , M a s s a c h u s e t t s , a n d o f t h e Barre Center for Buddhist Studies. She is the author of Lovingkindness: The Revolutionary Art of Happiness from S h a m b h a l a P u b l i c a t i o n s . The following, written by Sharon Salzberg, was downloaded from the "Basic Buddhism " page of Tricycle magazine s website, tricycle.com. There's lots more there. Check it out. In Pali (the language of the original B u d d h i s t t e x t s ) , t h e w o r d f o r faith is saddha.While s o m e t i m e s t r a n s l a t e d as "confidence" or "trust," the literal meaning of saddha i s " t o p l a c e y o u r h e a r t u p o n . " When we give our hearts over to a spiritual practice, it is a s i g n o f faith or confidence in that practice. Faith opens u s t o what is beyond our usual, limited, self-cen- tered concerns. In the Buddhist psychology, it is called the gate- way to all good things, because faith sparks our initial inspiration to practice meditation and also sustains our ongoing efforts. The concept of faith can be difficult for some people Faith might be associated with mindless belief, or i t m i g h t imply the need to proclaim allegiance to a creed or doctrine and then fear of being judged, by oneself or others, for one's degree of c o m p l i a n c e . W h e n we use faith in a Buddhist context it is quite different from this. To "place the heart upon" does not at a l l m e a n rigidly believing in something and thus being defensive about opening to new ideas. It doesn't m e a n u s i n g t h a t w h i c h we have faith i n a s a w a y o f feeling separate from a n d s u p e r i o r to others. When we talk about saddha, w e a r e t a l k i n g a b o u t a heartfelt confidence in the possi- bility o f o u r o w n a w a k e n i n g . We experience faith on many levels. In a c l a s s i c a l t e x t e n t i t l e d " T h e Q u e s t i o n s of King Milinda," a monk named Nagasena uses an allegory to illustrate this. A group of people gathered on the edge of a f l o o d i n g s t r e a m w a n t t o g o t o the far shore but are afraid. They don't know what to do until one wise person comes along, assesses the situation, takes a running leap, and jumps to the other side. Seeing the example of that per- son, the others say, "Yes, it can be done." Then they also jump. In this story the near shore isour usual confused condition, and the far s h o r e i s t h e a w a k e n e d m i n d I n s p i r e d b y w i t n e s s i n g a n o t h e r , w e say, "Yes, it can be done." That is one level of faith. After w e h a v e jumped ourselves, when we say, "Yes. it can be done," that is quite another level Of faith. continued on page 4
