Thisusermanualcontainsimportantinformationregardingtheoperationof your FireAngel smoke alarm.Ensure you read this manual fullybefore installing and operating thealarm.Ifyouareinstallingthissmokealarm for use by others, you mustleave this manual (or a copy of it)withtheenduser.

SENSOR TECHNOLOGYThereare twomain typesofsmokealarms.Optical alarms are generallymore effective at detecting slowburningfireswhichcansmoulderforhours before bursting into flames.Ionisation type smoke alarmsare generally more effective atdetecting fast, flaming fires. Alarmsconforming to European StandardEN 14604:2005 must respond tobothfiretypeswithinspecifiedtimeframes. The ATOM SL-602 uses anoptical(photoelectric)typesensorto

APPLICATIONYoursmokealarmtypicallymeetstheminimum requirements for familyliving units in existing buildings, aslongasat leastoneunit is installedoneachfloor/levelofyourproperty.

In order to achieve the earliest firewarning, we recommend that asmoke alarm is fitted in all roomswhere the temperature is normallybetween 4°C (40°F) and 38°C(100°F). The type of smoke alarmused in each location should be

detectthepresenceofsmoke.

For maximum protection, use both types of smoke alarms on each level of your home.

WARNING: Your FireAngelsmoke alarm can be installed

into a new build property asadditional protection to an existingsmoke detection system only. Itcannot be used as a substitute fora hardwired system as required innewbuildproperties. Inthistypeof

property the building regulationsrequire alarms to be interlinked.You can obtain further informationfrom your local fire service orbuilding control department atyour local council offices. Thesesourcesgenerallyprovideadviceonnew builds or projects that requireplanningpermission.

Institutions and HotelsThis includes motels, hospitals, day

care facilities, long-term healthcare facilities, boarding houses anddormitories. Your smoke alarm canbe used in individual sleeping/resident rooms, providing thesame conditions are met as for asingle-family residence. However,there must already be a primaryfire detection system that meetsregulatory requirements forcommonareas suchas lobbies andhallways. Use of this smoke alarmin common areasmay not providesufficientfirewarningtoresidentsormeetregulatoryrequirements.

This smoke alarm is designed tooperate as a standalone smokealarm.

WARNING: This FireAngelsmoke alarm will not

communicate with other smokealarms or fire alarm systems. It isnot intended as a substitute for acompletealarmsystem.

Mobile Homes and CaravansThis smokealarm isnotsuitable foruseinmobilehomesandcaravans.

Commercial and Industrial PremisesThis smoke alarm is not intendedfor any non-residential, commercialor industrialapplication,norforanyotherpurposethandescribedabove.

POSITIONINGOptical smoke alarms are lessprone to false alarms from cookingfumes, and are therefore suitableforlocationsnearkitchens.Howeveroptical smoke alarms are moresusceptibletonuisancealarmsfromsteamandshouldnotbelocatedtooclosetobathroomsandshowers.It is recommended that yourFireAngelsmokealarmisNOTtobefittedinthefollowinglocations:• Bathrooms, shower-rooms, and

otherverydamporhumidareas,where the moisture can causeunwantedalarms.

• Kitchens. Kitchens should beprotected with self-containedHeatAlarms,asthecombustionparticles from cooking inkitchenswill result inunwantedalarms and permanentcontamination of the smokealarm’ssensor.

• In areas where excessive dustor dirt could contaminate thesensingchamber,makingitover

sensitive or impairing smokeentry.

• In areas where the ambienttemperature is not controlledand may regularly drift below4°C(40°F)orabove38°C(100°F)e.g. unheated buildings, openatticspaces.

• Verydirty,dustyorgreasyareas.• In very draughty areas, such asclose to ceiling fans or fresh airvents.Draughtscanblowsmokeawayfromthealarm.

• In insect infested areas. Insects

canclogopeningstothesensingchamber, preventing smokeentry or causing unwantedalarms.

• Within30cm(12”)ofafluorescentlightfittingwhichemitselectrical‘noise’ that can prevent correctalarmoperation.

• Within30cm(12”)ofawall,lightfittings or other ceiling basedobstructions.

• In‘deadair’spaces(seefollowingdiagram).

WHAT ARE THE LIMITATIONS OF MY SMOKE ALARM?

Your FireAngel smoke alarm isdesigned to alert you by soundinganalarmwhenitsensessmoke,i.e.itcanonlysensesmokeandalertyouifsmokereachesit!Ifafiredevelopsinanarearemotefromthelocationofthesmokealarm,suchasanotherroom or another level, smokemay not reach the smoke alarm insufficient time or quantity to senseandalertyoutothedanger.For comprehensive coverage a

smokealarmshouldalsobefittedineveryroom.

This smoke alarm cannot be usedto provide primary fire detectionin common areas usedby differentresidentssuchasblocksofflatsandhotels. The FireAngel smoke alarmmay not alarm before a fire causesdamage, injury or death, as thesmoke may not reach the smokealarm in time. Examples includesmoking in bed and violent gasexplosions. This smoke alarm maynotrespondinareasonabletimeifit

isnotinstalledinthebestposition,oriffurnitureorotherobstaclesarelocated between the smoke alarmandthefire.

WARNING: Your smokealarmwill not operate without a

battery installed. Only batterieslisted on page 20 should beused and should be changedimmediatelywhen the lowbatterysignal isgivenor theunitmay fail.Testmonthly, and read and followall instructionsortheunitmaynotoperateproperly.

Your FireAngel smoke alarmwill advise you of a low batterycondition by emitting an audible‘chirp’ every 48 seconds. Whenthis occurs you must change thebatteryintheunitwithin30daystomaintaincorrectoperation.

IMPORTANT:Smokealarmsaredesigned to alert youwith an

audiblealarmatalevelspecifiedbythe European Standard EN 14604:2005.Closeddoors,wallsandhighambientnoiselevelswillreducethis

level. Temporary or permanentlyimpairedhearingmayresult in thealarm not being heard. Stereos,trafficandother loud sourcesmayalsopreventthealarmbeingheard.Heavysleepersandresidentsunderthe influence of alcohol or drugsmayalsonothearorrespondtothealarm.Testandcheckthatyoucanhearthealarminallcircumstances.If indoubt installadditionalsmokealarmsasrequired.

WARNING:TheSmokealarmisnotsuitableforalertinghearing

impairedresidents.Werecommendthat specially designed warningsystems be installed that will alerthearingimpairedresidents.

WARNING: The smoke alarmaccompanying this manual

is independently tested as beingcompliant with all the relevantEuropean Standards. However, aswithanyelectronicproduct itmayfail andmaynot senseall typesof

fire within sufficient time to alertyou of the danger and provideadequate time for your escape.In order to maximise your levelof safety always test your smokealarm frequently to ensure it is infull working order. Your FireAngelsmokealarmisonlysuitableforuseindomestic/residentialapplicationsascovered in thismanual. It isnotsuitableforcommercialorindustrialapplications.Itisdesignedtosensesmoke and alert you. It will notsense carbon monoxide, flames,

heat or gas. It will not prevent orextinguishfires.

This FireAngel smoke alarm has alimited life of 10 years and shouldnot be considered as a substitutefor life or property insurance. Likeall electronic equipment, it canwearoutorfail.Itshouldbetestedmonthlyandreplacedimmediatelyintheeventoffailure,andreplacedafter10yearsregardless.

HOW TO INSTALL YOUR SMOKE ALARM

IMPORTANT: Make sure youhave read and understood

this manual before installing yoursmokealarm.

1 Preparation

Attach the mounting ring to the ceiling as follows:

Use the two fixing slots on themounting ring as a guide when

marking the position of the drillholes. With an appropriately sizeddrill, drill the holes and insert theplastic fixing anchors supplied (ifneeded).Seediagramoverleaf.

IMPORTANT: Activate thebattery before installing your

smoke alarm by removing theclear plastic battery spacer fromunderneath the battery, ensuringthebatteryremainsinplace.

Position the smokealarmover themounting ring and turn clockwise.Youshouldfeelthealarmclickintoplace.Thealarmwillonlyattachtothemountingringwiththebatteryinplace.

OPERATIONNormal ConditionThe combined red LED and testbutton on the side of the alarmshouldflashonceevery48secondstoshowthealarmisactive.

Low Battery Condition

IMPORTANT: Your smokealarm requires a battery with

a sufficient capacity of power tooperatecorrectly.Thismustalsobecorrectlyinstalled.

ShouldyourFireAngelsmokealarmenter a low battery condition, theunitwillemitanaudible‘chirp’onceevery48seconds.Whenthisoccursyou should replace the batteryimmediately.YourFireAngelsmokealarmwill continue towarnof thislowbatteryconditionforatleast30days,however,failuretochangethebatteryafterthistimewouldmeanyour smoke alarm has insufficientpower to alert you in a real firesituation.

BATTERY REPLACEMENTIMPORTANT: Only use CR2size 3V Lithium batteries for

replacement. Use of a batteryother than that recommendedmay have a detrimental effect onthe detector’s operation. Use ofthe recommended battery shouldprovide power for 5 years undernormal operating conditions,meaning there is no need for anannualbatterychange.

Replacing the batteryThe battery is designed to last forat least5 years. When thebatterynearstheendof its life, thesmokealarm emits a low battery chirpevery 48 seconds to warn you toreplacethebattery.

emergency.Avoidplacingyourear

the battery label is folded andkept outside of the batteryaperture.TheredLEDonthetestbutton should now flash every48secondstoshowthealarmisactive.

c Replace the alarm on itsmounting ring. Position thesmokealarmoverthemountingring and turn clockwise youshould feel the alarm click intoplace.

WARNING: Test your smokealarmatleastoncepermonth.

ALARM SILENCEYour smoke alarm has a temporary silence feature. Smoke alarms can sometimes react to cooking fumes or other non emergency situations. Should your alarm sound, the test button on the side of the alarm can be pressed to temporarily silence the alarm. Your alarm will automatically switch itself back on within 10 minutes.

DANGER: If your FireAngelsmoke alarm emits the full

alarm signal and you are nottesting the unit, the smoke alarmis warning you of a potentiallydangerous situation that requiresyour immediate attention. Onlyuse the alarm silence functionafter making sure that there is noongoing fire emergency situation.Do not block the vents on thealarm or disable the smoke alarminanyway,asthiswillremoveyourprotection.Intheeventofaknownfalse alarm such as cooking fumesyour smoke alarm can be silencedinthefollowingway.

a Press and release the testbutton. The alarm sound willimmediatelystop.

b Your alarm will silence andswitch off for approximately 10minutesand thenautomaticallyswitchitselfbackon.

c If youwish to switch the alarmback on before the 10minuteshas passed, simply push thetest button again. The alarmwill sound and the red LEDwillrevert toflashingonceevery48seconds.

DANGER: Never ignore anyalarm. Ignoring the alarm

may result in injury or death. Ifyour smoke alarm activates andalarms and you are not absolutelycertainofthesourceofthesmoke,get everyone out of the houseimmediately.

ROUTINE MAINTENANCEYour FireAngel smoke alarmhas been designed to be asmaintenance-free as possible andalthough the unit requires onlybattery maintenance for its entirelife, there are several things youmustdotokeepitworkingproperly.

CAUTION: Your FireAngelsmoke alarm is a sealed

electrical device and no attemptshouldbemade toopen thecase.

Attempting to open the case willinvalidateyourWarranty.

TestingTest your smoke alarmonce everymonth see section ‘Alarm Test’ onpage22.AnytestfailuresshouldbereportedtotheFireAngelTechnicalSupportTeamseepage25.

CleaningAs a minimum your smoke alarmshould be cleaned once everymonthusingyour vacuumcleanerfittedwithasoftbrushattachment.

WARNING: Your FireAngelsmoke alarm may false alarm

when it is being cleaned using avacuumcleaner.

IMPORTANT: Do not usesolvents or cleaners on your

FireAngel smoke alarm, as theymay cause damage to the sensoror circuitry. Theunit canbewipedwithaslightlydampcloth.

CAUTION: Do not paint thesmokealarmasthismayblock

the openings and prevent smokefromenteringthesensor.

WHAT TO DO IN CASE OFA FIRE IN YOUR HOME

• Ifyouhavemadeafamilyescapeplanandpracticeditwithyourfamily,youhaveincreasedtheirchancesofescapingsafely.Gooverthefollowingruleswithyourchildreneachtimeyouhavefiredrills.Thiswillhelpeveryonerememberthemincaseofarealemergency.

• Don’tpanic,staycalm.Yoursafeescapemaydependonthinkingclearlyandrememberingwhatyouhavepracticed.

• Notifyeverymemberintheresidenceofthefire.

• Getoutofthehouseasquicklyaspossible.Followaplannedescaperoute.Donotstoptocollectanythingortogetdressed.

• Feelthedoorstoseeiftheyarehot.Iftheyarehot,donotopenthem–useanalternativeescaperoute.

• Stayclosetothefloor.Smokeandhotgasesrise.

• Coveryournoseandmouthwithacloth(wetifpossible).Takeshort,shallowbreaths.

• Keepdoorsandwindowsclosed.Openthemonlyifyouhavetoinordertoescape.

• Meetatyourplannedmeetingplaceafterleavingthehouse.Carryoutaheadcount.

• CalltheFirebrigadeon999assoonaspossiblefromoutsideyourhouse.Ifpossibleuseaneighboursphoneorphoneboxratherthanamobilephone(asthelocationcanbetracedfromthenumberifthelineislost,orthebatteryrunsoutforexample).

• Givetheaddressandyourname.

• Nevergobackinsidethebuildinguntilamemberofthefireservicehastoldyouitissafetodoso.

Contact your local Fire Brigade.Theywillgiveyoumoreideasabouthowtomakeyourhomesaferfromfiresandhowtoplanyour family’sescape.

REPAIRDO NOT attempt to repair yourFireAngel smoke alarm doing sowill invalidate your warranty. Ifyour smokealarm isnotoperatingproperly, see the next section‘Troubleshooting’. If you cannotsolve the problem, please call theTechnicalSupportLine,seepage37

DISPOSALWaste electricalproducts should notbe disposed of withregular householdwaste. Please recycle

where facilities exist. Check withyour local authority, retailer or theFireAngel Technical Support Line(see page 37 for contact details)for recycling/disposal advice asregionalvariationsapply.

The battery should be removedbeforedisposalofthesmokealarm.Both the battery and the smokealarmshouldbedisposedofinlinewithcurrentregulations.

You can also return your smokealarmtous fordisposal. For returnaddressseethesectiononReturns,seepage46.Please includeanoteconfirming the product is beingreturnedfordisposal.

HOW TO MAKE YOURHOME SAFER

Installingsmokealarmsisonlyonestepinprotectingyourfamilyfromfires. You must also take steps toreducethechancesoffiresstartingin your home. If a fire does start,youmust increaseyourchancesofescaping.

To have a good fire safety program you must:

1 Installsmokealarmsproperly.

CarefullyfollowALLtheinstructionsinthismanual.Keepyoursmokealarmsclean,andtestthemeveryweek.

SMOKE ALARMS THAT DO NOT WORK WILL NOT ALERT YOU.

2 Replaceyoursmokealarmsimmediatelyiftheyarenotworkingproperly.

3 Follow fire safety rules, and prevent hazardous situations:

• Usesmokingmaterialsproperly.

Neversmokeinbed.• Keepmatchesandcigarettelightersawayfromchildren.

• Storeflammablematerialsinpropercontainers.Neverusethemnearanopenflameorsparks.

• Keepelectricalappliancesandwiringingoodcondition.Donotoverloadelectricalcircuits.

• Keepcookers,fireplaces,chimneys,andbarbecuegrillsgreasefree.Makesuretheyare

properlyinstalled,awayfromanycombustiblematerials.

• Keepportableheatersandopenflamessuchascandlesawayfromcombustiblematerials.

• Donotallowrubbishtoaccumulateinsideyourhomeasthisprovidessourcesforcombustion.

• KeepasupplyofextrabatteriesonhandforyourbatterypoweredSmokeAlarms.

4 Developafamilyescapeplanandpracticeitwitheveryoneinthehousehold,includingsmallchildrenifyouhavethem.

• Drawafloorplanofyourhome,andfindtwowaystoexitfromeachroom.Thereshouldbeonewaytogetoutofeachbedroomwithoutopeningthedoor,andalternatemeansofescapefromanupperfloorintheeventofthestairsbeingblocked(suchasafireescape).

• Makesureeveryonerecognisesthesmokealarmsignalandknowshowtoreacttoit.

• Iftherearesmallchildrentoconsideritisimportanttoexplaintothemwhatthesmokealarmsignalmeans.Teachthemthattheymustbepreparedtoleavethehomebythemselvesifnecessary.Showthemhowtochecktoseeifdoorsarehotbeforeopeningthem.Showthemhowtostayclosetothefloorandcrawlif

necessary.Showthemhowtouseanalternativeexitifthedoorishotandshouldnotbeopened.

• Decideonameetingplaceasafedistancefromyourhouse.Again,ifyouhavethem,makesurethatallyourchildrenunderstandthattheyshouldgoandwaitforyouthereifthereisafire.

• Holdfiredrillsatleastevery6monthstomakesurethat

everyone,includingsmallchildren,knowwhattodotoescapesafely.

• KnowwheretogotocalltheFireBrigadefromoutsideyourhome.ContactyourlocalFireBrigade.Theywillgiveyoumoreideasabouthowtomakeyourhomesaferfromfiresandhowtoplanyourfamily’sescape.

WARRANTYSprueSafetyProductsLtdwarrantsto the original purchaser that itsenclosed smoke alarm be freefrom defects in materials andworkmanship under normalresidential use and service for aperiod of 2 (two) years from thedate of purchase. Provided it isreturned with postage prepaidandproof of purchasedate, SprueSafetyProductsLtdherebywarrantsthatduringthe2(two)yearperiod

commencing from the date ofpurchaseSprueSafetyProductsLtd,at its discretion, agrees to replacetheunitfreeofcharge.Thewarrantyon any replacement SL-602 alarm,will last for the remainder of theperiod of the original warrantyin respect of the alarm originallypurchased–thatisfromthedateoforiginalpurchaseandnotfromthedateof receiptof the replacementproduct. Sprue Safety ProductsLtd reserves the right to offer analternative product similar to that

beingreplacediftheoriginalmodelis no longer available or in stock.Thiswarrantyappliestotheoriginalretail purchaser from the date oforiginal retail purchase and is nottransferable. Proof of purchase isrequired.

This warranty does not coverdamage resulting from accident,misuse, disassembly, abuse or lackofreasonablecareoftheproduct,orapplicationsnotinaccordancewiththeusermanual. Itdoesnotcover
