• Saving and sharing locations is important to respondents.

• Respondents rely heavily on a notes app or their memory to guide their recommendations.

• People trust the people they know, specifically people they know who are “experts”.

• Respondents check Facebook and Instagram daily. A smaller percentage use Snapchat as well. They don’t use Four Square, however they use Yelp. Our respondents also commonly use ride services like Uber, payment services like Venmo, and location services like Google Maps.

• The name Snatch was noted as “distracting” to some.

“Friends who have specific expertise on something (someone who eats out a lot probably can give good

restaurant recommendations). Critics in newspapers I know have great taste (Jonathan Gold). People I think are cool on

social media (I follow their geo-tags).”

“I love being able so see where bloggers go on Instagram. I wish I could save the location, let's say one of my fave

influencers/food or fashion blog people goes to Paris. I want to be able to tag/save the restaurants she's been if I want to for a later date with a note. That would be great. I'll often check the

geotag of a location on Instagram in addition to yelp, to see user photos.”

“It reminds me of the slang for vagina.”

“When I am making list for people that are going on a New York trip, I know that I already have the list saved. I just search the list in my emails, actually.

Even though that's hard to find because i cant' remember what the email is."

• Interviewees believe that word of mouth recommendations that are validated by an app like Yelp or the internet are the best sources of information about where to visit.

• Photos, user generated reviews are important to consider visiting somewhere.

• All interviewees value recommendations and advanced planning when selecting places to visit; additionally, New Yorkers tend to also value the on-foot discovery element.

• People rely heavily on Instagram geo-tags to find new “places” or remember ones they’ve visited.

• Nobody we interviewed had a system they felt worked well.

2. You have a friend coming to visit New York for the first time! Create a folder of your three favorite restaurants in the city and email them to your friend Julie ([email protected]).

3. You just moved to this neighborhood (your current location) and don’t know the area well. Show me how you’d find and “snatch” the nearest nail salon?

4.You’re rushing home from work and just passed a new restaurant called Sugar Fish that you’d love to revisit. You don’t have time to stop now but you’d love to check it out on Monday after work. How might you use Snatch to remind you to visit this place on Monday night when you have time to stop?

5. You’re inside a new boutique, and the saleswoman let’s you know that they will be having a huge sale next Thursday. She gives you her card, and lets you know that if you call her ahead of time, she’ll give you VIP access. Show me how to Snatch the store and add a screenshot of her business card, reminding you to call her ahead of time.

6.You’re headed to San Francisco for the holidays and you don’t want to forget a new restaurant you head about on NPR. How would you Snatch the restaurant Foreign Cinema located in San Francisco?

• Remember where the best restaurants are, what types of occasions they are good for, and what she ordered.

• Keep a running list of the places she reads about so frequently.

• Be an expert in all things in each neighborhood, so that when she takes friends to explore an area there is shopping, bars, restaurants, etc., all conveniently located.

• Log the geo-tags of the Instagram

• Due to scarring experiences, she does not trust places that aren’t either recommended by a friend or that she has not been to.

• She constantly passes tons of restaurants that she hopes to revisit, however, when she screenshots or texts herself the name she often forgets about it or loses the text.

• Friends are coming to visit from out of town at least once every few weeks, but they all have different interests.

FRUSTRATIONS

Originally from Potomac, Maryland, Lana moved to New York after four years at the University of Wisconsin. She began her NYC life in Chelsea as an Associate Account Manager at MRY, where she moved her way up to an Account Executive. She currently lives in a large studio in Williamsburg. Her passion for food led her to transition to a role at Grubhub. Lana considers herself to be a foodie, constantly exploring New York neighborhoods to discover new hidden gems. She is seen as the “go-to” friend when it comes to recommendations, and knowing the perfect spot for each occasion.

• Loves reading about others on Facebook but prefers to email personal photos because she’s concerned about privacy.

• Looking forward to her trip to Napa for her anniversary but can’t find the email her friend sent her 6 months ago with recommendations.

• She’s collected names of the most reliable cobblers, tailors and dry cleaners but when friends asks for a reference, she needs to dig business cards.

FRUSTRATIONS

Deborah’s a native New Yorker who works part-time as a real estate agent in suburban Long Island. She and her husband are inching toward retirement in Florida and are trying to take advantage of nearby New York City’s cultural riches. While her free-time during the week is spent running errands locally, she looks forward to spending weekends in the city, sharing meals with her daughter, shopping for clothes, visiting museums and seeing shows. She relies heavily on recommendations from trusted critics on NPR and The New York Times and the occasional friend who seems to know everything.
