  • Different Departments at the Smithsonian Anthropology is the study of past and present peoples lives and culture. Anthropology Botany is the study of plants. The Smithsonian has a complex greenhouse facility. Botany Entomology is the study of insects. There are 35 million specimens at the museum. Entomology Invertebrate Zoology is one of the older departments in the museum. Invertebrate Zoology Mineral Sciences is the effects of the geologic phenomena of the earths atmosphere. Mineral Sciences Paleobiology is the study of fossils and their effect on the earth. Paleobiology Vertebrate Zoology is the study of animals with backbones.
