Preface Dear Students, The following 3 month and 6 month study plans are intended to assist you on your journey to achieving a great score on your USMLE Step 1 exam, which is critical in attaining a residency position thereafter. Contrary to popular belief, there is no mystery to doing well on the USMLE. Doing well on the USMLE exams requires a comprehensive understanding of the material and the ability to apply learned knowledge in a timed setting.

How to use this study guide Practice questions According to these study plans, it is in your best interest to do at least 30 SMASH questions and 25 Uworld questions per day, to remain at a good pace whilst learning and retaining information necessary for test day. Towards the end of the second month of your preparation, you may increase the number of questions you do per day, if you are able to retain information from past questions. If not, it is suggested that you continue to review questions that you have done in the past, to make sure that you understand the content. Doing so will make you more proficient and more able to answer the question in any way it may be presented. Right way to do questions When doing questions, it is important to read the vignette very carefully, especially the last line, which usually includes the question, which is being asked. As you approach a new testing item, it is advised that you glance over the last line, or question being asked, before you read the entire vignette. This will guide your thinking to best be able to answer the question correctly. After reading the vignette, and question asked of you, begin to interpret each of the answer choices, and determine what each of them could be referring to. Then, eliminate answer choices, one by one, that are most likely incorrect. This happens to be the best method to approaching USMLE questions. Maximize your learning It is most likely that you will complete all questions in both question bank’s much before test day. Take advantage of the time you have left to redo the questions in both qbanks. Redo them in a timed and test mode, and increase the number of questions you do per day, since you’ve already done them before. This time around, it is important to know the concept, and why the answer choices are right or wrong. Although not included in the study plans, the SMASH videos are a great resource for reviewing topics that may be unclear to your or may need further clarification. If you feel that you need more review on any topic of subject, make time to watch the relevant videos and take notes or draw if necessary. NBME practice test Taking NBME exams is a great way to gauge your performance, as they are the closest estimation to the quality and content of questions that you will see on test day. It’s called an assessment test for a reason! NBME question accurately assess your knowledge base level and your estimated score on the actual test. Take this very seriously! Therefore there are many NBME exams embedded into these study plans. FIRST AID for USMLE Step 1 Throughout your Step 1 Journey, “First Aid” (FA) will be your bible. You WILL eventually learn and apply all of the information in the book, as well as remember page numbers where specific information is located. Therefore it is important to learn FA by heart. During the course of these study plans, it is encouraged that you read parts of FA on a daily basis. This will help to solidify information and concepts.

3 Keys to success on the USMLE

1. Master the material – The vast amount of information on the USMLE covers the high yield and relevant clinical content in first 2 years of medical school. Learn to understand the mechanisms of disease processes, pathways, and associations often tested on the exam. Use rapid review videos from SmashUSMLE TM to brush up on topics you have forgotten or unable to understand to clarify and solidify the content for you.

2. Review, Review, Review- The exam is integrated and requires multifacet approach. Practice thousands of questions! Read the right and wrong answers to each question, go into FIRSTAID and find where the question was derived from and write summary notes on extra pages in the book. It takes no less than 5 hours to complete a 46 questions block. Anything less, you are wasting your time. Be patient, the second attempt will be less painful.

3. Recall – Re-read FIRSTAID, check your weakest areas and work diligently

to improve your knowledge to maximize your score.

Keys to success before the test Throughout this study process, don’t forget to take care of yourself.

1. Limit social interaction and fun time, as it is in your best interest to focus at this critical time.

2. Limit your caffeine intake and make sure to get enough sleep each night. Develop a strict daily routine for yourself, so that you can make the most progress out of each day.

3. Lastly, on the day before test day, DO NOTHING. Give your brain and body a day of rest, as you will need both to be fully functional the next day. You may do questions if you must, but do not open a book. By now, you’ve worked hard and it’s time to show it. Be confident in yourself and your answer choices.
