SMT Art Gallery Exhibition – Seattle Public Utilities - YOUR BODY OF WATER, PART 2 April 5 – July 3, 2017

Your Body of Water, Seattle Public Utilities’ (SPU) newest additions to their portable works collection, are a visual exploration of our connections to water and how it is protected and cared for by SPU. The poet Jourdan Keith, who created the theme, explained it to mean the following:

“We are all bodies of water, connected to one another through the water web. Your Body of water is connected to streams, rivers, lakes, waterfalls, and tides, to toilets and faucets…to present homes, childhood homes and ancestral ones by memory, by the water cycle, by stories.”

The exhibition will feature 15 contemporary artworks ranging from paintings, photography, prints and sculpture. This first exhibition includes the following artists: Nola Ahola, Susanna Bluhm, Cable Griffith, Melissa Herzog, Tierney Hogan, Steve Davis, Marika Swan, Anna McKee, Naoko Morisawa, LessLIE Sam, Juliet Shen, Katy Stone, Kate Vrijmoet, and Inye Wokoma.

Seattle Presents Gallery – Beverly Naidus February 21 – April 14, 2017 “The Nightmare Quilt (Revival)” 1988-2017

Inye Wokoma Open Door, 2012 Digital photo illustration 60” x 24”

Almost 30 years ago, Beverly Naidus created a quilt from canvas scraps and twine that shared her fears for the future and her concerns about that present moment on one side. The original version was displayed on a bed in a gallery, and visitors were invited to share their own nightmares and dreams and place them under the quilt. When they lifted the quilt, they discovered that there were dreams on the opposite side. But to see all the dreams, the visitors needed to ask for help. In other words, we don’t get our collective dreams for the future unless we work in collaboration with each other. Beverly has now created 27 new panels of nightmares and dreams, speaking to our current fears and hopes. She is eager to see how the Seattle city employees and other visitors experience the quilt. She will be available on several occasions to help with the turning of the quilt and discussions related to its content, resources and strategies for action.

SMT Ethnic Heritage Art Gallery – Artists Face Administration Change April 12 - July 10

About the Gallery: The Ethnic Heritage Art Gallery (EHAG) was founded in January 2009 by a coalition of four City of Seattle Affinity Groups: City Light Black Employees Association (CLBEA), Filipino American Civic Employees (FACES), Latino City Employees (LCE), and City of Seattle Native American Employees (CANOES). EHAG’s goals are to build and strengthen relationships with communities of color, to foster pride and appreciation for diverse cultures, showcase and support local artists of color, and build appreciation for the diversity and social commentary of art. EHAG’s goals support the City’s Race and Social Justice Initiative (RSJI). In collaboration with the Office of Arts & Culture, EHAG presents quarterly exhibits showcasing local artists of color selected by the EHAG‘s team of City of Seattle employee volunteers.

Building Management Update Common area carpet replacement on Levels 3, 4, 6 and 40 are now completed. In addition, the common lobbies for Floors 17, 41, & 57 have also been completed with new carpet & paint. The carpet on Level 3 Vestibule lobby is due to be replaced in second quarter of 2017.

The first phase of the SMT Building Envelope Improvements Project began in August and is now continuing through April of 2016. Workers are using the rooftop BMU (Building Maintenance Unit – the equipment used for washing exterior windows) to remove and replace sealants on the exterior walls above the parking garage roof and on the southeast side of the building between levels 16 and 57. Phase II will be commence during second quarter of 2017.

Spring Safety Tips Spring is upon us! The weather is changing, the flowers start blooming, we start spending more time outdoors and many of us start to organize our home in the form of spring cleaning. Along with the return of warmer temperatures comes the opportunity to relax in the backyard, turn up the garden and explore the great outdoors. Here are some ways to help keep you and your family safe and healthy this spring. Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and change the batteries. Stay safe as you grab your tools and head outside. Wear gloves and use safety gear when handling equipment and chemicals. Protect yourself from the sun, use sunscreen with at least SPF 15, wear a brimmed hat and sunglasses that block UVA and UVB rays. When grilling, use a meat thermometer and make sure you cook meat and poultry thoroughly. When out on the trail, whether hiking, camping or hunting, protect yourself from mosquitoes and other bugs by using an insect/tick repellent.

SMT 2016 Blood Drive Results

The Seattle Municipal Tower conducts frequent blood drives in conjunction with the Bloodworks Northwest. Last year 799 donors registered to give at Seattle Municipal Tower; from their gifts the Puget Sound Blood Center, provided support for a potential 2,628 different patients in hospitals throughout western Washington. SMT remains the single largest donor community in downtown Seattle, making a difference for literally thousands of families, friends and neighbors year after year. Seattle Municipal Tower ensures many hundreds of donors have a place to show up, share and be powerful for anyone and everyone who finds themselves in need of blood to make a life-saving, life-changing difference. The first 2017 drive was held February 7th and 8th, with additional drives scheduled April 11th and 12th, June 14th and 15th , July 3rd, August 16th and 17th , October 17th and 18th, and December 13th, 14th and 28th. It’s an amazing thing we do and we here at CBRE are glad to do it alongside you.

Earth Day – Saturday, April 22, 2017

Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 annually. Worldwide events are held to support environmental protection.

Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970. Peace activist, John McConnell proposed the day of March 21, 1970, the first day of spring, to honor the earth and the concept of peace. The date changed to April 22 that year and by 1990 it was taken internationally. Now more than 192 countries each year celebrate Earth Day.

Nicer Weather = More Bikes! The arrival of spring brings the arrival of more bike commuters. Please watch out for bikers on the road and in the garage! Please follow speed limits!

SMT Security Corner Your safety is important to us! Security and Building Management would like to stress the importance of calling the Security Desk at 624-7490 every time a call to 911 is placed. This one simple call can mean so much to a person in need. If Security knows that 911 is on their way, they can call a freight elevator to have at the ready for emergency crews to access the floor they need. If Security is unaware a 911 call has been placed, and emergency personnel show up, it could take 5 minutes or more to call a freight elevator. This is precious time wasted for a person in need of medical care. Also, Security Personnel are first responders and can help in a medical emergency until emergency personnel show up. So always remember: Dial 911, then Dial 624-7490

City Conference Rooms 2240 & 2246 Closing Just a friendly reminder that conference rooms 2240 & 2246 will no longer be available for use effective June 1, 2017.
