Principal’s Message— Mr. B. White
N ovember was a time to remember those who have gone be-
fore us, the communion of saints, loved ones and those who
served to protect us. Once again, we are very proud of the way
our senior students continued the tradition of leading the Remem-
brance Day ceremony in the Cathedral, this year on two occa-
sions. Student leadership was evident as the boys were involved
with composing, conducting, singing and performing music and
prayer that helped us all solemnly honour those who sacrificed their lives so that
we might enjoy peace.
Our Senior High School Volleyball team travelled to North Bay to compete at the
provincial level for the third year in a row, unprecedented in our school’s history.
Meanwhile, our Elementary Intermediate Volleyball team won their Division and
advanced to the Regional playoffs. The support of the school community for the
entire program has been greatly appreciated.
We ended the month with a tour to Lindsay for a sold-out concert. In contrast to
the premature commercial celebration of Christmas, the season of Advent is, for
us, a time of anticipation and preparation. Our choristers and conductors have been
working hard to prepare for the various services that now lie ahead. We look for-
ward to seeing you, your family and friends at our Massey Hall concerts and at the
up-coming celebrations in the Cathedral.
For a wonderful record of our trip to Italy, be sure to order your copy of the newly
released Salt and Light documentary ―Into the Mystery.‖ On behalf of the staff
here at St Michael’s Choir School, I wish all of you blessings during the Christmas
season, the peace of Christ, the company of loved ones, rest and renewal as we
head into 2014!

CHOIR SCHOOL NEWS December, 2013
Director’s Message—Mr. S. Handrigan
What a busy month it has been!
All of the choirs and their conductors have worked extremely hard this past month preparing for
our Run-Out and Massey Hall concerts. Our concerts in Lindsay and Brooklin were tremen-
dously successful. Our capacity audiences were treated to an early Christmas present in the form
of beautiful music for the season. The boys were very well prepared and the standing ovations
we received at both St. Mary’s and St. Leo the Great boosted everyone’s confidence. I know our
upcoming Massey Hall concerts will be outstanding! Tickets for our Massey Hall concerts are
disappearing very quickly. The positive media frenzy over the past two weeks has really boosted
our ticket sales. If you still require tickets, please visit www.christmasconcert.ca for details.
Don’t hesitate – I anticipate sold out audiences!
I would like to thank our Benefit Choir for all of their work this past term reaching out to various charities to spread
their gift of song. Their service to others is a testament to their character and willingness to give freely of their time and
talent. I am very proud of their efforts!
As we head into the Massey Hall weekend, I would like to acknowledge the work of all of the volunteers that work
―behind the scenes‖ to ensure that everything runs smoothly. Our faculty give so generously of their time lining up and
supervising choirs. I really appreciate all that they do. The Massey Hall Committee has also been working tirelessly
since the day after last year’s concert to ensure a very high standard of professionalism. Congratulations! I would also
like to thank the office staff who look after all of the fine details. They regularly go beyond the call of duty – often
working well past ―closing time‖. Thank you for your dedication and team work.
I am very excited to share some good news with you. Our 7th Anniversary book ―75 Years of Service and Song‖ and our
DVD that chronicles our Italy tour, produced by Salt and Light television, will be available for sale at our Massey Hall
concerts. You can also pre-order both the book and DVD on our website www.smcs.on.ca
Thank you all for your continued support of all that we do here at SMCS.
I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous 2014.
Sincerely,

CHOIR SCHOOL NEWS December, 2013
A s one liturgical year ends and the onset of another is upon us, this time of the year invites Catholics to re-
flect on several dimensions of the faith. Last weekend we celebrated the Feast of Christ the King, on which
we look forward to the future when Christ will return and exercise full dominion over all of creation. In the
Book of Revelations, a vision of this future reality is offered when it states:
―See, the home of God is among mortals.
He will dwell with them;
they will be his peoples,
and God himself will be with them;
he will wipe every tear from their eyes.
Death will be no more;
mourning and crying and pain will be no more,
for the first things have passed away.‖
This vision, of all tears, pain, mourning, and crying passing away is something that no living person has yet experi-
enced. Although life in this world has many good and bad moments, life is never the complete absence of sadness
or doubt. The future vision then is something better and incomparable to this worldly existence.
As we move into December, we refocus from the future to the past. We focus from Christ's second coming to
his first coming 2000 years ago as we celebrate the season of advent and Christmas. Advent and Christmas will
mean lots of busyness at the Choir school as additional performances, rehearsals, and Massey Hall all stack up.
As always, the music provided by the boys enriches so many peoples' experience of the season. The boys at this
school are truly deserving of praise for the time, dedication, and talent that they share with others.
God Bless,
Mr. Hume

F or the third consecutive year the Senior Boys Vol-

OFSAA tournament took place in North Bay from No-
vember 21st to 23rd. We are all very proud of the commit-
ment, team spirit and sportsmanship that the boys demon-
strated throughout the tournament. Qualifying for a pro-
vincial tournament and representing not only our school
but our board among twenty other teams in the single A
division is a true feat in itself.
The team played with confidence and perseverance
throughout the tournament. Their composure was stellar
and albeit the level of athleticism they faced was difficult
they battled through every point. The teams that our

President
O ur annual Massey Hall concert is upon us! Christmas is always a
busy time at the Choir School. Take the after school rehearsals
and extra choral duties and pile them onto the academic requirements and it gets pretty
crazy, but there is always time for a little fun!
This month we ran our November House Event. House members were given the chance
to play either basketball, table tennis, W5H or chess. Teams were ranked first-fourth for
each individual event and each place was given a set amount of points. The points were
then totalled to see who emerged victorious! Each house was well represented in each activity and by a
mere 2 points, Hopperton House came out as number one! All the boys had fun participating and it was
amazing seeing everyone just let loose and get a break from their busy schedule!
Our next event will be later in December and it will of course be our Christmas House Event. Not only
will we be looking to put on something that is fun and exciting but also further the community of the stu-
dents, provide meaningful leadership opportunities and enhance student life. We will also be launching our
Student Survey this month. The Student Survey is a chance for the students, both elementary and secon-
dary, to provide feedback to the Student Council on how we are doing and what they would like to see
happen in the future. It is very important as the results from the survey are analyzed and will influence deci-
sions that are made by the Student Council in the future.
Finally, we have launched our annual Christmas Toy Drive. Christmas is a time to be with friends and family
and everyone deserves to have gifts to open on Christmas Day. To that end, all proceeds from the Toy
Drive will be donated to St. Vincent de Paul for their annual Christmas Outreach weekend. The Toy Drive
will run from December 2nd, 2013 through till December 13th, 2013. Along with being able to help the less fortunate in our community, students in the Upper and Lower House System will be able to win House
points and the winning Upper and Lower House will win a lunch, courtesy of your 2013-2014 Student
Council!
We hope to see you all at Massey Hall!

E very year in late No-
vember, high school
students from around the
school board have an op-portunity to participate in
the Catholic Schools United
Nations Assembly, better
known as CSUNA. Students
get to take on the role of
delegates, representing dif-
ferent countries from
around the world as they
are launched into three
days of intense debate on
some of the most pressing issues in our world. CSUNA is an amazing experience that offers students an
opportunity to inform themselves on world politics and issues that we, citizens living in the 21st century,
need to face. These topics range from third-world debt to military conflicts.
This year, we had a great turnout from our school. Participating as delegates were Jacob Brozyna, James
Bui, Ian Cheong, Jonathan Chow, Andrew Clifford, William Gatchalian, Adam Gauran, Erik Gillis, Gerard
Mannella, Paul Picotte, Joshua Pinto, Joshua Rossetti, James Profiti and Aloysius Wong.
We were also extremely fortunate to have two students
from our school chairing on the CSUNA Secretariat, Dugald
Campbell and myself, Sebastien Duckett. As chair members,
we helped facilitate and organize the three days of debate to
ensure a smooth and entertaining conference.
We also had Brian Cheong, Christoph Chung, Joseph
Nguyen, Joshua Dandal, Joshua Huerto, Thomas Clifford and
Timo Lahteenmaa-Swerdlyk represent our school as pages,
helping delegates communicate with each other throughout
the CSUNA conference.
Our school is very fortunate to have students who are so
focused on the problems that face our world. I’m already counting down the days until CSUNA’s twentieth
anniversary next year! I would like to thank everyone who participated in CSUNA this year and I hope to
see you all and more next year.

MULTICULTURAL NIGHT – NOVEMBER 8, 2013
Hosted by: CSAC
ORANGIZED BY MRS. A. DI SANTO
I t’s wonderful that the school hosts an event in a leisurely atmosphere
at no cost to parents that includes the entire school community. It is
the one event at the Choir School which allows us to witness the joy,
laughter, giggles and happiness that our sons share with their classmates.
We enjoyed watching them interacting on a social level with their peers
and it was touching to see how they truly look after each other…one got
drinks, the other cutlery and they conducted their own culinary review of
the items they had chosen. It was beautiful and heart-warming! My hus-
band and I also had a wonderful evening. We filled our plates, and walked around chatting with other parents, grand-
parents, staff and children. It was fantastic to see the younger boys thrilled and excited to hear the older students in the
band. They stood at the front with jaws wide open cheering them on! A few feet away
two younger boys sold raffle tickets with an older
boy. Camaraderie was everywhere and laughter was
in abundance. At the end of the evening my husband
went to get our car, while we stayed in the gym.
While he was gone parents were clearing tables, tak-
ing out garbage, folding down tables and stacking
chairs. By the time he returned, the gym was trans-
formed. Even the caretaker couldn’t believe his eyes!
We look forward to next year’s potluck!

STREET PATROL—GRADE 11 STUDENTS
M r. Peacock’s Grade 11 students organized a Street Patrol.
The boys made sandwiches and served hot coffee. Also fruit

It was a great success and the boys felt very rewarded in giving
of their time to the less fortunate.
O ur prayers go out to those who have died and those who have been dev-
astated by the loss of loved ones in the Philippines due to Typhoon Hai-

six metres and winds were recorded at 275km/h. Buildings were destroyed,
crops vanished and infrastructures have been damaged. More than 600,000
people have been displaced. The Archdiocese of Toronto is asking for our
support for fundraising efforts to provide emergency assistance to the affected
areas and humanitarian relief as the death toll rises. Our school has reached
out to our brothers and sisters in the Philippines. We have raised $780.
