    O N T H E T RA C KS | Jason A l l ies | Portfol io : www.snapixel .com/portfol io/smedly

This photo was taken in Guelph, Ontar io in the summer of 2009 after an adventure to f ind an old

abandoned st reetcar. Whi le explor ing the c i ty , my gi r l f r iend Marni and I came across a t ra in br idgethat was no longer in use . A fter tak ing a few photos I turned to f ind Marni walk ing on the t racks and

I se ized the opportuni ty . I got lucky wi th the l ight ing and the sky , and how her b lue dress works so

wel l wi th the other colors in the f rame. I ve done a lot of adjustments to color , leve ls , e tc , but the

hardest part was removing the bag that she had put down bes ide her.

Artist s Statement | My name is Jason A l l ies and I ve been tak ing photos s ince I was 11 . My f i rs tcamera was a Kodak Instamat ic X-15F, and the f i rs t photo I took was of a Pont iac F iero that parked

outs ide my house . I remember thinking that I was going to have that car someday I never d id get

the car , but 20 years later I m st i l l very pass ionate about pho tography.

I grew up in A lberta after moving f rom Br i t i sh Columbia at an ear ly age . I moved to Toronto in 2007

to pursue a career in Broadcast . The move has given me many opportuni t ies to expand my sk i l l s in

photography , and potent ia l ly turn i t into something more than just a hobby . I ve recent ly started

exhibi t ing my photography at art fa i rs and coffee shops and the response has been overwhelming.

I just recent ly upgraded to the Canon 50D f rom an XT i that served me wel l for a few years . I tend tost ick to e i ther the Canon 17-85mm or my Sigma 10-20mm, which I love . The wide angle lens works

    wel l for the type of photography I enjoy . I recent ly purchased a 70-200mm and whi le i t i s a stunning

    lens , I have yet to f ind a p lace for i t .

The major i ty of my photographs are wide shots of landscapes , c i tyscapes , and archi tecture . I tend

to use the c i ty as my subject , and compl iment i t wi th sprawl ing c loud-f i l led sk ies . A l l my photos are

t reated in some way , and often are a resul t of severa l photos combined.

I t means a lot that I am able to share my wo rk and hopeful ly inspi re someone e lse to do the same.

Welcome to the f i rst issue of Snapixel Magazine, our version of a theme-based,

community-dr iven media publicat ion .

Our goal is to promote creat ive and engag ing photography and the photographers

    behind the camera.

As technology advances, photography constantly transit ions . Yet the moment of

t ime captured in an instant - in the snap of a photograph - continues to create an

emotional response. Photography wi l l a lways be an inspir ing and powerful form

    of communicat ion .

Each month, we l l publish an onl ine PDF and an on-demand pr int version of

Snapixel Magazine. By doing so, we help reduce paper waste and avoid the cost ly

overhead seen by tradit ional publishing companies . In the future , we may create

a glossy , retai l vers ion avai lable in your nearest boo kstore .

In th is issue, you l l f ind photographs based on the theme Habitat , submitted by

Snapixel members . The col lect ion documents an array of environments - f romoceans to homes to subway stat ions.

We hope you enjoy the f i rst issue and we look forward to showcasing even more

    photographers in the coming months.

    Cheers , The Snapixel Team

    FEATURED PHOTOGRAPHER

    Mukul Soman

ARTISTS STATEMENT I strongly bel ieve in fol lowing the heart ,and that is exact ly what catapulted me to fol low my passion for photogra-

phy very ser iously . My photography roots were strongly planted at a very

young age, thanks to my father , mother and sister , who are hardcore pho-

tography enthusiasts , for providing me with the r ight equipment at the

r ight t ime and for encouraging me in whatever good I did. I must a lso thank

my aunt who encouraged me a lot in watercolor , which resulted in enhanc-ing my composit ional ski l ls to a great extent . My fr iends, too, have contr ib-

    uted a lot in my development as a photographer . Being a student for l i fe , i t

has been a long and enjoyable journey for me in the f ie ld of photography,

where every day , I discover and learn new ways to capture l i fe the way my

eyes see i t and express my v ision to the world. Today, I enjoy al l aspects of

my photography and str ive to provide top qual i ty , precise and art ist ical ly

r ich photographs. And I f i rmly bel ieve that my love affai r with photography

    wi l l be etched in my heart forever . www.snapixel .com/portfol io/mukulsoman

    Q & A withJen ONeal, Co-Founder of Tripping.com

    40 Snapixel

    What is Tripping.com?

Tr ipping is a social network for t ravelers who want to connect with locapeople , wherever they go.

For example . . . imagine v isi t ing Par is and only seeing the Ei f fe l TowerWhi le you probably enjoyed the v iew from the top, you completely

missed the best parts - and the real culture - of Par is . With Tr ippingyou can meet Par isians who wi l l show you their favor ite spots, br ing youto their f r iends part ies and even invite you to stay in their homes. It spretty great .

So, what do locals get out of i t ?

Tr ipping is l ike having the world come to you. The instant you startmeeting travelers , you l l f ind yourself surrounded by fun, colorful andinterest ing people . You l l get to share your l i fe with them and, in turnyoul l learn about their countr ies and cultures. And then, when you havet ime to travel , you l l have fr iends to v isi t a l l over the world.

Who is on the Tr ipping team?

My cofounder and CTO is Nate Weisiger . We were both among the f i rstemployees at StubHub (which was acquired by eBay in 2007) and weveremained fr iends ever since . Our Partnerships Director , Jef f Manheimercame from Travelzoo and we also have some terr i f ic developers and in-terns f rom around the world. It s a great team.

The startup process a lways comes with surpr ises . What have you learned these past few months?

Were learning new things every day! That s the beauty of a startup.

Anecdotal ly , one of our German members actual ly j ust told us t hat tr ipper happens to m ean gonorrhea in Germanwhich is pretty funny. So yeah, we should p robably start looking for a t ranslator . . .

Any important mi lestones for Tr ipping.com?

Within just 1 week of launching our publ ic beta si te , Tr ipping had over 500 members f rom 37 countr ies. We try torol l out a new feature every week and were working on some pretty cu tt ing edge travel tools r ight now. Overal l , theresponse from the community has been overwhelmingly posit ive and were growing fast .

What is your next dest inat ion?

My sister and I have been wanting to hike to Machu Picchu for her birthday, so that wi l l probably be my next tr ipBut as anyone who works for a tech startup knows, i t l l be tough to break away from my laptop and wif i connect ion!

Women in TechJen and Neha, friends of Snapixel, are two San Francisco-based women

making great strides towards utilizing technology to build community.

Being an avid tech blogger, you review the latest and greatest gad-

gets . Which ones have made i t onto your wish- l i st?

Gadgets are wonderful , but i t can be an expensive habit ! I recent ly gota Fl ip Ultra which I am looking forward to using for on-the-go v ideog-raphy. I would love to have a DSLR l ike the Nikon D-90, or i f I wanted tosplurge, the Canon EOS 5D. Also , I would love to s hoot with a RED Cameraas I 've heard some fantast ic feedback.

What projects are you current ly work ing on? Anything coming up inthe near future?

Current ly , I am working on two projects : Rad on the Web on Mevio [ ra-dontheweb.mevio .com] and V01d [www.theV01d.com]. Rad on the Webwil l be 35 episodes in by the end of 2009, and i t 's been a great experi -ence. I co-host and co-produce the show weekly l ive on Just in .TV [ jus-

t in .tv/radontheweb] with Car los Rodela . I love reviewing websites andf inding ones that can make l i fe easier and more streamlined. V01d isa community based show on technological modif icat ion that should belaunching in ear ly 2010, and we just recently went into beta with ourwebsite [www.theV01d.com]. My partner Col leen Kel ly f rom the TWiT net-work and I hope to bui ld a global team of modders and showcase proj-ects that we 've already shot . V01d wi l l provide a spr ingboard for thosethat are new to the world of pushing tech to i ts l imits and also posechal lenges to the more experienced as wel l .

Currently you keep yourself busy as a freelancer. Whats your next career move?

As of January 4th, I wi l l be jo ining the team at Just in .TV as their new project manager of product ion. I wi l l cont inueworking on Rad on the Web and V01d, but wi l l a lso have a ful l t ime job that I am very excited about! Just in .TV be-

l ieves in content creat ion and l ive broadcasts, two of the t hings I strongly value in new media . My role wi l l be to helpfaci l i tate this internal ly and work with partners to get their broadcasts to reach more people on Just in .TV. It wi l l beinterest ing working with so many dif ferent department s, but any good producer knows how to wear a number of hat sand communicate effect ively . I think that wi l l be the key to rocking this posit ion and I look forward to being a partof their very br ight team.

What do you hope your fol lowers take away f rom each b log, tweet and broadcast?

My father comes from a famil y of professors and I think the teaching gene has been passed down to me as wel l . I hopethat when people e ither read my blog or watch one of my shows, they learn something whi le having a good t ime. Newmedia is about entertainment , but i t has an equal purpose to inform; I t ry to do both through every facet where Iput myself out there . The tech-sphere is a lso about bui ld ing relat ionships and breaking boundaries between contentproducers and their fans. On that level , I hope t hat people feel l ike they know me and that I am a f r iend. Who I am oncamera, tweet ing, or in a blog post is who I am with my family and fr iends. On one of my f i rst shoot s ever , my co-hostof told me that "you have to be sl ight ly schizophrenic" to be a personal i ty . Although I agree that you have to mute

things that might be upset t ing you to do a show as posit ively as possible , I don't t hink that i t has to be disingenuous.

With me, what you see is what you get and I appreciate the support that I have received from my fol lowers. To me,the community is the most impor tant thing and I t r y to never over look i ts value in my l i fe . I a lways make sure to writeback to close to every emai l I get f rom a fan and appreciate the onl ine fr iends that I have made through my work .I don't know many engineers or lawyers that get accolades for l iv ing out their passion from complete strangers v iaemai l . I t 's a unique f ie ld that I am amazed and grateful to be a part of every second of every day . I wouldn't t radeit for any other profession in the world--wel l except super hero. But , I don' t think those exist in this universe . . . .yet .
