Matt 28 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them

in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.

And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

The Mission of the “Church” is to go and make disciples and to observe all the Jesus commanded us. Seems simple enough………

…………….But if we (The Church overall) are very honest with ourselves we are limping along with some

intermittent successes along the way in spite of the fact that Disciple making is not really at the

core of what we do, at least not overtly at the core. Most churches Discipleship strategy is that

we expect people to show up on Sunday and to hang out together and if you can do this for long

enough you will become like us. Osmosis. This can work for a certain number of people. But not

everyone will be able to get this done. And actually, I feel, the majority will not be able to do this

to the point that they themselves are able to go out and make disciples of Jesus Christ. Before we

beat ourselves up too bad let’s remember that culture is changing and each new generation has its

own challenges and issues so what worked 20 years ago may need to be adjusted to work for today.

It’s just how it is…………..things change. What is God calling us to do at SMC that is unique for this

period in time in order to “Go and Make Disciples”?

What do we do? I am not completely sure at this point, but here are some things I do know.

Disciples are made one at a time. In smaller groups. Very personalized.

Disciples become like their teacher……….this can be equally affirming and threatening.

Discipleship is a process that takes time and has a strategy to it.

Without a good disciple making plan the church will weaken and disappear. Its ability to grow

will be limited to attracting other Christians from other churches.

We all are called to this lifestyle……….not just church leaders.

Discipleship can be done around hobbies, coffee, books, outside, inside……..anywhere and around

almost any common interest you have with others.

Prayer covers and provides direction for our discipleship strategies. We depend on God to

direct our steps.

Thank you, Stumptown Mennonite Church,

for participating in Baby Bottle Boomerang &

for filling 26 bottles (totaling $700.27).

We look forward to BBB’ing with you again next year!

“Show me your ways, O Lord, teach me your paths;

guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior,

and my hope is in you all day long.” (Psalm 25:4-5)

May this be the prayer of each of us as we follow our Savior. No matter how long we have walked with the Lord, we still have much to learn and need his guidance. Whatever we face in the days ahead, let’s remember that our hope is in Him!
