Kanayalal Parmanand Bhagwandas HINDUJA COLLEGE OF COMMERCE

The college is managed by Smt. P. D. Hinduja Trust and has been granted minority status.

The college housed in a building owned by the P. D. Hinduja Trust near Charni Road station in South Mumbai, was founded with a view to prepare students for careers in Banking, Commerce and Industry and to imbibe in them a broad, cultured and humanitarian outlook.

Students who seek admission to the Junior college must have passed the S.S.C. examination in Maharashtra.

Other students who have passed I.C.S.E., Central Board or any other equivalent exam must produce an eligibility certificate from the H.S.C. Board, Greater Mumbai for consideration for admission.

Original fee receipts must be carefully preserved and submitted to the office at the time of submission of application for refund of Caution fee and Library deposit.

IDENTITY CARD Every student of the college must posses with him/her the Identity Card given by the

college. It is mandatory for students to wear I-cards in the college premises.

Students without Identity Cards will not be allowed to enter the college premises.

In the event of loss of Identity Card, the students concerned must file a complaint at the police station and report to the college with a copy of the complaint, in writing. The college may issue a fresh Identity Card if the student gives a satisfactory explanation for the loss of the Identity Card.

The Identity Card must be produced whenever demanded by a member of the college staff, including the watchman at the main gate. The watchman is empowered not to allow a student entry to the college without his/her Identity Card.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND FREESHIPS All scholarships and freeships are awarded only to students with good conduct, who

have performed well at examination, tutorials and tests.

Students with poor attendance in the college are not eligible for obtaining scholarships and freeships.

Freeships are not awarded to students who get college merit scholarships or aid from any other institution or the government.

Government Scholarships and Freeships

The Scheme of grant of Government of India Scholarships to backward class students as specified by the State Government, is applicable to such students and others coming under the lower income group. Such students have to apply for the Government of India Scholarships in the prescribed form through the college office only in the month of June. Students should collect the application form at the proper time from the college office, fill in and submit the same duly completed, to the college office before/on the stipulated date. Incomplete, incorrect or false information furnished in the application will render the applicant disqualified for scholarships. Students having a gap in the course of education should file a court affidavit declaring what they were doing during the break in their career.

Students in receipt of Government of India Scholarships in the preceding year and having passed the University / H.S.C. or Annual examinations are required to submit an application for the renewal of the said Scholarships.

Applications for freeships / Scholarships are generally rejected on the following grounds :

1. The income of the student's father / guardian exceeding the prescribed limit. 2. The student being a repeater, or 3. The student having switched over from a professional course, or being in

employment.

In addition to the scholarships and freeships mentioned above, the following Union and State Government Scholarships and Freeships are available to eligible students.

A. Scholarships

1. National Loan Scholarships. 2. Maharashtra State Government Open Merit Scholarships. 3. Scholarships for children of Political Sufferers and Freedom

Fighters. 4. Merit Scholarships for children of Primary and Secondary

School Teachers.

B. Freeships are given to : (i) All girl students certified to be eligible by the Department of

Education, Maharashtra State. (ii) Children of parents whose annual Income is below Rs.4,800/- per annum. (iii) Children of full time Primary School Teachers, backward Class

Students, who have not been given Government of India scholarships

Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and other backward and Economically Backward class students who have been granted scholarships, freeships are required to maintain good progress and keep not less than 75% attendance during each of the terms in order to qualify for the award/continuation of Scholarships or Free- studentship.

State Scheduled Government Rajiv Gandhi's Students' Accidental Insurance Policy :

1. Rs.30,000 for unfortunate accidental death.

2. Rs.50,000 for permanently handicapped.

3. Rs.20,000 for Impairment of any limb or an eye.

4. Rs.2,000 for medical treatment.

5. Maximum Rs.10,000 for surgery.

6. Rs.350 for book loss in an accident.

7. Rs.650 for the students who could not appear for the exam (because of an accident) as examination fees.

8. Rs.1,500 in case of damage or theft of a bicycle.

9. Schools, Higher & Technical, Tribal, Agricultural, Social Justice, Cultural Work, Medical related and approved school and colleges are eligible for it.

HINDUJA FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS

The Hinduja Foundation offers prestigious scholarships to outstanding students of the college who excel in Academics, Sports & Cultural Activities. The tenure of the scholarship is one year, but is renewable for another year provided the student continues to maintain academic excellence during the following year as well. Separate scholarships are available to students of the Junior College. The holders of the scholarships and referred to as Hinduja Foundation Scholars.

• Details of various freeships and scholarships instituted by the government will be displayed on the college notice-board.

LIBRARY The college has an up-to-date library with many standard books of reference and journals.

1. Students shall be allowed in the library only on production of a valid Identity Card and shall be issued books against the Reader’s Ticket provided by the library.

2. Failure to return book issued for home reading within the time limit will invite a levy of fine.

3. If the Reader’s Ticket is lost, the students concerned must inform the Librarian Immediately about the same, in writing and apply for a new Reader’s Ticket.

4. Reference books, examination question papers, periodicals, daily newspapers and certain text - books cannot be taken out of the library. Such books and periodicals must be returned on the same day before the library closes for the day. Failure to do so will render the student liable to pay fine.

5. Students must be careful in handling Library books, periodicals and journals. 6. Smoking or spitting in the library hall or in any part of the college is strictly

prohibited. 7. All students are required to maintain silence in the library. 8. Ex-Students are not entitled to the library or reading room facility. Students are

requested to refer to the library notice board for instructions that may be issued from time to time.

DISCIPLINE 1. Every student must possess a valid Identity Card issued to him/her by the college

with his/her photograph affixed and it must bear the signature of the Principal. She/he is under an obligation to present it for inspection or verification or for any other authorised purpose, whenever demanded by a member of the college staff.

2. Attendance at lectures, tutorials and tests, if any, according to the time-table in force is compulsory. When a student cannot attend lectures, she/he must submit a note signed by his/her parent or lawful guardian to the Principal stating reason for his/ her inability to attend. A student failing to submit such a leave note within a reasonable time will be liable for disciplinary action.

3. No student can attend any class other than his/her own. except with the prior permission of the teacher concerned.

4. Every student must take proper care of the college property and help in keeping the college premises clean and peaceful.

5. Disciplinary action will be taken against students who : * Misuse, disfigure, damage walls, doors, windows, furniture and fittings of the

college. * Loiter about in the college while the lectures are in progress.

* Organise any activity, programme or drive, without the prior written permission of

the Principal.

* Convey any misinformation about the college to anyone or write to the press, to bring the college into disrepute without proper justification.

6. Students found guilty of disobedience, misconduct or misbehaviour or any other act of serious indiscipline are liable to either lose their terms or be expelled from the college.

7. Smoking or spitting in the college premises is strictly prohibited. 8. Every student of the college is expected to come to college neatly and decently

dressed. 9. Students should also note that only members of the teaching staff are entitled to

confiscate the mobile phones.

10. Students involved in cases of physical assault and use of verbal abuse will be suspended from the college with immediate effect.

11. Students who are involved in copying cases (caught with written material) will be given zero marks in the said subject and will be denied admission to S.Y.J.C. even if they manage to pass F.Y.J.C. with good percentage.

ATTENDANCE Every student joining this college must attend, at least 75% of the total number of

working days in each term of the academic year. Unsatisfactory attendance without sufficient ground may result in the cancellation of admission of the concerned student.

A student who, for whatsoever reason, is unable to attend the college for more than 25% of the total number of working days of any given month from the commencement of the academic year is liable for disciplinary action.

A list of defaulters in attendance will be put up on the 10th of each month on the notice board of the college. Similarly such a list will be put up at the end of each term : students are advised to see the notice board regularly.

A student who is a regular participant in extra curricular activities & sports activities is required to have a minimum of 50% attendance in each term separately as per Board Rules. Special consideration will be given in such cases where it becomes necessary for a student to remain absent from the class for attending or participating in any game/sports or extra-curricular activity organised by the college at the state level, provided such a student produces the requisite certificate from the chairperson of the concerned association/organisation.

Regulation 88 (1) (a) Maharashtra Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board Regulations, 1977, clearly states that a candidate should attend lectures for not less than 75% of the working days separately in two different terms. She/He may not be allowed to appear for the final examination unless she/he completes the minimum attendance prescribed under this clause.

F.Y.J.C. Students who constantly figure in the zero percent attendance list will be denied admission to S.Y.J.C.

To encourage students to be regular and disciplined, cash awards are given to students with cent percent attendance.

SUBJECTS OF STUDY

At the Junior College level a student has to study English, Economics, Book-keeping and Accountancy, Organisation of Commerce, EVS, PT and one of the following :

(i) Mathematics and Statistics

(ii) Secretarial Practice

and a modern Indian language; i.e. Marathi, Hindi, Sindhi or information Technology.

The above mentioned optional languages, optional subjects and timings are subject to change as per requirements from time to time.

To pass in a subject, the minimum requirement is 35 marks out or 100.

Higher Secondary Certificate will be awarded in grades as given below.

Grade 1 : (With Distinction) : To successful candidate who obtain 75% and more marks in the aggregate, calculated on the basis of 7 subjects offered for the examination.

Grade I : To successful candidates who obtain less than 75% but not less than 60% marks in the aggregate calculated on basis of subjects offered for the examination.

Grade II : To successful candidates who obtain less than 60% marks but not less than 45% marks in the aggregate calculated on the basis of 7 subjects offered for the examination.

Grade Pass to all other successful candidates.

TESTS & EXAMINATION JUNIOR COLLEGE

IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS FOR STUDENTS

Students should regularly attend lectures and refer the Notice Board. The College will not be responsible if a student is unaware of any important information / instruction given in the classroom or displayed on the Notice Board. The salient features of the Examination Scheme for Environment Education is given below :

Project : 30 Marks Assignments: 20 Marks

Annual Result = Project (30) + Assignments (20) = 50 Total marks will be converted to Grade.

Examination Scheme for Health and Physical Education Health and Physical Education has been included in the group of compulsory subjects and is prescribed for 50 marks.

Theory : 25 marks Practical : 25 marks

Annual Result = Theory (25) + Practical (25) = 50

These marks will be converted into a grade and will be shown in the Annual Result.

Examination Scheme for Languages : Every Language (English / Marathi / Hindi) for F.Y.J.C. & S.Y.J.C. is prescribed for 100 marks consisting of written examination of 80 marks of 3 hours duration and an Oral examination of 20 marks. Written examination for S.Y.J.C. will be conducted by the H.S.C. Board and the Oral examination will be conducted by the College and the marks will be submitted to the H.S.C. Board.

In the Oral examination, students will be examined in their skills in Listening (6 marks), Reading (4 marks), Speaking (5 marks) and Conversation (5 marks). It will be held before the commencement of the Annual H.S.C. Board Examination as per the schedule received from the Board. It will be mandatory for every student to appear for the Oral examination as per the schedule displayed on the Notice Board.

If a student fails to do so, he will be reported 'Absent' and he will have to appear for the oral exam after the written papers on dates specified by the Board.

For FYJC students, the Oral Examinations will be conducted only once (before the Annual written paper). If the student remains absent for the same, his result will not be declared and the parents will have to give an undertaking to the college for the re-tests. Such students will get admission to SYJC only in the month of June.

EXAMINATION SCHEME FOR F.Y.J.C. COMMERCE

For all Mathematics, IT and Languages subjects:

For all Commerce subjects: Theory : 80 marks Activity Based Test: 20 marks

1. Attendance at the Examinations is compulsory. If a student fails to appear for these Examinations he/she will not be granted Terms.

2. After the completion of each Examination, results will be declared within two / three weeks. Assessed answer books of each subject will be shown to the student in the classroom by the subject teacher.

3. Students may not inform parents about their marks. In such cases parents are requested to verify the performance of their ward at each Examination by contacting the Vice-Principal of the Junior College.

4. Parents should note that the student will be examined for 200 marks (Maximum) in each subject. The final result will be decided on the basis of the average marks obtained at these examinations which is calculated using the formula.

5. Minimum marks for passing in a subject is 35% and a student will be required to pass in all the subjects for promotion to S.Y.J.C. Class. A total of 15 grace marks (not more than 10 in any subject will be awarded to students only if they secure 25% marks in the average.

6. There is a separate rule of gracing for students with learning disability. This rule is applicable only if the student has submitted the LD certificate to the Exam Committee at the time of admission.

7. Re-examinations for Terminal / Annual Exam (for medical cases) will be conducted by the college. As a rule, there is no re-examination for the Unit Tests.

CANCELLATION OF ADMISSION

In case a student intends to leave the college in the second term., she/he must inform the Principal in writing on or before the last working day of the first term that she / he does not wish to continue his/her studies in the second term. If he/she does not inform of his/ her desire to discontinue his / her studies before the last working day of the first term, she/he becomes liable to pay the full fees for the second term.

N.B. : Students must preserve their caution money receipt and library deposit receipt carefully and submit them along with their applications for refund within six months of their leaving the college. Applications received after six months will not be entertained.
