1 Module Description

The SMS Based Canal Monitoring System Module allows sending of discharge/water depth of the canal via sms. This information can then be used to store the canal discharge at a given RD. The module also enables upkeep of historical and current records. The SMS to be sent to a central server by field personnel is required in a specific format. The central server then uses this information to update the canal depth/discharge level on the EIMS portal for monitoring officers to see and deduce meaningful information. Please note that currently discharge information is not being stored in information.

2 Basic Definitions

Canal: Canals are man-made channels for water. The canal types could be a main canal, distributor or a minor.

RD: Reduced Distance is a monitoring point for which the discharge/depth is sent to the SMS based monitoring

system.

SMS: Short Messaging Services.

3 Process Diagram

The following process chart is useful for understanding the overall flow of the SMS Based Canal Monitoring process of which SMS Based Canal Monitoring is a part and has been re-engineered/automated for monitoring purposes:

As can be seen above the module is about:

a) Create Display Line Diagram, Add RD, Remove RD. b) Register user for Monitoring Points of Canal / Distributory. c) User sends SMS for particular Monitoring Point.

4 Module Features

The key features of the modules are listed below:

4.1 Security Feature

The module has login based permissions and access. It means one user can‟t access or remove/update the information created by EIMS user. Also some of the screens or facilities in the modules are extended as per the roles.

Note to the user:

Please do not share your login and passwords with other users. Please update your passwords regularly

4.2 Search

EIMS gives search facilities for retrieval of data. On the search screen the user is required to enter key phrases to enable search. The various search screens available in Canal Monitoring Module are as follows:

Line Diagram Details: Facility to search Line Diagram details. User can filter the records based on Line as Diagram ID, Scheme Name, and Canal Length.

4.3 Import/Export Utilities:

EIMS provides facilities for:

Export data for Canal of Line Diagram, SMS Log, and Historical Water Level Details in Excel File (For further analysis if needed).

4.4 Hindi/English Support

The module has provision to switch between Hindi and English. For data entry forms, the data entry is possible in English only. The form fields can toggle between Hindi and English.

4.5 Assign Monitoring Point (Register User for Canal / Distributory)

Administrator assigns measuring point to the Person who is responsible to send SMS from particular Monitoring Point. One Person can be assigned to multiple Monitoring Points.



4.6 Get Water Depth

User sends SMS for particular Monitoring Point in Proper as mentioned below: [Predefined as <Monitoring_Point_code><Water_depth_upto_two_decimal_places> (D0.26)]

User can send SMS as many times he wants or whenever water distributed in Canal/Distributory.

In case SMS Service Stopped for any unexpected reason, provision of manual water level entry is there in the module.

4.7 Reporting Feature

4.7.1 Public Reports

Canal Monitoring System: Canal Monitoring system shows the canal details in form of Line Diagram, Distributory off take point, Main Canal monitoring point.

7 Case Study

7.1 Steps in Canal Monitoring

Steps to be taken for recording targets are:

1. Create Line Diagram 2. Register User for Main Canal / Distributory 3. Get Level 4. Remove Line Diagram

7.1.1 Create Line Diagram

Primary Role: Administrator

Operations:

1. Login as Administrator. 2. Click on Create Line Diagram Tab. 3. Fill all required Fields of form. 4. To save the record Click on ‘Generate Line Diagram’ button.



After clicking on ‘Generate Line Diagram’ button record has been saved successfully and a success

message is shown (see below screen).

7.1.2 Registered User for Canal/Distributory


Operations:

1. Login as Administrator. 2. Click on Registered User Button. 3. Click on “Register User for main Canal” 4. Fill all required Fields of form 5. To save the record Click on ‘Save’ button.



Click on “Registered User” Button then show following Screen.

Now Click on “Register User for Main Canal / Distributory”.

After click on ‘Save’ Button record has been saved successfully.



7.1.3 Get Level


Operations:

1. Login as Administrator. 2. Click on Get Level button. 3. Select Asset Name, From Date and To Date and then click on Get Report.

Click on “Get Level” button below Screen Show.



7.1.4 Remove Line Diagram.


Operations:

1. Login as Administrator. 2. Click on Remove Button.

After Click “Remove” Button record has been Remove successfully
